About the Author Marvin Heiferman is an author and exhibition curator who is currently providing creative consultation to the Smithsonian Institution's Photographic Initiative. He is the author of numerous books including John Watersa (TM) Change of Life, Paradise Now: Picturing the Genetic Revolution, and Talking Pictures: People Speak About the Photographs that Speak to Them. Heiferman is an adjunct professor at the School of Visual Arts, New York.Mellins is an architectural historian and critic.Christopher Webber is an English actor, writer, and stage director. An enthusiastic champion for zarzuela, he translated, performed and directed classic works in the United Kingdom and the United States, as well as edited the award-winning Zarzuela! Web site. His publications include four collections of zarzuela romanzas; plays including Dr. Sullivan and Mr. Gibert and Green Tea; the best-selling Bluff Your Way at the Races and Bluff Your Way in Opera (with Peter Gammond). Rare Photo's Of Obscure Opera Houses By Britt Le Bonzo This book is beautifully bound and executed, but some of the color saturation looks weak and some of the red shades are off. I'm wondering if it's due to digital photography? They spared no expense - the book was printed in Italy - but it's not the best photography I've seen. Some of the photo's are excellent - the quality of the photograhs is highly inconsistent.
3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Superb, and not just for opera lovers By David H. (Austin) When I received this book as a gift, I didn't know what to expect. ANOTHER coffee table book? Again? My qualms were completely forgotten as soon as I opened the book -- 42 glorious photographs of the interiors of opera houses all around the world. David Leventi is the photographer and his aim is to depict the interiors mostly from center stage looking out to the seating areas. No people in sight. The opera houses depicted range from the world renown to the less famous (some of the more delightful, by the way).As an architecture aficionado, I was happy to see the inside of such houses as the Palais Garnier in Paris, the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, and La Fenice in Venice which was destroyed by arson in 1996 and reputedly restored from stills from Luchino Visconti's SENSO (1954). Opera houses of cities of the Western world are well represented and include architectural confections in Prague, Bucharest, Budapest, Stockholm, and Brussels. Some of the houses were reconstructed from those destroyed by fire and war (Dresden), and those that were modernized (the grim Opéra Nouvel in Lyons)Newer opera houses are included such as the Guangzhou (Canton) Opera House, the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia in Valencia and designed by Santiago Calatrava, Den Norske Opera og Ballett in Oslo (see if that one doesn't remind you of Henri Rousseau's 'The Sleeping Gypsy'!), and the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto.Some of the most interesting houses are small: the Teatro di Villa Aldrovandi Mazzacorati in Bologna (80 seats) -- and then compare it to the Teatro Comunale di Bologna (1034 seats). The latter is beautiful but it can't compare to the over the top ornamentation of the former which is utterly delightful. Then there is the Amargosa Opera House (105 seats) in, of all places, Death Valley Junction (USA).There are some curious omissions: the Sydney Opera House which is as spectacular inside as it is on the outside; and, depending on your viewpoint, the Santa Fe Opera venue. At least, however, the book's final photograph is that of the legendary Teatro Amazonas in Manaus, Brazil.Each opera house has a small commentary at the end of the book written by historian, curator, and writer Thomas Mellins. These commentaries are apposite and full of interesting details. Forward by Placido Domingo, and Introduction by curator and writer Marvin Heiferman.While I found the comments by reviewer Britt Le Bonzo to be helpful as to the quality of the photography, other readers should give this book a close look and just enjoy the beauty of the wonderful venues included in this book. It's all a matter of taste, but everyone who buys this book will have their own favorites. This is one coffee table book that I will be looking at a lot -- I hope you will too. Enthusiastically recommended. Oh, and this book will appeal to architects, interior designers, and historians -- not just opera lovers.

The opera houses pictured are interesting and eclectic -- modern as well as the ornate wedding cake traditional tiered houses. Highly recommend this book!
