Ebook PDF Clash of Crowns: William the Conqueror, Richard Lionheart, and Eleanor of AquitaineA Story of Bloodshed, Betrayal, and Revenge, by Mary McAuliffe

Conflict between England and France was a fact of life for centuries, but few realize that its origins date from the time of the Vikings, when a Norse chieftain named Rollo established himself and his progeny in Normandy. In this compelling and entertaining history, Mary McAuliffe takes the reader back to those dark and turbulent times when Rollo’s descendants, the dukes of Normandy, asserted their dominance over the weak French monarchy—a dominance that became especially threatening after Duke William conquered England in 1066, giving him a royal crown.Despite this crown, William the Conqueror and his royal successors remained dukes of Normandy, with feudal obligations to their overlord, the king of France. This naturally fostered an ongoing hostility between the French and English crowns that, as McAuliffe convincingly shows, became ever more explosive as the strength and territorial holdings of the English monarchs grew. Conflict erupted regularly over the years, and Eleanor of Aquitaine’s desertion of one camp for the other only added fuel to the long-simmering feud. McAuliffe takes the reader back to this dramatic era, providing the fascinating background and context for this “clash of crowns.” She offers colorful insights into Richard Lionheart and Eleanor of Aquitaine as well as lesser-known French and English monarchs, especially Philip II of France. Philip proved a determined opponent of Richard Lionheart, and their cutthroat rivalry not only created fatal divisions within the Third Crusade but also culminated in an incendiary faceoff at Richard’s newly built Château-Gaillard, the seemingly impregnable gateway to empire. The outcome would shape the course of English and French history throughout the centuries that followed.

Clash of Crowns: William the Conqueror, Richard Lionheart, and Eleanor of AquitaineA Story of Bloodshed, Betrayal, and Revenge, by Mary McAuliffe

Review McAuliffe's well-researched and detailed newest . . . recounts the familial and political tensions between England and France, which the author traces to Duke William of Normandy's conquering of the former in 1066. He and his descendants remained active in the Norman duchy, leading to conflicted loyalties, and attendant betrayals and battles. This interesting narrative focuses primarily on Richard Lionheart (son of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine, and great-great grandson of William the Conqueror) and his rivalry with King Philip II of France, who resolved to change the notion that his country's kings were 'pitifully weak.' Their enmity manifested itself in Richard brashly constructing the mighty fortress Château-Gaillard on the border of French and English holdings, and Philip declaring his intentions to seize it, 'were its walls of iron.' . . . Richard Lionheart's life is thoroughly told—from his imprisonment by Duke Leopold of Austria (during which Richard continued to strategize), his failed betrothal to Philip II's youngest sister, and to his unexpected death by one of his own armory's arrows, repurposed and let fly by an enemy to whom Richard, on his deathbed, gave 100 shillings. Supplemented with a timeline, a dramatis personae, and extensive notes, fans of medieval European history will delight in McAuliffe's rich tale. (Publishers Weekly)Among the many notables, McAuliffe (Dawn of the Belle Epoque: The Paris of Monet, Zola, Bernhardt, Eiffel, Debussy, Clemenceau, and Their Friends, 2011, etc.) reintroduces us to the likes of William the Conqueror, Barbarossa, Rollo the Viking, Robert Curthose of Normandy, Louis the Fat and a cadre of Henrys. (Readers will have no problem keeping them straight—the author appends a table of key people and a helpful chronology). After assessing the famously dysfunctional English household of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine, McAuliffe focuses on the truly excellent adventures of their son, Richard Lionheart. In clear prose, the author examines Richard’s internecine struggles, usually with his brother, his feckless Third Crusade fighting Saladin and his many clashes with archenemy Philip of France. In these eclectic pages, we learn of 12th-century statecraft, the design of fortress castles and how to lay siege to them, the wages of mounted knights and foot soldiers, the rise of the notion of romance and the wonderful victuals consumed at great state dinners. The author weaves a selective tapestry that does not scant personal qualities of her featured players. She reveals the Conqueror’s baldness and staunch Eleanor’s attractions. Also, it appears that Lionheart may have been gay, according to the author’s research. With measured verve, McAuliffe presents an accessible text. (Kirkus Reviews)A lively and affectionate account of a grand scenario in medieval history. (Thomas N. Bisson, Harvard University)A rattling good read that captures the mood of the age. (John France, Swansea University)[McAuliffe’s] subject is the conflict between England’s flamboyant warrior king Richard I and the more pragmatic Philip II of France and how their struggle shaped English-French relations over the following centuries. Being both a king and a duke put Richard in a peculiar situation, as he was simultaneously England’s absolute ruler and, as Duke of Normandy, vassal to another king. The author provides a thorough discussion of that topic and also covers medieval warfare, presenting evidence that wars were fought not as huge pitched battles but rather conducted unglamorously, through lengthy sieges. McAuliffe credibly describes the unromantic work of sappers—miners who tunneled under walls and castles to destroy them. It was often their work that turned the course of battles and, indeed, wars. VERDICT A valuable effort that examines a pivotal time in the relationship between England and France. Best for lay readers. (Library Journal)We're familiar with the names— William the Conqueror, Richard Lionheart, Eleanor of Aquitaine— but probably less so with the gripping stories of their never-ending confrontations with rivals at home and enemies abroad. It's this tangled history that Mary McAuliffe's aptly titled Clash of Crowns sets out to unravel. That she succeeds, splendidly, has to do with her uncanny ability to embed the myriad names and dates in a clearly developed narrative that features characters as fully fleshed out as those in any play. We care about most of the central figures who people the century and a half that McAuliffe describes, from William's Norman invasion of England in 1066 to the English loss of Normandy in 1204, because we understand their motives and psychology. Richard's untimely death, Eleanor's bad marriage, French King Philip's persistence, mean something to us and therefore we care about the battle that ends British control of Normandy, when Philip finally overruns Chateau-Gaillard, "the mightiest castle of its time." Along the way, McAuliffe, a Ph.D. historian, takes the time to fill us in on everything from castle engineering to the development of chess; from the role of women in the medieval era to the flowering of the troubadours and courtly love. She is especially good on Richard Lionheart, who in some ways is the book's central character. His slaughter of prisoners, his sheer physical courage, his acumen as strategist are all on ample display, especially in McAuliffe's analysis of the Third Crusade and the battles for Acre and Arsuf. This background helps make the mayhem of the foreground (the book's subtitle is A Story of Bloodshed, Betrayal, and Revenge) more understandable and three-dimensional. Then, too, McAuliffe's prose is a wonderful instrument, her tone of voice down-to-earth and commonsensical, all in all, a pleasure to read. (Providence Journal)

About the Author Mary McAuliffe received a Ph.D. in history from the University of Maryland and has taught at several universities and lectured at the Smithsonian Institution. For many years she was a regular contributor to Paris Notes. She has traveled extensively in France and recently published Dawn of theBelle Epoque: The Paris of Monet, Zola, Bernhardt, Eiffel, Debussy, Clemenceau, and Their Friends. She is also the author of Paris Discovered: Explorations in the City of Light. She lives in New York City with her husband.

Needs an Editor By Loves the View The title, "The Clash of Crowns" has the ring of the "Game of Thrones", "Storm of Swords" etc. The names in the subtitle conjure excitement, intrigue and sex, but there are no notable clashes between those named. Eleanor is shown (as usual) doting on her son Richard and William the Conqueror was deceased before Eleanor (and hence, Richard) were born. The clashing crowns are those of Richard I and Philip of France. Is Philip being underestimated (again, this time) by the book sellers?Similarly, the blurb promises "A story of bloodshed, betrayal and revenge". There is a lot of war/bloodshed and betrayal/revenge (especially in the dysfunctional Plantagenet Family) but if there is a defining theme in this "clash" it is the claim to Normandy.Overall, this is a biography of Richard the Lionhearted with an intro on his Norman heritage and an aftermath on how his brother lost Normandy. The book, for me, started in a muddle. In Chapter 1, Merlin's prophesy and its meaning for Eleanor wasn't at all clear. Then the part about finding King Arthur's bones (the mythical king?) threw me... and still does. The writing style makes for a choppy read. It is a mix of serious prose that breaks into informality, with phrases such as "...but there was more than one way to skin an empire" (p.118).Not familiar with the material, I found myself doubling back. One of the last examples in the book (fresh in my memory) is p.177 where the author refers to not "letting such a valuable hostage slip from their grasp." Presumably this hostage is Eleanor being held by the French. Reading back to see how I missed this, it says that she sought refuge in a place that was attacked and summoned help; with only this info, I accepted the fuzzy connection. On the next page, it says that Arthur is a hostage, a hostage of the English. There is a lot of this in the book. This is not a murder mystery where you look for clues. As a history for the general reader, it needs more clarity... it needs a good edit.Taken as a bio for Richard I, there are a lot of good chapters. The history of the Plantagenet's Norman roots and French lands, Richard's nuclear family's dysfunction, the Third Crusade, Richard's captivity and the siege of Richard's Castle of the Rock are highlights. There is a chapter on Richard's castle building, while of marginal interest to me, seemed very well done. The author seems quite knowledgeable and while the text is mixed, she demonstrates some style. A good editor could put this together very well.If you are knowledgeable about Richard I, you can pass this one up. If you are interested an overview of this time in European history and don't mind the above problems with the text, it is a short book/quick read that does tell the story.

A Misleading Title About a Biography of Richard I By Greg Polansky Clash of Crowns suffer from a misleading title that draws the reader into a story that is not what one expects. Mary McAuliffe writes a straightforward political-military history of the early Kings (and disputed Queen) of England/Normandy. This history is almost solely about Richard I aka Richard the Lionheart. William the Conqueror is barely discussed. Eleanor of Aquitaine, Richard's mother, is discussed a little bit more, but still not enough that she should appear in the title of this book. The book's focus ends in 1204, the year one of Richard's fortresses in Normandy fell and the year that Normandy would be effectively lost to the English. What else happens in 1204? The death of Eleanor of Aquitaine. Which was not mentioned. The book, sadly, is also severely disjointed. Rather than progressing in chronological order, it flips back and forth during the first half so that unless the reader is familiar with Norman and Plantagenet history and Capetian history. The Capetians - rulers of France - figure prominently in the story, and reading about Philip Augustus is interesting. But overall, the book is more of a chronicle of kings and battles than it is an analysis or a good book about the time period. And I wonder at the title - trying to ride the Game of Thrones wave? Not a bad marketing move but I wish that the editors had thought about the contents of the book as much as they did about the title. Then there is some questionable patronizing of the reader as when the author towards the beginning of the book states "King Henry II of England had thus most grievously jeopardized relations with his Continental overlord, the king of France, on the heels of yet other causes for hostility (a tedious list for the reader, but not for the French king). Is the list tedious for me to read or for you to write out and analyze??But if this period does interest you, I would recommend you find the historical fiction books of Ellen Jones or other history books that cover the period in more depth and without strange mentions of King Arthur and Merlin (and I absolutely love the entire Arthur mythos!) at the beginning of the book.

As colorful as its protagonists By Ulsterman McAuliffe is a capable and entertaining writer, and she makes this fascinating (and often confusing) era come to life, and the reader comes away with a vivid impression of England's king Richard I, with McAuliffe scraping away the layers of legend and revealing the human (and occasionally superhuman) figure underneath. Thankfully, she writes history "as is," and the book is not tainted with the Political Correctness that is so prominent in historical writing today.

By the summer of 1940, the overwhelming might of the German air force had triumphed over Poland, Norway, France, Holland and Belgium. As the fighters and bombers of the Luftwaffe amassed on the north west coast of Europe, they had no reason to believe that the heavily outnumbered squadrons of the Royal Air Force (RAF) would prove any more difficult to overcome than their earlier opponents. However, these illusions of invulnerability were soon to be shattered in whirling combats over southern England in the conflict that would be known as the Battle of Britain.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. No! This is a very good book! By Kiersten I found this book to be superb. It is not a day-by-day laundry list of actions. Rather, it gives an overview of the Battle, and then breaks it down into several components. For instance, there is a chapter about the RAF leading up to late 1940, and then a succeeding chapter that goes over the development history of four planes they used, the Hurricane, Spitfire, Defiant, and Blenheim; with cutaway draweings of the two main fighters. Next is a chapter on the Luftwaffe, followed by a breakdown of the Bf109, Bf110, He111, Do17, and Ju88. And so on. What I found most fascinating was a breakdown of the fighter and bomber tactics used by each side, with numerous illustrations. There are a number of sidebars listing things like codewords both sides used over the radio. There are several sections written by actual pilots who fought in the Battle. This is not a detailed book meant for the historical researcher. It is an overview of the Battle, quite detailed in some areas, with lots of glossy photos, drawings, and maps. I learned a lot of minutiae (flaws in one plane's radios, pecularities of this or that engine, and so on), more than I've seen in any other book intended for a similar audience. I highly recommend this book.

With small info on all the participating pilots in The Battle of Britain, the aircraft used by both the Luftwaffe and the RAF, and a day in the life of both RAF and Luftwaffe pilots... this book is deffinatly worth seeking out- regardless of the cost! It has a brilliant forward by Air Marshal Sir Denis Crowley-Milling (whom I greatly admire, along with Douglas Bader, Johnnie Johnson, and a few others), it is described in the best way possible. It is deffinatly a must get!

I haven't enjoyed a book on this subject so much since I came across Len Deighton's volume back in the 70's.Most of the reviewers here give high marks to this volume and rightly so. To make a totally parabolic statement such as "if it isn't in this book, you don't need to know it" would be a bit much, but not by much. Seldom in a book on WWII have I seen so much various detail and information packed between the covers. This is not a book you will read in a day, possibly in not a few days. Encompassing 325 b/w and color photos and illustrations, it also boasts full-color 3D aerial battle maps, maps which help illustrate the tactics used by both sides.I've had this oversize book in my home library since Summer, 2000, and still prize it greatly. Anyone having the slighted interest in this battle will no doubt have interest in this fine book as well.Semper Fi.

A beautiful, radiant girl is swept aside when she has to start wearing glasses. It was not usual for ladies to sport specs and the term "men don't make passes at girls that wear glasses" was not only true in the 19th-century but generally believed. A fun story especially when she goes blind and can no longer see herself. A nobleman refuses her but her steady companion loves her with or without the glasses. When I think of how fashionable glasses are today, it's almost unbelievable. Of course, the glasses at that time were anything but attractive, according to Mr. James.

Have you ever been caught between two vibes? One that invites you to celebrate life and another that makes you retreat into your fears? The Silent Compass captures this elusive dance with our highest state of consciousness. Through a series of short messages and poems, this book explores the struggle of wandering souls who relentlessly seek a treasure. A treasure they had never lost. Drifting along, they try to piece the fragile puzzle together. But there is no missing piece. A child seeks her place in a wasted space. Others are caught up in the circuit of mass consciousness, desperate to fit into the societal molds that have been carved out for them. Sometimes, they get fleeting glimpses of a larger truth underlying all of existence. Consistently, a powerful force etched into their very beings from the time of their birth calls out longingly in the stillness of the night. Patiently, it knocks upon the doors of their hearts. It is a familiar voice.

Meditations for the modern world By Salman Jaffer Wisened beyond her years, Serene Martin clearly captures the moments in all our lives with memories that are common to us all. A modern day Marcus Aurelius. Reminds us of the magic that surrounds us with a taste of her words like fine art she captures both depth and clarity with the gravity of her words. Most times, it feels like watching a painting or re-living the moments from the day we were born.

THE SILENT COMPASS SAYS IT ALL By Raine Award Winning Author "The Silent Compass" born of an author who has seen all facets of life, from the loving - tooth harshness of a prison. This work is truly from a writer who is in touch with her inner being and has been strong enough NT to be trampled down in the everyday heartaches of daily living amidst demands from society - these writings are from a delicate butterfly.Serena Martin writes "We are born as free as butterflies" and in her intuitive knowing she writes "So decide if the mind or soul will lead."These insights jog me into real awareness of the life around us, and oh m goodness I am only on the second poem or insight! The author writes as easily of Indigo Children as she does to those lost to themselves Serena Martin has a unique ability to tap into the spiritual world with ease and at the same time treat the disconnection of those that are lost and only live for one day at a timed until we "start valuing our lives by either doing something that matters or nothing at all, so that every single thing we do brings us closest to growing to TH eight within us."The Author's ability to so simply touch the light within us through he poetry is real very endearing. "The Silent Compass paves the way."

Much wisdom is contained in all these magical words. A true reminder of who we are, a spirit of love in a physical body walking a spiritual path. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. If I Could Catch Time in a Bottle..... By Anastasia McPherson Books with dual authorship are often problematic because of idiosyncrasies in syntax and tone. That is not the case here where the two author format gives extra depth and richness to all of the characters. Set in Boston in the eighties, Vermilion at first seems to be an exercise in nostalgia, but it isn't, written in the late eighties, it is a genuine portrait of a more innocent time when debauchery was well intended and which was all too brief. It is both serious and funny examining homophobia and the fate of lost young adults on one hand and the bantering, loving friendship of gay men and straight women on the other.Daniel Valentine and Clarisse Lovelace are friends, young adults who are on the verge of having to either get serious about life or adjust their aspirations. Daniel tends bar in an upscale gay club, having lost his job as a prison social worker due to political machinations. Clarisse is nominally in real estate. A young hustler, the kind of lost young man nobody but his tricks notice, has been found dead, dumped on the lawn of a publicly and cynically homophobic politician. Daniel and several key others observed him on the night of his death, though nobody seems to have noticed the man who accompanied him. What follows is not only a mystery, but a romp through the dark and light sides of the eighties...the fun, the friendships, the fruits of the sexual revolution, the decaying cities, the anomie and disenfranchisement and the shadow of AIDS. All of this is served up with a light hand. The mystery is well plotted, even though the friendship between Clarisse and Valentine is the driving force of the book, as it should be, as this is the opening volume of a series, all scheduled for publication by Felony and Mayhem.Sex, sexuality and sexual escapades are referred to, but never graphic. There is nothing to offend here. The banter is snappy, the characters realized and the setting lived. A wonderful way to while away an afternoon in times gone by and friendships remembered with a grotty mystery with a social conscience almost as a bonus. Lovelace and Valentine are characters to love and I highly recommend not only this opening volume, but the three in the series that follow. For those who are interested, I liked this enough that I researched the authors and found that one, Michael McDowell, wrote great Southern Gothics with a horror flavor that are more than worth exploring. I also recommend Felony and Mayhem Press, a publisher that does beautiful reprints of sophisticated mysteries and thrillers in several sub-genres, books that have been forgotten but deserve continued readership. I've discovered many treasures in the Felony and Mayhem list. All fans of mysteries will find a gem at Felony and Mayhem.

I found it funny, well written and a slice of East Coast Gay life! Now, after re-reading it, and the series over again, I am drawn to its nostalgia!

Whatever your hardware (electric, nylon. . .) or your software (theory geek, riff glutton. . .) this book is just the muse you've been looking for. It is a comprehensive, uniquely inclusive guide to the guitar's wide swath of harmonic possibilities. I begin by deriving the western chromatic scale from its antecedents (after all, math is music). I then adapt the circular symmetry of music to the rectilinear geometry of the fret board. The many charts and tablature diagrams contained herein are wieldy and easily copied in color for music stands. There is no deference to subgenre or musical style – this is not a handbook on how to imitate any particular guitar legend. But any book with this much data cannot be closed without at least a cursory glance at techniques and ways of bringing its contents to life. The last chapter does this in a way that helps you construct exercises of your own.

About the Author He doesn't remember when he last changed his guitar strings. Every set goes the distance and as each wire rots increased effort is required to make it truly sing (he is better for the effort). Besides, he couldn't part with them if he tried; his radio antenna is a tuft of old metal darlings – a real bouquet. He also teaches physics.

By Parka [[VIDEOID:ac65e3b55d9c7ae5fa68eb10d7cd004b]]This is the third book from the Sketching from the Imagination series published by 3dtotal Publishing. I love all three of them and I hope they keep coming up with more volumes. The book is still satisfyingly thick at 320 pages. 50 artists are featured. The sketches and artworks are really beautiful and inspiring. There's a lot of variety and the artists commentary talks about their love for sketching, inspiration and some tips. Even in black and white, the designs look terrific. Once again, I'm marvelled by the level of details and intricacy of the many sketches. This particular volume focuses on sci-fi. I still see quite a significant portion on character designs, in sci-fi style of course. There are also the occasional mechas, sci-fi environments, alien plants, etc. Most highly recommended to all who loves sketchbooks.Well worth the money!(See more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

Excellent collection of science fiction work By Bees Totally disagree with the bio-bizarre review... sounds like a really narrow idea of what sci-fi is. It's science fiction - which is much more than mechs and transformers. This book is so enjoyable, and represents a nicely curated and varied sampling of the genre. The wide range of techniques and approaches combined with the personal writing is fantastic. These sketching from the imagination books are easily among my favorites.

This isn't a book to teach you how to draw, it's a book that inspires you to create By Amazon Customer After falling in love with the Sketching From The Imagination, I was thrilled to find the new Sci-Fi and Fantasy books and they do not disappoint. The Sci-Fi book is filled with some great art and some truly unique styles. There is a great mix of concepts from alien life forms, to spaceships, robots, mechs, spacesuits, and other wild future imaginings. The art alone is worth it. But when you add in the comments and tips from each artist, it really makes this (and the other books in this series) a great place for inspiration and for picking up new ideas and techniques. Of all my art books, the Sketching from the Imagination books are the ones I pick up most often. I love to just flip thru them at random and almost always find myself pulled in and losing track of time.I recommend these books for anyone whether you are a beginner or an expert or even if you don't draw. These books aren't books that teach you how to draw, they are books that inspire you to create. So if you want to stir your imagination, or peak behind the curtains and get inside the head of some talented artists, or just enjoy some excellent and sometimes quirky Sci-Fi art, then flip through the pages of this wonderful book. I dare you not to feel inspired to grab a pen or pencil and start some sketches of your own.

*Includes pictures *Includes accounts of the major battles of the Scottish Wars of Independence *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents “A false usurper sinks in every foe And liberty returns with every blow.” – Blind Harry From their very beginnings, England and Scotland fought each other. Emerging as unified nations from the early medieval period, their shared border and inter-related aristocracy created endless causes of conflict, from local raiders known as border reivers to full blown wars between their monarchies. Every century from the 11th to the 16th was colored by such violence, and there were periods when not a decade went by without some act of violence marring the peace. Out of all of this, the most bitterly remembered conflict is Edward I's invasion during the late 13th century. After Edward’s death, the English were eventually beaten back at the famous Battle of Bannockburn in 1314, and thus the early 14th century was a period featuring some of Scotland's greatest national heroes, including William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. It still resonates in the Scottish national memory, all the more so following its memorable but wildly inaccurate depiction in the 1995 film Braveheart, which had Scottish audiences cheering in cinemas. William Wallace is one of the most famous freedom fighters in history, and over 700 years after his death he is still remembered as Scotland’s beloved hero. But while the movie Braveheart helped make him a household name, and he is commemorated across Scotland as a natural leader and a loyal son of his homeland, he is also “the most mysterious of the leaders of the Scottish resistance to Edward I.” This is because, paradoxically, the very famous soldier is also one of the least well known. In fact, the mystery surrounding Wallace is figuring out precisely, or even vaguely, who he was. Where did this champion of Scottish independence come from? Who was his family? What did he do before emerging from obscurity with the brutal murder of William Heselrig, the English sheriff of Lanark, in May 1297? So little evidence on Wallace’s life exists that answering even the most basic questions about him can be a challenge. Piecing together the story of William Wallace’s life is an exercise in asking more questions than can be answered, and often in looking at just as much conjecture as proof. This book attempts to separate fact from fiction while looking at the life and fighting of the man who inspired Braveheart. Though it’s often forgotten today, Robert the Bruce was a bit shiftier, if only out of necessity. Robert the Bruce has become a figure of Scottish national legend, renowned as the man who threw off the shackles of English oppression, but prior to 1306, this Anglo-Scottish nobleman did little to cover himself in glory or to earn a reputation as a hero of the national cause. A member of one of Scotland's leading noble families, Bruce inherited his grandfather's claim to the right to be King of the Scots. That older Bruce had been one of the two leading competitors in the Great Cause, and the family still held ambitions toward the throne. They also held resentments dating back to that disputed inheritance against the Balliol clan and their supporters the Comyns. Of course, this was all forgiven and forgotten after Bannockburn and Bruce’s rise to the Scottish throne, which he held for over two decades. This book analyzes the lives of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about the two Scottish heroes like never before.

It's disappointing that so much is unknown and the author, as well as the readers, are forced to guess or assume on so much of Wallace's life and, to a lesser degree, Robert the Bruce. I happily endorse this quick, interesting read.

Informative and smartly written By Jerry Skinner With the information out there, the author(s) pieced together the true (as best as possible) stories of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. The book is well written, easy to read and informative.

THANK YOU PUBLISHER. I thought I would have to track it down in a university library but there it was! $8 and 30 seconds later I had it. Unbelievable. They can't sell many of these. The book is a reminiscence of his time in confinement on Ventotene in the early '40s. Many intimate portraits of his fellow, often famous, prisoners. It's wonderful how the digital age makes what would be obscure books available to anyone. Still, someone has to do it so I thank the publishers again for doing it.

Jerome “Hoosier” Elliott is the President of the Night Horde SoCal. He has worn a patch for many years, and he’s led his club, and his family, through times of strength and times of struggle. For most of those years, his old lady, Bedelia Beth—“Bibi” to those who know and love her—has stood by his side. Club life has had its challenges, some almost insurmountable, but they have made each other strong and waited for each other always. Together, they made the club a family. After club violence tears them apart, Hoosier needs Bibi to find him and bring him back. The way to their future is their past: the story of the life they’ve made together, and the dreams they’ve dared to make come true. Note: explicit sex and violence

Hoosier and Bibi are the perfect couple - a couple that has been through hell, more than once, but they always come through it - together."She stayed with him. She would always stay with him."Hooj and Bibi's past and present had me hooked to my kindle - I felt so many emotions through their story, mainly, I felt the love they shared, and it was beautiful. Honestly, I can't really put into words how much I loved this story... I highly recommend it

This is Hoosier, Jerome Andrew Elliott, the president of the Night Horde SoCal MC and Bibi, Bedelia Beth Ladue, his old lady and mother to all tale. This story takes place in both the present and the past as Bibi fights to bring Hooj back to those who love him. Their story starts with Hoosier in hospital still recovering from the fire. He’s awake but he can’t speak, he’s learning to walk and has to develop his motor skills and he only recognizes Bibi. The doctors fear due to his age and his injuries, if he doesn’t start communicating soon, he will be lost to them. So Bibi tells him their story to “Lead him back to the present.” And so it begins…”You know what. Darlin’ I am goin’ to tell you a story today. It’s the best story I know.”This is a story of the strength of love and endurance of a relationship through the good, the bad and the ugly. Hooj and Bibi have a 42 year marriage that has seen and endured it all. I can’t tell you how each Fanetti novel I read seems like my favourite at the time because of how well Ms. Fanetti evokes the voices, the hearts and the minds of her characters.Living through the eyes of Hoosier and Bibi was emotional and also absolutely inspiring. It truly demonstrates that even through the tears, the blood, the scars –physical and mental – setbacks and heart ache, true love can persevere. The human heart, mind and spirit is a formidable foe and with its soul mate at its side, it will not be broken or shaken no matter what.Another awesome read from Ms. Fanetti!

Bibi and Hooj have been the strength for everyone in the MC for so long. They have a strong sense of family and take care of their own. I was so excited to read their love story. This one has humor, sorrow and so much true love. Keep your kleenix handy. No spoilers but you will need to read at least the book prior to this one before you dive in.I love how this author is able to take us right to the edge of such strong emotions and then carry us back to a safe place again. Not just once, but multiple times during the story. I find myself reluctant to write reviews on these books. I don't want to share any of those feels I get! I recommend starting from the beginning with book 1 and then going forward from there.

My eyes hurt from all of the eye rolling moments induced by bad grammar, poor plot, an immature character I could not root for, and an unrealistic ending wrapped up so poorly and so fast it must have been past the poor authors bedtime.
