The main character, Alice, is endearingly lost but luckily has a group of supportive friends (who are equally flawed and trying to find their way). Good thing too because Alice's dysfunctional family are hard work. I read this book in one night, chuckling often, sad at times and now slightly afraid of going to hospital and being 'that' patient, and with a greater respect for nurses in general.

The appealing way in which the author relates to readers the daily lives of ordinary people makes the pages fly by and leave you wanting more. I found myself connecting to the characters and their situations. It was a breath of fresh air to have a slightly older, imperfect heroine. The sense of humour evident in the writing appeals very much to my own, somewhat self deprecating, and this drew me further in. Can't wait for more from this author.

Another great Jane By Patricia Looking for Wonderland is so funny and outrageous that I spent most of my time gasping at the barefaced audacity of some of the characters (especially the all too realistic family members), or just laughing at the situations that, although bizarre, you just know must be based in fact. You can't make this stuff up! There is never a dull moment in this book.Alice is at a crossroads, grasping for direction and meaning in her life. She has a couple of terrific friends who offer support and a boot up the backside by turns as all three attempt to improve themselves and their prospects for happiness. Despite Alice's gentle and generous nature and occasional naivety, she is capable of searing insights. She swears like a trouper and drinks like a fish and would be excellent company if she stepped off the page. The characters in Looking for Wonderland are all wonderfully drawn. Alice's dragon of a mother is a gorgon to match Lady Catherine de Bourgh in Pride and Prejudice. I believe that if Jane Austen were writing in the 21st Century, Looking for Wonderland would be just what she would write. It is a comedy but there is plenty of heft underneath the laughs.I can't wait for Looking for Wonderland to be made into a film.
