It’s divided into three parts: A-Side: Border Stories, B-Side: Shifting Gears, and the Bonus Track. His play on musical records may only blatantly tie into a few of his odd stories, but when you think about how each character whistles to their own tune, the music they decide to play, it makes much more sense.I had the pleasure of hearing Gabriel read aloud the second story in the A-Side: Border Stories section called In the House of Mr. Poo, which is one reason why I slightly favor that story in his collection. Its remote location on an island and the bizarre situation put upon the unassuming Mr. and Mrs. Poo is sure to hold your attention throughout the story. The Road Goes Ever On took an intriguing point of view from a hitchhiking, wandering young man. After waiting for a ride for what seems like ages to the young man, he meets an older wanderer and decides to tag along. The older man definitely portrays what the young man’s future could become if he continues on his trail of having no “life-lines,” as the old man referred to family and connections.I see it completely fitting that Gabriel’s epilogue says, “For Alex and Even, to add to the stories told ‘round the fire…” because that’s what this collection is – stories that emit a certain mystery, darkness and intrigue, perfect for a night with friends by a nighttime bonfire in nature’s equally mysterious and uncontrollable air.

These stories of travel create a world of magic, both real and supernatural. With his prose, Gabriel finds a way to educate readers on the struggles of miscommunication in a lyrical, masterful way. The trials that people face when confronted with gaps in culture can be difficult to capture, but that is not the case with Gabriel’s novel, Wrestling with Angels. The short story format of this novel helps to push readers on, making it a quick and enjoyable read. These stories cover a wide variety of experiences, from travels in the Middle East, to England, to our own back yard, and to a connection between a young boy and his blind grandfather. Gabriel has created beautiful characters who bring emotion and life into the novel while bringing to life my own dreams of travel and cross-cultural experience and also reminding me of the time I spent with my beloved grandfather who struggled with Alzheimer’s Disease. Without a doubt, this is a book that belongs in your home library.

Daniel Gabriel’s collection of stories in Wrestling with Angels shows us some of the effects when people fail to communicate and understand others. This can often happen, as Gabriel illustrates, between people of different nationalities or between a grandfather and his grandson. He also shows us that shining moment when two people connect and understand one another perfectly.Wrestling with Angels is separated into three parts with an extra story at the end. The first is a collection of stories that take place near national borders and show the trials and tribulations that can occur in those areas. The second part lands closer to home, taking place mostly in America. Half of this part focuses on a boy and his relationship with his blind grandfather. The stories range from dealing with everyday life to following the escapades of the criminal kind and will sometimes leave you with a few more questions than answers, but are a delightful read all the same.
