By Javier Why does every book on guitar making spend 30 pages talking about the history of Fenders and Gibsons, and explaining how a pickup works (yet again)? Just tell me how to build the guitar, dude! Well, this guy does that, and then more: This is how you design, build, and sell an electric guitar (or a bass, in my case.) I am giving this book five stars, three black holes, two supernovae, and an ever expanding singularity of engorged Luck Dragons. Highly recommended.

I found it to be more detailed and clear than other books I have read on solid body guitar making (and I have read them all!) It explains the proper use of tools and power tools, it explains the best way to organize your workshop, and presents the most understandable explanation of guitar finishing yet. But the thing that makes it unique is the chapters on marketing. I haven't found a discussion of the commercial side of professional guitarmaking, because no luthiers would reveal their secrets in this area. But this one does exactly that.The book itself is fun to read, with touches of humour here and there. Highly recommended.

By Luciana After reading his first book "Electric guitar & Bass Design" Leo brings us this very thorough and fun to read book on everything you need to know about making your own instrument. I've already applied it and couldn't be more pleased with the amount of information and years of experience, all in this wonderful book. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Ross Greene’s fine book, his uncle, Ross W. “Bud” Perrin ponders his legacy. “I know I want a houseful of little rascals. And if I can’t tell them my story, who will?” Perrin did not live to have that houseful of little rascals, but he did have someone tell his remarkable story, his nephew and namesake, J. Ross Greene, who had been like a son to Perrin during the war years. Greene stepped forward to not only tell the story but to reconstruct the wartime experiences of his uncle so that Perrin’s daughter, who would never know her father, would come to know that father and wartime hero. Greene created this book based on 1000 wartime letters exchanged between Perrin and his wife, choosing the letters that best exemplified the life of a B-17 bombardier anxious to return home after victory to embrace his wife and meet his child. Through the letters, readers can get to know Ross Perrin and his wife and their extended family. Through Greene’s meticulous research, he has created a chronicle that portrays life in the ETO simultaneously with life at home for those who waited… all done with rich detail. He also imparts bits of knowledge about operations, the B-17, the administrative task of planning missions, the German planes, wartime London, and interesting historical facts about locations central to the war. Greene has breathed life into words scrawled on pages seven decades passed, making them as relevant and compelling today as they were back then. 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Fortress is a MIGHTY book in many ways. By Rosalind Davis I must begin by revealing that I have a personal interest in this book. My father is the main character and my cousin (Palsy Walsy to my dad) is the author. In the book, I am the not-yet-born Junior who turned out to be Juniorette. Yet, I feel compelled to express these thoughts: A Fortress and A Legacy far exceeds the expectations of this lit major, retired English instructor who is not easy to please when it comes to books. As I read the draft, before the final editing, I wondered —how did this civil engineer, turned financial wizard write this beautiful and heartfelt story with such well crafted prose, not to mention some poetry as well! Based on my parents' letters, Fortress is interwoven with a history lesson told in such a compelling manner that you don't have to be a history buff to enjoy it. Although in my retirement I may no longer be considered an expert, I venture to say that J. Ross has created his own genre. His name for it, “a non-fiction historical novel,” may appear to be a contradiction in terms, but please reserve judgment until you see how well he uses the actual letters, factual war records, personal interviews with surviving veterans, plus a little bit of imagination based on knowledge to give this book, in my opinion, its unique literary value. Indeed Fortress not only gives me a vibrant word picture of the father I never knew but also gives any reader a masterful depiction of the way these young men faced separation from families, the intensity and frustrations of training, and the actual pressures of carrying out their missions. And beyond this is the story of those back home—waiting, praying, supporting through letters, in some cases searching for information and then finally grieving. I'm amazed, but not really surprised, at my cousin's tenacity and determination in finding the people he interviewed and in some cases befriended, along with his painstaking search through war records to fill out the story inspired by the letters. And I am beyond proud of how he was able to bring people I knew and loved to life on the printed page and then introduce me to others that I now love as family. You may cry in parts of the book, but you will learn about and love some previously “unsung” heroes, and don’t be surprised if you have an occasional laugh. I give much praise and endless gratitude to my author cousin (a hero in my heart) for this mighty book.

I loved being transported to upstate New York and became immediately wrapped up in the main character’s story. I fell in love with Miss Euphrates, the African-American caregiver to main character, Joss. I wanted to be the one sitting in the brightly lit, warm kitchen filled with lovely aromas—swept up in capturing every word that Miss Euphrates spoke . . .while learning her baking secrets. Author, Marie White Small is a masterful storyteller. She transports readers into a splendidly detailed land along a river called Stony Kill, weaving a tale of sorrow and redemption amongst breathtaking landscapes with imaginative dialogue. She left me wanting more. I would love to be in a book club discussing Stony Kill!

The impact of gun violence on all who experience it is woven into this dramatic novel by Marie White Small. The characters all have distinct and wonderful voices and without being in anyway clinical the author demonstrates what it's like to have PTSD. It was a book I couldn't put down.

Look elsewhere for good examples By Amazon Customer Promising cover but the actual content is full of really poorly designed examples, a great number of those do not fulfill some very basic logo requirements. The way logos are categorized is not exactly helpful, either. If you are into really proper examples of professional, timeless logo design, try "Logo: The Reference Guide to Symbols and Logotypes" by Michael Evamy. I've bought these two at the same time and the difference is beyond comparison, clearly in favor of the latter.

In 1925, young Teddy goes for a walk with his Aunt Izzie. He tries to share his love and knowledge of things in nature with her, but she does not seem interested. Teddy is upset by the fact that Izzie claims to have eaten a skylark. Izzie asks him questions about his likes and dislikes. She later uses his answers to write a series of books loosely based on him even though the main character is nothing like Teddy. Teddy hates the books and the fact that they are dedicated to him.

When World War II begins, Teddy signs up. He is relieved to be escaping work at the bank with his father…

Curnutt I gave a five star review not because I necessarily think "A God in Ruins" is a great book, frankly I haven't read that book yet.But this CLIFF NOTES style summary and anaylsis of the book is really a nice thing to have. This is my first Instaread summary that I have downloaded to my Kindle and thus I was curious as to what it would give me.First of all, the Instaread Summaries are very short, this one was about 21 pages long. But they are full of information.They start by giving you a summary of the book. The summary hits the high points and basically outlines the book for you. The only problem that I see from reading this is that at times they can contain "Spoilers." In this case it did give some of the plot thread away that many would say is a spoiler.The next section is the Character's section. They take each character and give you an overview of that character, i.e. are they good, bad, conflicted, narciscistic, etc. I found this very helpful because it helps you get up to speed very quickly on the characters of the Novel. So, if you decide to buy the novel you will have a firm grip on the characters as you start. BUT, that does take some of the thrill out of the read as character development is one way you can tell if an author is good or bad.Finally is the anaylsis of the book. They give you their thoughts on the book, they are not prejudice one way or another, they just state the facts as they see them.In the case of this book, the anaylsis points out that the author jumps back and forth from present to past to future. The author also has some times when you find it hard to follow because of all the movement through time periods and peoples lives.For me this gave me a good idea of whether I would like to buy the novel. I don't particularly like writing that goes back and forth, present, to past to future. I usually find that they are cumbersome and cause some frustration in reading.So, with that in mind it gives me a better handle on the novel, I can now read reviews of the real book and decide with a more informed background whether I want to spend the money to buy the book or not.This summary seems a bit pricey at $2.99 for a Kindle Cliff Notes type of book. But I'm not sure how much they should charge, I would think maybe $1.50, but again, I'm not disappointed that I spent $3.00 to help determine if I might like this novel and author.

In addition to having to keep up with book club readings, I also need to be able to have an intelligent conversation about some of these books and tend to get them confused easily. This is where I have found Summary & Analysis companions to be so helpful and I love this one for Kate Atkinson's "A God in Ruins". One of the better books that I have read this year, it is also quite involved, and this companion provides a great summary of the book, its characters and the central themes. A must have for me and very well put together.

Gray All I can say is “thank you” to the creators of this summary and analysis. I had to recently create breakdown of this book for school and I can say now that I just didn’t have time to fully absorb the information that I read. I thought the book was really enjoyable but my retention of the material was definitely lacking. I purchased this book during my mad dash to finish my study and hoped that it would serve the purposes I needed it for. Thankfully, it did. The author does a stellar job of keeping things uncomplicated by breaking down the book into easy to understand sections. From the summary and the main character breakdown all the way to the themes and author’s style, this is way more than what cliff notes can offer. The work here is dense with observational studies alongside an objective dissemination of the book it is reviewing. By the time I finished it I was more than capable of completing my paper. Now, due to this well thought out and professionally written companion, I have again been saved from a bad grade. Also, alongside that, I learned just how great a God in Ruins really is.

It was very entretaning, the kind of books that can be read quickly, or more deeply. It's moving. Makes the reader question herself: did the main character do the right thing? Did she sacrifice herself for her child's sake, or her own? Definitely a book that can be read in different levels. Good read.

This gorgeous volume offers the most complete overview in print of the oeuvre of Niki de Saint Phalle, one of the most influential and popular artists of the postwar period. The French-American artist was educated according to the social codes of upper-class New York society, but boldly rejected the expectations of her family to instead choose a career in art. Moving to Paris in the 1960s, she befriended the Nouveau Réaliste artists Martial Raysse, Daniel Spoerri and Jean Tinguely, creating her famous Shooting Paintings, the Nanas (brightly chromatic biomorphic sculptures of female archetypes), as well as experimental films, decors and costumes for ballet productions and collaborations with Tinguely, Robert Rauschenberg and others. Saint Phalle was adept at using the media to consolidate her public image, and soon became an icon of the 1960s art scene, attaining a broad cultural profile that was furthered by her numerous public art projects, including the Tarot Garden in Tuscany and the Stravinsky Fountain in Paris. This superbly produced publication―which features a die-cut cover through which Saint Phalle peers, aiming her gun―presents her works in all media, along with ephemera and archival photographs documenting her rich career and life.Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002) was born near Paris and moved to the US in 1933. During her teen years Saint Phalle was a fashion model and appeared on the cover of Life in 1949 and, three years later, on the cover of French Vogue. At 18 Saint Phalle eloped with author Harry Mathews and moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, and later to Paris, where she exhibited at the Alexander Iolas Gallery. In 1971 Saint Phalle married Jean Tinguely, and throughout that decade created the public sculptures and parks for which she became celebrated. Saint Phalle died of emphysema in California in May 2002.

It contains a marvelously detailed timeline, giving a sense of why a lot of her art looks the way it does ― with a palpable rage, always a contemptuousness flirting with a kind of heartbreaking and joyous beauty. (Paul Maziar artcritical)The show opens with collages and paintings in earnest dialogue with Pollock, Dubuffet, and Rauschenberg that the self-taught artist made between the ages of 28 and 31. From 1960 to 1963 she executed her famous Tirs (Shoot) pieces, which drip like Pollocks but which de Saint Phalle produced by shooting a rifle at balloons of colorful paint mounted on white canvases. In the early 1960s, this aristocratic Catholic woman who’d been brought up in a strict household attacked the church with sculptures in the shape of altars strewn with crucifixes. In the mid-‘60s she constructed giant, heavy-hearted bride-ghosts and modern Venus of Willendorfs squeezing out babies. In perfectly calibrated formal choices, de Saint Phalle disfigured long-held articles of faith ― high art, the family, the church.

But then, seemingly out of nowhere, came the Nanas, those girls as heart-stoppingly different from de Saint Phalle’s previous work as Cézanne’s “The Eternal Feminine” is from any of his still lifes or Mondrian’s grids are from his early writhing trees. These Nanas ― rotund, ebullient, hungry girls dressed in bold primary colors ― twirl on tippy toes and look like they’re having a grand old time. They glance back at French art history to Matisse’s jubilant dancers and the sturdy females of Gaston Lachaise and Aristide Maillol, and even, surprisingly, to Rodin. (Eunice Lipton Hyperallergic)

In this you will learn a great deal about the artist, her inspirations, and her works. I learned much that I had no idea of before. Very well illustrated.

Loved the story, and will definitely be on the lookout for number three in the series. Although I hadn't read the first one, the brief synopsis at the beginning helped me to understand the background of the story. 

The four separate stories in the book are very skillfully woven together in one incredible novel that made me wish I had read the first one, and I will definitely be looking for the next one. 

The characters were well developed, the tale had real meaning to it, not rambling like some stories do but with a definite direction in mind. Blue Sky by Bryant Simmons was a good read.

Excellent Book About Four Sisters and Their Incredible Perseverance By Kieran Hair Having never read “How to Knock a Bravebird from Her Perch” (the first book in the story of the Morrow girls) and having read the reviews and synopsis which stated that the book featured four characters from 1987 to 1991, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I figured each character was featured for a certain span, such as Pecan from 1987-1988, Mya from 1988-1989, and so on. This is not the case. The book only covers the years 1987 and 1991, and the point of view changes quite frequently. This gives it a constant shift in viewpoints which is not unlike that of William Faulkner’s “As I Lay Dying.”This is a good thing, since it helps to keep the story and the characters rather fresh. While there are four main protagonists (Pecan, Mya, Nikki and Jackie), they do not necessarily share the book equally. Pecan was by far my favorite, which was lucky since she appeared to be the most heavily featured earlier in the book. Mya is pretty heavily featured as well, and even narrates the opening chapter (which, set in 1983, helps newcomers to ease into the series). As the book goes on, Jackie occasionally features more than Pecan, and actually has more chapters in total. Nikki has the least, but is certainly not ignored. Each of them has their fair share of drama to deal with, concerning such dark themes as addiction, violence, and other problems that seem insurmountable when the average person is faced with them in daily life.The third book, “How to Kill a Caged Bird,” looks as if it will continue to revolve around Mya slightly more than her sisters, but this is fine. She is one of the strongest characters, although they all demonstrate a great deal of strength considering their hardships. Not only does “Blue Sky” present the reader with excellent dramatic fiction, but it seems as if the Morrow girls series at large could be a source of empowerment for some women who have felt bogged down by the problems life throws at them. A truly fantastic book.

For the Young Adult: How Foresight Can Change Destiny By Scarlett Jensen This book, the second in the series, confirms the role of family ties in the future of young persons. We meet a family united under one roof during the time period 1983 to 1991, after foster care separated the lives of the siblings, for a time. The author is sensitive to the forces that can break - up relationships between siblings and parents. We get to know the factors she regards as crucial for a growing teen, specifically the needs and tribulations of girls.The dialogue is well thought out, simple and spontaneous, giving colour to each of the characters and that which underlines their diversity, thoughts, soul and physicality. Each character, depending on age and outlook, is confronted with choices regarding:-- Safety, social, educational, religious and cultural support;-- Familial rules;-- Inter-family relationships, love and marriage;-- Sibling rivalry, jealousy;-- Family tragedy, conflict and illness;-- Perils, moral challenges, and pitfalls in life;-- Growing-up pains, sacrifices, career choices, loyalties, trust and forgiveness.The author knows the heart of a girl and gives through her entertaining writings, her characters roles to teach young people to have fun and be safe. Through adhering to discipline and set boundaries which are so easily crossed under peer pressure, teens are shown the values to help them tow a straight line.Young adults will have time well spent when reading this series.Scarlett Jensen9 July 2015

After reading How to Knock a Bravebird from Her Perch, I just HAD to grab this one to see how the Morrow Girls fared at the end of the first book. The three oldest girls, plus Pecan tell their own stories in this tale. I'm amazed, again, at how the writing in this novel gives you a piece of everyone-- how some of the girls endear themselves to Pecan, how some of them worshipped and revered RIcky, how some have pulled away altogether. And as the girls grow into women, how Pecan tries to keep them from making the mistakes that she made as a young woman who didn't know any better.I'm chomping at the bit for book three but I am told it'll be awhile. I'll be waiting!

I recall a saying painted in our school walls about exercising the brain to make us become more intelligent. Definitely, if we want to improve intelligence or memory, we need habitual work to do such.Moreover, since I am struggling now with recalling details and some other things to do (even if I'm still 25), I found this book very helpful and beneficial. By Nikki Ryan Some of the tips you may already know about like Mnemonics, but there are certainly a lot of others that you might not. The tip on how to remember birthdays better was definitely useful 'coz I suck at remembering them. Haha! I also love the small part at the beginning about some food that are great for memory. Now, I want to plant avocados in my backyard! LOLAnyway, if you need help improving your memory retention, GRAB THIS BOOK. It has a lot of great ideas that you can incorporate in your everyday life.

Reminds you to take time to stop and appreciate the beauty that God has created. While everyone is busy rushing around from place to place in their daily lives Kendra's book serves as a reminder to take time to stop and just be; you never know what will happen. Sometimes when we are so busy or everything seems to be going wrong it can be hard to remember God has a purpose for everything it may take us a while to see what that purose is, but it will be shown to us.

"Looking for the Good" By Susan Whitcomb Winnetka 60093 is a well-written and refreshing window into the people, history and traditions that characterize this small Illinois village. Every town has unsung heroes -- humanitarians, innovators, artists, athletes and public servants, but we don’t usually get to learn their stories. What inspires them? Why do they do what they do? My favorite stories in the book are about people who use their skills and experience to help others: the energetic director of a youth organization, the inspiring music teacher, the doctor who gives his time to help babies with deformities. Ms. Marihugh’s thoughtful portraits of Winnetkans are inspiring and so is her preface to the book where she explains her motivation for compiling these stories in a blog – a deliberate decision to spend a year “looking for the good.” What if each of us spent a year looking for the good in our communities? I think we would create a world with less conflict, more compromise and infinitely more hope for the future.

I was delightfully surprised at all the new things I learned. The stories were inspirational about the goodness of human nature. Lessons of following ones passions. Histories touching on Civil Rights issues. Refreshing accounts of people going above and beyond of what is expected of them in their line of work. A collection of heartfelt messages for pondering.
