Just finished reading this book with my elementary-age daughter and we were both enchanted! The story and illustrations are adorable, beautifully done and held her attention the entire time. A very useful tool for classrooms to make the water cycle interesting and understandable for students, and a wonderful read for parents who want to show their kids something so captivating that they may not realize they are actually learning something, too! My daughter is asking if Lily will go on another adventure. We hope she does!

PULP: The Art of Rob Davis In 2005, when Airship 27 Productions was first launched, Rob Davis accepted the position of Art Director and in that time has overseen the look and design of all the Airship 27 Productions novels and anthologies now numbering over a hundred. In his ten years associated with the company, Rob has done hundreds of illustrations featuring both classic and new pulp heroes to include Secret Agent X, Captain Hazzard, the Moon Man, the Black Bat and dozens of others. In his drawings for the Airship 27 Sherlock Holmes anthology series he’s acquired a reputation as one of the premier Holmes & Watson artists working today. That was solidified when he won the first ever Pulp Factory Award in 2009 in the Best Interior Illustrations category for his work in “Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective Vol One.” PULP:The Art of Rob Davis is the first published collection of Davis’ remarkable work and contains 175 black and white pieces; all of which have appeared in the pages of various Airship 27 Productions books. The book features an Introduction by award-winning British writer I.A. Watson and Airship 27 Productions Editor-in-chief Ron Fortier provides a post-essay to round out the volume.

A unique book collecting the great “spot illustrations” of an award-winning illustrator By Bob Deis Writer Ron Fortier and artist Rob Davis already had impressive careers in the realm of comics when they decided to create their own publishing company, Airship 27, about ten years ago. If you’re a fan of comics and graphics novels, you probably know Fortier’s work from things like THE TERMINATOR and GREEN HORNET series, and you’ve seen artwork by Davis in various STAR TREK comics, the ROBYN OF SHERWOOD series and others. When Fortier and Davis launched Airship 27, they began to focus on publishing “New Pulp” novels, written by Ron and other talented writers and illuminated with "spot illustrations "drawn by Rob. The book PULP: THE ART OF ROB DAVIS collects his spot illustrations from many of the popular Airship 27 books, such as the award-winning SHERLOCK HOLMES – CONSULTING DETECTIVE series, BROTHER BONES, CAPTAIN HAZZARD and others. These illustrations are inspired by the classic black-and-white line drawings that were common in books and pulp magazines published in the first half of the 20th Century. And, as Fortier says in the text he wrote for the Davis book, spot illustrations are different from sequential comic art. They capture selected moments described in the book and provide a foundation for readers to use their own imaginations to envision other scenes. To my knowledge, PULP: THE ART OF ROB DAVIS is the first book to collect B&W spot illustrations by an artist working in the New Pulp genre and may be the first to collect such artwork from any genre. That makes it worthy of buying in itself. And, when you look through it, you’ll find that seeing the collected spot illustrations by Davis outside the context of the books they originally appeared in provides a unique viewing experience. It focuses your attention on how good such artwork can be in its own right – and on how good Davis is at it. That makes it a 5-star book to me. By the way, I bought the ebook version and found that the illustrations really pop beautifully on my iPad. Having purchased other Airship 27 books in print format, I’m sure the print edition also looks great.

Leo joined AmeriCorps to do something important with his life. When his team is sent to rebuild St. Bernard Parish after Hurricane Katrina, he believes he’ll finally make a difference in the world. But while other teams do the “real” work of gutting and rebuilding houses, Leo is assigned to the camp newsletter. His friends Snave, Cirelle, and Davy have Equally unglamorous minor jobs in the kitchen and supply rooms. Only Kiley, the girl Leo pines after, spends her days saving “da parish” from ruin. Frustrated, Leo and his friends chafe against authority and each other in a town longing for renewal. They’re all looking for something. Or running from something. Often, both. Inspired by the author’s own experience in the aftermath of Katrina, The Parish is a graphic novel about growing up and the tug-of-war between selfishness and service. In keeping with that spirit, Beating Windward Press donates $1 from each copy sold to the New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A human look By Amazon Customer This story provides an illustrated glimpse into the post katrina world. It is done with a very human touch and approaches from a ground level point of view our nation's muddled response to a disaster most of us (me included) will never be able to fully understand in its scope and tragedy. The story follows a young man who at times seems to be as lost as the almost ghostly remains of the community they are serving. The characters were believable (not so much good or bad, but rather self interested, altruistic, petty, and everything in between - human), and there is even a touch of romance. This is a fast but meaningful read and it left me thinking.

In this unforgettable, award-winning book, New York Times bestselling author Margaret Truman profiles twelve remarkable women, some famous, others little known. They range from a United States senator to a Native American to a first lady. Most wore bonnets and long skirts; few had college degrees; and only a handful stepped into a voting booth. But these women spoke the same language as their sisters today. Truman's look into the past pays tribute to the courage of American women from the Revolution to the present.

Unsung Heroes By Vicki Olson We may not always hear about heroes, but we feel the impact of their contributions' and in Women of Courage Margaret Truman teaches us about some heroes you may not have even known existed. Women of Courage is about 12 different women, some famous, some not so famous, but all of these women did very courageous things in time of great danger. This book made a big impact on my life because it is about women that helped shape early America. One very defining statement that Truman makes about the women in this book is that "...these women had neither desire nor the temperament to play the damsel in distress. They had to deal with their crises courageously for one very good reason: they could not have lived with themselves if they had behaved any other way." (Truman, 1976) (pg 14)This book is a must read for both men and women alike that are interested in knowing the early history of this great country we call The United States of America.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Women of Courage - An Inspirational Read By Debra Ann Krummel Women of Courage gives the reader exactly what one is looking for in such a book. Margaret Truman has extensively researched courageous American women and included many, who despite her scale of attributes (forebearance, grit, guts or gallantry), are long forgotten or not even noticed in the first place. This is a must read for anyone who is looking for heroes, inspiration, or affirmation of human equality.

Leopold Classic Library is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive collection. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Interesting and enlightening from a forgotten perspective By D. D. LeDu Published in 1919, this volume is an anthology of documents relating to the persecution of Jews and the resulting responses by the major nations from prior to 1492 to the (then) present.I think most of us assume that the Jewish dilemma was largely ignored prior to the Balfour Declaration. The official documents and correspondence show clearly that knowledge of and concern for anti-Semitic behavior on the part of nations has a long history. This concern was most often driven by complaints from prominent Jews in England; the resulting official responses were often as not blended with quests to relieve Christians in Moslem countries. In protecting Christians by demanding freedom of religious expression, Jews were protected by default.I learned a lot from this book, which has broadened my understanding of the diplomatic background of the world that we now live in. That it was written without foreknowledge of today's events means it was not filtered by modern prejudices - thus making it all the more interesting. The only fault I find with this book is that documents in French (the diplomatic language of the time) are not translated into English. I do not know how much I missed by being ignorant of French.

In this new and masterful synthesis, Wasserman shows the link between ordinary men and women-preoccupied with the demands of feeding, clothing, and providing shelter-and the elites' desire for a stable political order and an expanding economy. The three key figures of nineteenth-century Mexico-Antonio López de Santa Ana, Benito Juárez, and Porfirio Díaz-are engagingly reinterpreted. But the emphasis in this book is on the struggle of the common people to retain control over their everyday lives. Concerns central to village life were the appointment of police officials, imposition of taxes on Indians, the trustworthiness of local priests, and changes inland ownership. Communities often followed their leaders into one political camp or another-and even into war-out of loyalty. Excesses in partisan politics and regional antagonisms gave rise to nearly eighty years of war, resulting in the nation's economic stagnation between 1821 and 1880 and the mass migration of women from the countryside to the city. The industrialization of urban employment forever altered gender relations. During wartime, women acted as the supply, transportation, and medical corps of the Mexican armies. Moreover, with greater frequency than has been known, women fought as soldiers in the nineteenth century. This account of Mexico from Independence to the Revolution combines lively explanations of social history, political and economic change, and gender relations. Wasserman offers a well-written, thoughtful, and original history of Mexico's nineteenth century that will appeal to students and specialists alike. "At long last, a clear-headed, non-romanticized, and non-adversarial analysis of everyday life and politics across the vast sweep of a century of change and rebirth. This is a first-rate book, expert and highly accessible."--Professor Timothy E. Anna, University of Manitoba ABOUT THE AUTHOR Mark Wasserman is professor of history at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, and the author of books and articles on Mexico’s political and economic history. Making Sense of "Los Años Olvidados" By tejasjj For all its historical riches, the nineteenth century, particularly the first half, is a period in Mexican history neglected by historians for far too long. Almost forty years ago, Nettie Lee Benson lamented the lacunae when she stated that much was yet to be learned about what actually happened during the period between 1810-1857. Fifteen years ago the refrain was much the same when Eric Van Young called this early national period a "hueco." Four years later, Josefina Zoraida Vázquez focused on the lack of attention to nineteenth century Mexico when she characterized this period the "forgotten years." As late as eight years ago, Professor Vázquez exhorted the historical community to apply social and economic histories to clarify who the actors were and what role they played in the political life of nineteenth-century Mexico instead of shrouding the political realities behind the themes of foreign aggressors and pronunciamentos. It would be misleading, however, to interpret the introductory paragraph on this review as characterizing a complete void in historical studies of the period in question-much has been done in the last forty years. Seemingly as a response to Professor Vázquez, Mark Wasserman, whose book is the subject of this review, masterfully synthesized a suite of extant historical works-books and articles-which previously had to be consulted collectively to order and place in perspective this neglected period of Mexican history known erroneously for its chaos and disorder. Everyday Life and Politics in Nineteenth Century Mexico demarcates the nineteenth century into three periods, from the formation of the nation-state until the disastrous war with the United States; Guadalupe Hidalgo through the internecine wars of the Reform ending in the triumph of Liberalism and the Tuxtepec Revolution; and the Profiriato until the dawn of the Mexican Revolution. Wasserman introduces each period with a biographical sketch of the leading figure of the period, in this case being Antonio López de Santa Anna, Benito Juárez and Porfirio Díaz. Additionally, the author provides a brief but useful timeline that orders the period in question. The overarching theme that the author provides for nineteenth-century Mexico is that it was a time of pervasive wars, the most disastrous one for Mexico being the war with the United States followed by the Reform civil wars. And it is this constant warfare that resulted in the nation's economic stagnation and hence inability to develop fully. Furthermore, this constant warfare reverberated in the social space by creating demographic shifts, particularly of women. War and the resulting migrations also irrevocably altered gender relations as women fought wars with greater frequency than had been thought, and migrated to industrialized urban centers and became workers. This book is clearly meant for the introductory survey level, hence its limited bibliography and lack of footnotes. While the bibliography is limited, many more studies were consulted in constructing this synthesis as evidenced by the acknowledgement section of the book and the footnoted acknowledgements at the beginning of each chapter.Everyday Life and Politics in Nineteenth Century Mexico provides a much needed synthesis of nineteenth-century Mexico with an excellent balance of political economy, social and gender history that will surely become the de rigueur introductory survey for students of Mexican history in general and nineteenth-century Mexican history in particular.

Understanding the Relationship Between Mexico and the U.S. By fjlovato The book was very well written and the time flow was held together well enough to see how the train of events and personalities related to one another. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in knowing why Mexico is what it is today and why its relationship with the United States is the ways it is.

Chappell is at his best with this gripping new mystery/thriller. Both traditional and modern Navajo culture are artfully woven around the tale of Mexico’s most ruthless killer loose on the reservation. “ No one knew what a really bad man was… now they do!” Charlie, Thomas and Harley Ponyboy can track prey but can they catch a killer before he catches them? Old and new characters join, in this exciting new addition to the Navajo Nation Mystery series. “Chappell takes a bold new direction with this thriller, raising storytelling and knowledge of the Navajo culture to an entirely new level. We dare you to put it down before the hair-raising end.“ Mojado is a stand alone novel and book number four in the Navajo Nation Mystery Series.

Mojado: A Navajo Nation Mystery, by R. Allen Chappell

From the Author The greater part of my life has been spent in the Southwest, a good bit of it in the back-country. I grew up with the Navajo, went to school with them, and later worked alongside them, forging enduring friendships along the way. Those friendships became the inspiration for this series. My writing focuses on the people of the Four Corners region, past and present. I tend not to romanticize my characters, preferring instead to paint them as I find them. They have much the same qualities, good and bad, as the rest of us. Though this book is a work of fiction, a concerted effort was made to maintain the accuracy of the culture and people, as I have come to know them. I hope you like them as well as I do.This story hearkens back to a slightly more traditional time on the reservation, and while the places and culture are real, the characters and their names are fictitious and any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental.

By Sarah Steele Labeled Chappell's break out novel and now I know why! Fans who have followed Charlie, Thomas, and Harley Ponyboy through past adventures should prepare for the most gripping, dangerous, and heart thumping ride yet. In addition to a Navajo Nation Mystery this is an intense western thriller like nothing I've ever read before and very likely to gain Chappell an entire new legion of fans. Though many compare Chappell to Tony HIllerman he has always been his own writer and this book, his best yet, shatters any mold. How does one of Mexico's bloodiest predators come to stalk the innocents of the Navajo Reservation? Is he the man who will finally prove too much for Charlie, Thomas and Harley? I won't give any spoilers but I can tell you I held my breath for all three at different points in this great story. The true western detail is something anyone who loves Larry McMurtry's early novels will appreciate but it's Michael Crighten fans who will dig into the sheer intensity. I could barely flip the pages fast enough at some points and yet I was afraid to for fear of what would come! This is all thriller and the mystery comes not in a "whodunnit" type way but in a "what the heck will happen next ??!!" way. There are times you'll want to cry, apply the brakes and in one memorable moment cheer!! I'm only sorry it's over, until the next mystery unfolds!

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Read This Book! By Margaret Folks, this book is one of the great books about Navajo people. I lived amongst and worked for Navajo people for 25+ years. I have read every Tony Hillerman book and every book about Navajo people. Only R. Allen Chappell does not sacrifice the way Navajo people are for the plot. While I missed the women in his series in this book, this story is about the journey of three childhood friends who are now men. This story is about the determination and dogged way Navajo men go after someone or something with great intelligence and courage. And I adore the twist at the end of the story, which stunned me, yet made so much sense. I enjoy this series so very much and this book is the best by far. Chappell is going to be one those authors that will become part of the American canon. I cannot wait for the next book.

This was my favorite of his stories, taking the reader up red stone canyons and down deep rutted roads. Love the characters, settings and the story he weaves. I recommend this book to any fans of Western s or Southwest books. You won't be disappointed.A special thanks to the author for supplying this review copy of this book.

The world-wide operations of the U.S. Army in World War II involved an enormous amount of construction and the performance on a comparable scale of many other missions by the Corps of Engineers. This is the first of four volumes that will describe the participation of the Engineers in the war and the contribution they made toward winning it. Better known to the public in peacetime for its civil works, the Corps by the time of Pearl Harbor had turned almost its full attention to military duties. At home the Engineers took over all military construction, and prepared hundreds of thousands of Engineer troops for a variety of tasks overseas. These tasks included not only construction but also a number of other duties more or less related to engineering both in rear areas and in the midst of battle. In performing these duties in World War II the Army Engineers gained a proud record in combat as well as in service. This first volume tells how the Corps organized and planned and prepared for its tasks, and in particular how it trained its troops and obtained its equipment. The volumes still to be published will describe the huge program of military construction in the United States, and Engineer operations overseas in the European and Pacific areas. One of the objectives of the technical service volumes of the Army's World War II series is to capture the point of view of the service concerned. In doing so the authors of the present history, by thorough research and diligent solicitation of assistance, have also brought to their story a broad perspective, and they have told it with a felicity that should make their work a valuable guide to the Army as a whole, to the thoughtful citizen, and to the Engineers who served and who continue to serve the nation in war and in peace.
