Chappell is at his best with this gripping new mystery/thriller. Both traditional and modern Navajo culture are artfully woven around the tale of Mexico’s most ruthless killer loose on the reservation. “ No one knew what a really bad man was… now they do!” Charlie, Thomas and Harley Ponyboy can track prey but can they catch a killer before he catches them? Old and new characters join, in this exciting new addition to the Navajo Nation Mystery series. “Chappell takes a bold new direction with this thriller, raising storytelling and knowledge of the Navajo culture to an entirely new level. We dare you to put it down before the hair-raising end.“ Mojado is a stand alone novel and book number four in the Navajo Nation Mystery Series.

From the Author The greater part of my life has been spent in the Southwest, a good bit of it in the back-country. I grew up with the Navajo, went to school with them, and later worked alongside them, forging enduring friendships along the way. Those friendships became the inspiration for this series. My writing focuses on the people of the Four Corners region, past and present. I tend not to romanticize my characters, preferring instead to paint them as I find them. They have much the same qualities, good and bad, as the rest of us. Though this book is a work of fiction, a concerted effort was made to maintain the accuracy of the culture and people, as I have come to know them. I hope you like them as well as I do.This story hearkens back to a slightly more traditional time on the reservation, and while the places and culture are real, the characters and their names are fictitious and any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental.

By Sarah Steele Labeled Chappell's break out novel and now I know why! Fans who have followed Charlie, Thomas, and Harley Ponyboy through past adventures should prepare for the most gripping, dangerous, and heart thumping ride yet. In addition to a Navajo Nation Mystery this is an intense western thriller like nothing I've ever read before and very likely to gain Chappell an entire new legion of fans. Though many compare Chappell to Tony HIllerman he has always been his own writer and this book, his best yet, shatters any mold. How does one of Mexico's bloodiest predators come to stalk the innocents of the Navajo Reservation? Is he the man who will finally prove too much for Charlie, Thomas and Harley? I won't give any spoilers but I can tell you I held my breath for all three at different points in this great story. The true western detail is something anyone who loves Larry McMurtry's early novels will appreciate but it's Michael Crighten fans who will dig into the sheer intensity. I could barely flip the pages fast enough at some points and yet I was afraid to for fear of what would come! This is all thriller and the mystery comes not in a "whodunnit" type way but in a "what the heck will happen next ??!!" way. There are times you'll want to cry, apply the brakes and in one memorable moment cheer!! I'm only sorry it's over, until the next mystery unfolds!

I lived amongst and worked for Navajo people for 25+ years. I have read every Tony Hillerman book and every book about Navajo people. Only R. Allen Chappell does not sacrifice the way Navajo people are for the plot. While I missed the women in his series in this book, this story is about the journey of three childhood friends who are now men. This story is about the determination and dogged way Navajo men go after someone or something with great intelligence and courage. And I adore the twist at the end of the story, which stunned me, yet made so much sense. I enjoy this series so very much and this book is the best by far. Chappell is going to be one those authors that will become part of the American canon. I cannot wait for the next book.

This was my favorite of his stories, taking the reader up red stone canyons and down deep rutted roads. Love the characters, settings and the story he weaves. I recommend this book to any fans of Western s or Southwest books. You won't be disappointed.A special thanks to the author for supplying this review copy of this book.
