PULP: The Art of Rob Davis In 2005, when Airship 27 Productions was first launched, Rob Davis accepted the position of Art Director and in that time has overseen the look and design of all the Airship 27 Productions novels and anthologies now numbering over a hundred. In his ten years associated with the company, Rob has done hundreds of illustrations featuring both classic and new pulp heroes to include Secret Agent X, Captain Hazzard, the Moon Man, the Black Bat and dozens of others. In his drawings for the Airship 27 Sherlock Holmes anthology series he’s acquired a reputation as one of the premier Holmes & Watson artists working today. That was solidified when he won the first ever Pulp Factory Award in 2009 in the Best Interior Illustrations category for his work in “Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective Vol One.” PULP:The Art of Rob Davis is the first published collection of Davis’ remarkable work and contains 175 black and white pieces; all of which have appeared in the pages of various Airship 27 Productions books. The book features an Introduction by award-winning British writer I.A. Watson and Airship 27 Productions Editor-in-chief Ron Fortier provides a post-essay to round out the volume.

A unique book collecting the great “spot illustrations” of an award-winning illustrator By Bob Deis Writer Ron Fortier and artist Rob Davis already had impressive careers in the realm of comics when they decided to create their own publishing company, Airship 27, about ten years ago. If you’re a fan of comics and graphics novels, you probably know Fortier’s work from things like THE TERMINATOR and GREEN HORNET series, and you’ve seen artwork by Davis in various STAR TREK comics, the ROBYN OF SHERWOOD series and others. When Fortier and Davis launched Airship 27, they began to focus on publishing “New Pulp” novels, written by Ron and other talented writers and illuminated with "spot illustrations "drawn by Rob. The book PULP: THE ART OF ROB DAVIS collects his spot illustrations from many of the popular Airship 27 books, such as the award-winning SHERLOCK HOLMES – CONSULTING DETECTIVE series, BROTHER BONES, CAPTAIN HAZZARD and others. These illustrations are inspired by the classic black-and-white line drawings that were common in books and pulp magazines published in the first half of the 20th Century. And, as Fortier says in the text he wrote for the Davis book, spot illustrations are different from sequential comic art. They capture selected moments described in the book and provide a foundation for readers to use their own imaginations to envision other scenes. To my knowledge, PULP: THE ART OF ROB DAVIS is the first book to collect B&W spot illustrations by an artist working in the New Pulp genre and may be the first to collect such artwork from any genre. That makes it worthy of buying in itself. And, when you look through it, you’ll find that seeing the collected spot illustrations by Davis outside the context of the books they originally appeared in provides a unique viewing experience. It focuses your attention on how good such artwork can be in its own right – and on how good Davis is at it. That makes it a 5-star book to me. By the way, I bought the ebook version and found that the illustrations really pop beautifully on my iPad. Having purchased other Airship 27 books in print format, I’m sure the print edition also looks great.

By John Bodnar Rob's art always captures that special "moment in time" scene of a story. He has perfected his craft through the years and always amazes me in his depiction of the characters and their settings.
