Dr. Ross Shaheen, the developer of the software, is living the American dream. Between his internationally-recognized nuclear weapons research career at the prestigious Berkeley Lab and his picture-perfect family in the San Francisco suburbs, it's a good life that can only get better...until he is lured into lecturing before an elite group of scientists in the country of his birth: Iran. The seven thousand mile trip takes Shaheen back to the land of the lion and the sun, yet it also delivers to Iran's very doorstep an important American citizen with a Top Secret security clearance. It soon becomes clear what the Iranians are really after: the BLIND SCORPION. The coveted software is the key to advancing their clandestine nuclear weapons program without the rest of the world being able to prove its existence. Shaheen becomes entangled in a twisted web of espionage, corruption and survival, putting to the test not only his secret knowledge but also the very core of his allegiance to the land he now calls home. If he lives, Ross Shaheen could walk away a hero. The question is, for which country?

A Timely, Unputdownable Thriller By Claude Forthomme (Nougat) When I was approached by Mike Wells with the offer of a free ebook copy in exchange for an honest review, I couldn't resist, the premise was both exciting and incredibly timely now that a deal has just been reached with Iran on its nuclear program and, at the time of writing this review, has yet to be approved by Congress. I don't normally read thrillers (I'm more into literary fiction) but this one really delivers on its promise.Fast paced and suspenseful, it features a surprising range of highly likekable characters, in particular the sprightly and brilliant Dr. Shaheen, the Iranian-American scientist who is the hero of the story, and his beautiful Russian wife and their two teenage children, as well as his wife's father, lovable and grumpy General Pugachov. The latter has become friends with Colonel Nash, the steely Deputy Director of Operations at the CIA, both united in their fight against terrorism. Add to this gallery, the sexy TV reporter, the clever CIA agent and a range of unpleasant characters and villains, including the Iranian scientist who has developed the bomb and a violent Russian spy. What I liked the most, however, in this well-written spy thriller, was the depiction of Iran, how it is remembered by Dr. Shaheen who left it as a young man, and how he finds the country changed when he returns there now. This is a thoroughly well-researched book by a person in the know, including fascinating details about making an atomic bomb (no fear, there are not enough details to actually build one!). This aspect of the book is of course not best-selling author Mike Wells doing, it is the work of his college friend, an Iranian-American, Farsheed Ferdowsi who had originally published this book under the title "Mushroom in the Sand". I haven't read that earlier version of this book but I have no doubts that Mike Wells professional writing talent has a lot to do with the way this book looks now, re-edited with an enticing new title. If you visit Mike Wells' blog, you will get a description of how this book was born: he closely followed Ferdowsi, chapter by chapter as he wrote it and in the end, brought his editing talents to bear and now his marketing support. Small wonder Mr. Ferdowsi had no time for book promotion: he is a serial entrepreneur, creating a string of companies in the information technology industry, and he was recognized by the Nashville Business Journal as the "Entrepreneur of the Year" in 2002.

Truly, this cannot be better than his last series: Lust, Money and Murder?Dr Rosham "Ross" Shaheen has a brilliant mind, creator of a special program the Blind Scorpion, he can pioneered a system that can calculate the destruction a nuclear bomb might cause if activated. What interests me more is the depth of his knowledge (clearly the author has a passion in it) about nuclear reactions and how people can use it to destroy things. In addition to that, we have many big players in the book: MOIS, Mossad, US and Russia, all in it for various reasons. When Ross agreed to travel to Iran, he did so with high risk. He might never return home to see his family again, and even if he manages, his future will be uncertain. It is nerve- wrecking to see a man plagued by his morals and loyalty.Somehow, the big players are the one with nice toys, while Ross has to rely mostly on his given few and his own intelligence, which made the book gripping. Although he is not McGyver, but he proves that when there is a will there is a way.Generally, the story is strong, and the book is well researched. I read it for these two, although the characters are good, they are probably not going to be remembered as much as the story for me.Overall, this one might be a close second in my favourite collection for Mike Wells' series, mainly because I liked Elaine Brogan more as she can kick ass. You should try both books if you are into espionage and spying tricks.

Hill This small collection of stories is more than enough to get a feel for its author. Gavrish's prose is witty, intelligent, and at times caustically funny. The characters are memorable and the situations, even when bordering on the absurd, are thoroughly engaging. If you can't find something to appreciate in these short pieces, it's certainly not because there's nothing to be found. My only complaint about the book is that it wasn't longer. Looking forward to reading more of Gavrish's work in the near future!(FULL DISCLOSURE: I received a free copy of this e-book from the author in exchange for an honest review.)

Richard The Midwives On-Call continuity is about dedicated individuals who aid in bringing new lives into the world at a Melbourne hospital. It is the hero who is a midwife in this story, and while he is committed to his work, his social life is practically nonexistent. In the past, Ryan Matthews saw much too much death as an army medic, and he has let no one get close to him since he left the service. But when his compassionate nature will not let him abandon the wife of his friend who was killed in the line of duty, he has to make decisions that will greatly impact three lives. Susan Carlisle has created an extremely heartwarming romance packed with poignant conflicts and endearing characters. HIS BEST FRIEND’S BABY touches the reader with a wide range of affecting emotions. After losing her spouse in a war far away from her country, Australian Phoebe Taylor is in urgent need of support. She will be delivering a baby within weeks, but has no one to whom she can turn for assistance. Though she has never met Ryan Matthews, her husband had let her know the former army medic who fought alongside him could be counted on. Since he presently lives not too far from her, Phoebe reluctantly goes to visit him as it seems like her only choice. With her pregnancy so evident, his training as a current midwife at a Melbourne hospital has Ryan showing concern. Yet upon discovering Phoebe is the wife of his deceased good friend, his thoughts turn to how anything connected with the war is behind him. But as evidence of her determined nature keeps surfacing, easing her burdens becomes important to Ryan. As the two spend time together, he begins to get more and more immersed in her daily life. Though he had never wanted to have any serious feelings about another person, it is very difficult to resist the spunky mom-to-be.When a story has a character whose profession is not typical of their gender, it constantly results in interesting scenes. I really liked Ryan and how caring he was of any pregnant woman, proving he was much more than a helpful professional. Though his behavior when he first meets Phoebe is not the best, his guilt over his conduct forces him into action. How these two respond to each other from their second meeting on is often moving and certainly realistic. What has happened in their pasts frequently is the driving force behind any reactions, and I was often anxious about their final decisions.HIS BEST FRIEND’S BABY is a medical romance, and Susan Carlisle skillfully entwines these two categories to make a very rewarding story. I enjoyed anything having to do with her pregnancy and his career, while the romantic elements are engaging and kept me reading to learn more. Ryan and Phoebe are a couple who come across as definitely believable. Their inner feelings are often on display and let the reader know exactly what they are thinking at a certain moment, while their sexual desires are also expressed with lots of emotion. Both are strong-willed, and it was very fascinating to see their reactions during several frank discussions. There is even amusing humor sprinkled throughout the story to cause some chuckles. Susan Carlisle makes HIS BEST FRIEND’S BABY entertaining with an imaginative premise.Copy received from author for a CataRomance review - 4.5 Stars

No matter if you are the toughest soldier in the world , your best friend not being there will always hit you. So naturally ex-army medic Ryan Matthews uses his job of helping to bring new life into the world to escape the memories from the time he lost his best friend in Iraq. But when comes across his best friend's wife, alone and pregnant is whole world is turned upside down. It's the shocker he never saw coming and even worse he can't seem to stop himself from falling for her.He is torn between seeing his best friend alive again through the eyes of his child and finding love in the arms of the woman who belonged to his best friend. His Best Friend's Baby (Midwives On-Call #6)This was a truly heartbreaking read. I was just as torn as Ryan, I wanted him to find a way to move forward from his friend's death but I will admit it was a little creepy to think that he would be ending up with his best friend's woman, I mean personally I don't think I would be able to kiss someone knowing that once before they belonged to my best friend , who sadly is no longer there.Aside from that little annoying creepy feeling, I found this read really delightful. And after chapter 5 I was even able to get rid of the creepy feeling and see exactly what the author was getting at, the truly beautiful message of love can and will always be found in the least expected forms, of course it's going to feel wrong at first but it's lives way ( or in this case a friend from heaven) of telling us that it was meant to be and the person in heaven is the one that is no longer sad but happy.A truly beautiful and emotional read that will leave you breathless, heartbroken and truly in awe of the miracle of life and just exactly who wonderful things can sometimes work out if you dare to risk it all.5/5 star review" A new life, new hope , but with complications. Can they make it work?"** Copy provided in exchange for a honest review

Loved This One By Mrs. Helen Sibbritt This is a story that I loved from the first page Phoebe is pregnant and alone after her husband is killed in action she has no one and although strong and she has a good job as a primary school teacher as she is getting to the end of her pregnancy she needs someone and one of the last letters that she received from her husband was about his best friend Ryan Matthews who is now living in Melbourne and working as a midwife at the hospital that Phoebe is going to have her baby at. But Ryan has been through so much firstly growing up as a foster child in Texas and then his years in war zones he is not ready to be there for someone but as they get to slowly know each other the pull between them gets stronger. This really is such a beautiful and emotional story that will have you smiling as both Ryan and Phoebe open up to each other and see each other in a different light their journey to a HEA is one that will keep you up late it is a story that you will read in one sitting beautifully written with all of the characters so real and full of life. I am loving this Midwives On-Call series and I highly recommend this one to you don't miss it.

Why do you wear clothes?  Consider this: no other animal wears clothes and no one is born wearing clothes. So why and when did we start to wear clothes? Clothing was an early invention on our way to becoming human. And what a stroke of ingenuity. Wearing clothes empowered us to conquer the world.  What do clothes do for us? Certainly they protect us from bad weather and hazardous conditions. They keep us comfortable and safe. In their most basic usages, clothes are movable sanctuaries for the body.  But there is so much more. Clothes are your daily form of self-expression. They tell people who you are. Clothes boost your ego and boast your body, making you feel vital and attractive. Sexy clothes announce your personal desires. You are what you wear and clothing is a potent form of communication.  And what do you know about your clothes? Where did denim come from? Zippers? Gore-Tex? Stilettos? Bikinis? Did you know that the demand for clothes led to the Civil War, the Industrial Revolution, the Audubon Society, and tragedy in Bangladesh?  As Mark Twain said, "Naked people have little or no influence on society." Covering our body has enabled us to become who we are as modern humans. It's all about the clothes we wear...

Review "A wonderful read! The book is really well-written, informative, insightful, and witty (I'm running out of adjectives!)." -Glenn C. Conroy, PhD  Professor of Physical Anthropology  Washington University

Neufeld, PhD was, for 40 years, an ophthalmic pharmacologist on the medical school faculties of Yale University, Harvard University, Washington University in St. Louis, and Northwestern University. His laboratory did basic research on the causes and treatments of eye diseases. Dr. Neufeld has always been interested in what makes us human and how did we get to our current way of being. His previous book: Hair, The Long and the Short of It, takes readers on a heady romp through this uniquely human characteristic. When he realized that wearing clothes is a uniquely human behavior, he knew he had the subject for his next book. The author lives in New Hampshire where he has a home on Lake Winnipesaukee. Art enjoys family, friends, weaving, grilling, nonfiction books, the local lifestyle, and being outside any time of the year.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. okay follow-up By Kitty B. Enjoyed to get Xander's story in the beginning, which was drastically different from his brother's as described in the first book. His character was developed well. The convergence of their paths takes place in the last third of the book. Was a little surprised the author seemed to, for a lack of a better way to state it, downplay Gabriel as a strong male character in comparison to the brother. Would have preferred them to be more equal, especially since the first book writes him as such a budding new hero. Didn't sit really well with me. Otherwise the book was fair. Plot moved well, if a little too fast in some places...things lacked details here and there or large amounts of time passed. Shocked at the number of typographical errors and grammar mistakes. Not sure this was even proofread at all. Seems to be a bit of a rushed follow-up installment.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Imagine the last episode of the Sopranos By Peter L. Romaneski If it weren't material I have been following for decades, I'd give it one star. Even then, though, the shoddy treatment the material receives throughout most of this series is really terrible. Epic characters just parachute into the story out of nowhere, then either do nothing at all or get killed off with no one caring. When *every* character is some legendary warrior thing, then *every* character is the same and the titular embellishments don't matter. There are 12 characters in the book who are some kind of "king": broken king, three eyed king, eternity king, undying king, etc etc. Every character is unique just like every other character. In fact, at the end of the story almost nothing mattered. I have to assume that Games Workshop is just doing a universal reboot on the intellectual property and this was a slipshod way of wiping the slate.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. A huge disappointment.... By D. DeFazio To quote Dorothy Parker, “This is not a novel to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force.” I don’t blame Mr. Reynolds. He’s just a hired gun, doing exactly what Games Workshop wants done. His writing isn’t bad. The plotting and the entire concept is bad. There is no main character here. We follow one group of characters for 100 pages before they are killed—just 25% into the book. Then we switch viewpoints between what seems like a dozen characters, all of who are given only cursory development before they are killed. Because all the good guys are dead, the god Sigmar just shows up out of nowhere on page 396 of a 441 page book to do battle with the main villain Archeon. Talk about a deus ex machina. Just imagine how ripped off you’d feel if Frodo died before reaching Mount Doom and God suddenly showed up to fight Sauron. That’s exactly how the ending felt.Sigmar and Archeon exchange blows for two tedious chapters before the fight climaxes on a precipice over a swirling chaos void thingy. But I wasn’t worried that a GOD might FALL. Nor is it suspenseful to watch a GOD FIGHT.The battles, incidentally, are not remotely believable. The forces of chaos fight fanatically, even though they are not being paid. The evil armies have no apparent source of food, no medical support, and no supply chain. They march thousands of miles across the entire continent without ever losing morale or getting sick. In fact, their only reward is their own destruction. No living species, even aggressive ones, act this way. Even fire ants slow down and drink water. But the beastmen, ogres, trolls, daemons and whatnot just keep coming, logic be damned. The last several chapters are especially bad, reading like a summary of events rather than a story. Entire continents and civilizations are swept away in just a few paragraphs.Worst of all, nothing the heroes do makes a difference. They fail, not because of their tragic flaws, but because they are victims of a toy company wanting to reboot their miniatures line. It’s really a slap in the face to the readers who have invested thousands of hours of time in these characters. So “This is how the world ends, not with a bang, but whimper.”

8 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Very disappointed with blithe treatment of decades old fantasy material By C Spoiler alert! Very disappointed with blithe treatment of decades old fantasy material. Some excellent scenes, but mostly a hurry to reboot.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Random, abrupt, and beyond unrealistic By Kindle Customer I'm actually annoyed with how dumb this was. Both main characters are apparently bipolar, since they can't seem to make up their minds about anything they think/feel the entire time. They also both apparently INSTANTLY abandon reason and common sense to "fall in love at first sight," though there is next to no lead up to their instantaneous infatuation, no insight for the reader to follow how these 2 mentally got themselves to the level of emotional investment they did in a combined total of (presumably) roughly an hour of awkwardly flip-floppy interaction. Everything was described in choppy and rushed fashion, making it difficult to engage with the story. And quite possibly the most annoying, the female main character's name suddenly changes...she starts the story as "Elisa" but then suddenly she becomes "Jen." What?! How do you forget your protagonist's name? And the shift from first-person narration to third and back again made things even worse, I couldn't even finish this. The entire premise felt borrowed, disingenuous, and awkwardly executed.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. confusing By Amazon Customer I usually love Helen Coopers books, this one left me confused. Eliza orJen? Regina or Luce? Editing was a mess.....also very choppy with the storyline. ....

I can't easily summarize the plot because I don't know what the characters actual names are. It should come with a key.Elisa = Elisa Stock = Elisa Oliver = JenRegina = LuceDominic Taylor = Mr. VeranoWhat is Chapter 2? It's a chapter from another version and it has nothing to do with the rest of the book.Grammar and incorrect words throughout.I cannot recommend this book

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I wish I had paid better attention to the reviews By Carina I wish I had paid better attention to the reviews. I'm a teacher and bought this hoping it would be a good resource for my students to use on class projects. I wish I had saved my money! The pictures don't match the text which is more than just a little annoying. It's confusing for kids to read and makes it difficult for them to get anything out of it. On top of that, Kid Kongo needs to find a better editor/proofreader. There were so many grammatical errors that my fourth graders were laughing at them. There are so many really good books on cultures and countries out there. This is not one of them.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great Photographs By Daryl Lee Spiewak The beautifully made photos do not match the narrative of "fun facts". That is a little annoying, but may be OK for children, who are the primary audience. That goes for how the facts are presented too - short sentences that don't always flow within the paragraphs - so it could still use some editing.

Where are the fun facts for children?3. The text are not for children between 5 - 12, maybe for 10-14 years. It's very expensive for such a little booklet. It's not a book for me!!I was expecting much more for this price!

The King of Rock ’n’ Roll is born: The making of Elvis, behind the scenes   “Elvis who?” was photographer Alfred Wertheimer’s response when, in early 1956, an RCA Victor publicist asked him to photograph an up-and-coming crooner from Memphis. Little did Wertheimer know that this would be the job of his life: just 21 years old, Elvis Presley was—as we now know—about to become a legend.Trailing Presley like a shadow, Wertheimer took nearly 3,000 photographs of Presley that year, creating a penetrating portrait of a man poised on the brink of superstardom. Extraordinary in its intimacy and unparalleled in its scope, Wertheimer's Elvis project immortalized a young man in the very process of making history. Now available as a TASCHEN standard edition, Elvis and the Birth of Rock and Roll collects Wertheimer’s most remarkable Elvis shots from that magical year, along with a selection of his historic 1958 pictures of the star being shipped off to an army base in Germany. Each chapter is illustrated with a poster by Hatch Show Print, one of the oldest letterpress print shops in America, which created many early Elvis posters in the 1950s.   Text in English, French, and German

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I have only truly appreciated Elvis in later years. ... By Paul I have only truly appreciated Elvis in later years. Having grown up as he was achieving immortality, his achievements then approached pedestrianism in my eyes. But a backward look reveals his true musical talent and showmanship. These candid photos and the accompanying text are mesmerizing, and glorify his unassuming beauty and innocence at the beginning, before he was the King and life hit him full on. The large scale format approximates a gallery show, but can be viewed in privacy and at leisure. Mr. Wertheimer's story is just as appealing.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Epic! By JoannaK This is an EPIC book! All the important pictures are there--and the accompanying text is right on. The book captures a moment in time--and makes it forever stand still to visit and revisit. It blew me away. Elvis Presley and Alfred Wertheimer: Two unforgettable legends--larger than life. Highly recommended!

I literally have no idea how much they are worth, but I can only imagine. This book is a true gem. Not only if you are an Elvis fan of course, but if you want to see how rock-n-roll started and what that period was like in American pop culture. for a true Elvis fan like myself, this is yet another addition to a vast collection of "real" books, not gossipy, money making entities that so many of his so called "friends" wrote. I'm so glad that Mr Murray took the time and care that subjects such as Elvis and Mr. Wertheimer truly deserved. My only regret is that neither are with us to see it.And remember..."Whether you're black or white, country or redneck, Elvis Presley will always be The King of Rock-n-Roll"

This remarkable book offer a rare journey through China's rugged, hinterland regions of Qinghai, Gansu, Sichuan, Yunnan, and Xinjiang. Truly a must-read book for the ultimate in Asia adventure travel, author Chris Lin takes the reader on an unforgettable journey of a lifetime into some of China's most fascinating and little-seen places, also following in the footsteps of Western explorers: colorful and controversial figures such as Sven Hedin, Alexandria David-Neel, Nikolai Przhevalsky, Francis Younghusband, Marc Aurel Stein, Heinrich Handel-Mazzetti, Frank Kingdon-Ward, Joseph Rock, and Owen Lattimore, among many others, whose numerous travels and exploits helped shape how this region captured the attention of the Western world. However, as Lin shows, many of the remote areas in China have to this day remained little touched by humans, including the Chinese themselves. Thus, the mystery and charm of these regions remain. Searching for Shambhalla represents the ultimate mix of history and adventure in this splendid, intimate journey along rugged caravan roads, trade routes, and sacred journeys of centuries past.

I've read in the past some relevant books about Shambhala but most of them are either tourist oriented or simply lack the richness and depth about its history, spirituality and geography. This book is unique in many ways but its striking value is its function to fill a vacancy caused by the cultural and language differences between the Chinese and western readers. As far as I know, very few Chinese are familiar with the early explorations by the western pioneers such as Sven Hedin, Joseph Rock or Owen Lattimore, while on the other side, very few western readers have the ability to gain access to the Chinese literatures on this subject. I know of no other Chinese writers who can match Chris' artful command of the English language and his familiarity with the early exploration history of the Chinese Far West. His style is uncomplicated, fluid yet dense and packed with information. It is captive and demands your attention, and one can be easily sucked in from reading the first page. The reading becomes an immersive experience, as Chris followed and witnessed the footsteps left by the early western explorers. This makes it possible for the readers to savor, appreciate and relive the stories told in books written in the late 19's century or early 20's century such as Central Asia by Sven Hedin, or Seeking the Mountains of Mystery by Joseph Rock. Last but not the least I should say Chris' book ties the history with his own experience in an entertaining way that I felt I was on the same journey along with him. It's a magical journey that enlightened me.

With author's real experience of these fascinated areas, I am attracted to go although I have been pilgrimed many holy mountains in Tibet. It is a valuable book to help us knowing about real Tibetan natural environment and culture.

Some vivid accounts of the life of Tibetan and other minorities now living there, combined with plenty of citations from diaries of some the early western explorers, making reading this book an enjoyable experience.

The Avenue, by James Lawless

Review ReviewEdit''As much a critique of social ills and suburban decay as a tale of community angst in the areas left behind by the boom, this is a powerful, emotive work from Dublin-born author James Lawless, who has been shortlisted for a Hennessy and WOW award. With a seamless narrative and engaging, pacy plot, this book comes recommended."Julian Fleming in The Sunday Business Post

From the Author The Genesis of The Avenue The Avenue represents my response to the myth of suburbia as a panacea for the ills of society. The story hangs essentially as a picture of suburban degeneration. My family like a lot of others moved from inner city to the suburbs for the 'open space and fresh air'(I had asthma as a child). However, in moving we unwittingly left behind a world with a strong community spirit for an anonymous sprawl where social interaction was at a minimum. The open spaces soon filled in as houses and the population increased, cars multiplied and the former inner-city congestion, from which people had previously fled, was now itself an intrinsic element of a suburban/city commuting lifestyle. But little heed was paid to the social changes that followed: the permanent traffic jams, the noise, the former city communities ripped apart to make highways to facilitate the suburban commuters, the two parent incomes, the latch-key children, the new landscape of industrial debris, used condoms, cider bottles, lager cans and of course the lethal drug culture. All the time the scream was bursting through the spreading graffiti on suburban walls. But the powers that be refused to hear. The novel is not all gloom however. Although it may be read as I have said as a picture of suburban degeneration, it is paralleled, despite the calamities, by a story of human regeneration, particularly in the characters of Francis and Michael and even  - almost contradictorily  -  Francis' father. My intention was to use the avenue as a trawling device to pierce the anonymity of a waste land. I perceive the avenue almost as one would a country village, small inward-looking with its hidden past and secrets, a crucible if you like in which the characters live entrapped lives and as a consequence (consciously or otherwise) are almost incestuously interlinked. Or to put it in the words of Francis' old cottage neighbour, Mrs Dempsey: 'The avenue cared for her own.'

From the Back Cover A scantily-dressed girl dancing in a lighted window jolts Francis Copeland from his world of books. Who are the real parents of the street kid Freddy? Who was the neighbour whose car killed Francis' mother when Francis was twelve years old? Raw suburban truths are exposed as Francis, with the help of the local children, slowly unravels the secrets of the avenue.     'James Lawless has a mighty thoughtful and penetrating capacity to make you gasp and rage and then burst out laughing: wheels within wheels, circles within circles, this book is very good.' Jennifer Johnston.   'A work of passion and truth, which captures a moment of painful transition in the national story. If a multicultural England has drawn a map of itself in Brick Lane, so has a postmodern Ireland traced its past and present in The Avenue. James Lawless has revealed with indignation and art, yet another Hidden Ireland beyond the imaginings of our ancestors.'             Declan Kiberd.   'As much a critique of social ills and suburban decay as a tale of community angst in the areas left behind by the boom... this book comes recommended.'             Julian Fleming, Sunday Business Post.   'It was pretty page-turning and struck me as a much better portrayal of Irish life in transition from traditional to modern than many a more self-consciously reminiscent tale.' Roslyn Fuller, Metro Éireann.

City or Suburb Life Makes Little Difference By Marc Stern In James Lawless' "The Avenue," the differences in the mores between city and suburban life are explored through the use of weak men and strong women. The poor pathetic hero of the piece, library Francis Copeland, is haunted by a virago of a wife who was once a temptress but is now a shadow of herself, sunken into meanness by her own shrewish ness. She and her friend Myrtle are constantly on the poor schlep who is also the "hero" of the piece. His only escape is books and stories and to get away from the woman who is now making his life a misery he reads incessantly, often living in the worlds inside his head. How different the city and the suburbs with their trees and open windows and young women, the husband think as he views a young women getting ready for a date or bed or something. She's not dressed in much and our tortured husband finds that he has to live in the land of his mind again, just to get away. That, perhaps most of all, in this beautifully written book, shows that while folks believe that the suburbs and suburban life, where the husband and wife end up, aren't much different than city life. It's just that the yards are bigger.

Suburban Malaise in Ireland By AD Simmons "The Avenue" is a book that could have been written about any suburban area in any country in the entire world. Francis is a man in a marriage gone cold is expertly depicted by Lawless. The wife and the friend will remind many of the readers of people they already know.Francis has a good rapport with the kids but when one dies things get really interesting. He doesn't have children of his own and has lived his life a la "Walter Mitty". His fantasy world is a distraction for the dull realities of his life. The most important thing to take away from this novel is that there really is not a "utopia", a place that is free from the social ills that happen in the world. It doesn't matter where the community lies ugly things will happen. The beauty of the book is that it is a testament to the human spirit triumphing over the human condition. While this is set in Ireland it can be transposed onto any suburban landscape. The accuracy with which the author captures the conditions of life in the midst of the storms is terrifying. This is definitely a must read.

James Lawless is a flawless writer that finds his home in Ireland. This alone impacts his writing enough to make all of his books very interesting reads.Great look...like his other books, The Avenue is clean, professionally edited and proof read, for an enjoyable reading experience.Francis Copeland is the main character in this particular book, a librarian who finds himself resigned to a life in a unhappy and childless marriage. Over the years his wife has become more and more withdrawn, almost seeming heartless. Reading stories and books is the avenue he uses to escape his miserable life...Great read, great price!

Afloat & Afoot is a celebration of John Burroughs, a Catskills native famous for his writings on the natural world that surrounds us all. This first-ever audio edition of his work includes a recounting of Burroughs' impromptu voyage down the Pepacton (now an important water source for New York City) and a recollection of his expedition to the top of Slide Mountain, the region's highest peak.

Burroughs' words are given new life by narrators Brett Barry and Rolland Smith, and his essays are followed by conversations with Burroughs experts Diane Galusha and Bill Birns. Listen to Burroughs, then hear why his work is as relevant now as it was in his time.

We played it in our car as we were driving through the Catskills and Brett Barry is a perfect narrator who captures the time and place with his rich baritone while never putting you to sleep! He has also interviewed a cast of characters who add interesting and unknown details about the life of this remarkable man. I thought I knew a lot about Burroughs, but this audio really captured the man and his work in an entirely new and fresh way. Loved it!!

I am fortunate to have a home in the Catskills and the beauty of these mountains never ceases to awe me. So to hear Burrough's words come to life is a thrill. Though much has changed, much of the wildness that Burrough's describes still exists. Like our great American naturalists his words are as relevant now as they were a century ago. If you don't know Burrough's ( and you should) these CDs are a great introduction. I'm also pleased to learn that one of the narrators, Brett Barry, has produced a driving tour of Rte 28 in the Catskills. History and folklore. I'm looking forward to taking that trip. Lovely listening experience. Recommended

By skk This is CD set is a fantastic companion for car rides through the pines of the Catskill Mountains. Nearly 150 years later, Burroughs still resonates. This is a great presentation of his voice.
