Even then, though, the shoddy treatment the material receives throughout most of this series is really terrible. Epic characters just parachute into the story out of nowhere, then either do nothing at all or get killed off with no one caring. When *every* character is some legendary warrior thing, then *every* character is the same and the titular embellishments don't matter. There are 12 characters in the book who are some kind of "king": broken king, three eyed king, eternity king, undying king, etc etc. Every character is unique just like every other character. In fact, at the end of the story almost nothing mattered. I have to assume that Games Workshop is just doing a universal reboot on the intellectual property and this was a slipshod way of wiping the slate.

It should be thrown with great force.” I don’t blame Mr. Reynolds. He’s just a hired gun, doing exactly what Games Workshop wants done. His writing isn’t bad. The plotting and the entire concept is bad. There is no main character here. We follow one group of characters for 100 pages before they are killed—just 25% into the book. Then we switch viewpoints between what seems like a dozen characters, all of who are given only cursory development before they are killed. Because all the good guys are dead, the god Sigmar just shows up out of nowhere on page 396 of a 441 page book to do battle with the main villain Archeon. Talk about a deus ex machina. Just imagine how ripped off you’d feel if Frodo died before reaching Mount Doom and God suddenly showed up to fight Sauron. That’s exactly how the ending felt.Sigmar and Archeon exchange blows for two tedious chapters before the fight climaxes on a precipice over a swirling chaos void thingy. But I wasn’t worried that a GOD might FALL. Nor is it suspenseful to watch a GOD FIGHT.The battles, incidentally, are not remotely believable. The forces of chaos fight fanatically, even though they are not being paid. The evil armies have no apparent source of food, no medical support, and no supply chain. They march thousands of miles across the entire continent without ever losing morale or getting sick. In fact, their only reward is their own destruction. No living species, even aggressive ones, act this way. Even fire ants slow down and drink water. But the beastmen, ogres, trolls, daemons and whatnot just keep coming, logic be damned. The last several chapters are especially bad, reading like a summary of events rather than a story. Entire continents and civilizations are swept away in just a few paragraphs.Worst of all, nothing the heroes do makes a difference. They fail, not because of their tragic flaws, but because they are victims of a toy company wanting to reboot their miniatures line. It’s really a slap in the face to the readers who have invested thousands of hours of time in these characters. So “This is how the world ends, not with a bang, but whimper.”
