1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This is a wonderfu resource By Beverly Clark I am planning on taking my granddaughter to the Art Institute in Chicago later this month. She is in second grade and I wanted a book to use as a pre-trip guide for her. As a retired school teacher, this is a book that I would have loved to have had in my classroom. It is easy to use and the author did a great job organizing the material.I can use this book as a guide for my granddaughter to prepare her for our excursion and also have a great reference book that I can enjoy afterwards. I'm very pleased with this purchase.

This book provides an overview to the history of art with some excellent examples.The book provides loads of useful information and teaches you enough about the different styles of art to appreciate them more. I read this recently before going to a gallery with some friends who are all Art students and know far more about what they are looking at than me every time we go. I found that due to reading this book I was able to for the first time keep up and actually add to the conversations far more than I was before.

Dissapointing at best as I was hoping for in depth descriptions of art and artist from each era mentioned. Chronologically, it begins with the renaissance but completely skips the boroque period and jumps right into impressionism. It also only briefly skims over a few different methods of producing art i.e silverpoint, painting, architecture with only a paragraph or two on each. Not for anyone looking to have a real working knowledge of how western art has evolved over the centuries.
