A darkly comic debut novel, a hilariously told story of love, attachment, anxiety, and nerd culture.
Easy Hardwick has it made. At just about thirty, she’s got a tumbledown cottage in small-town Oregon and an uncomplicated acting gig as the space-babe eye candy on a sci-fi parody show. She spends her downtime online, bickering with fans and fellow culture vultures about film trivia and relishing her minor-but-satisfying celebrity.
Enter Harrison. What begins as a jocular online flirtation spills into a messy IRL affair, and Easy finds herself pregnant with twins and sharing her home with the love of her life…plus the teenage daughter, baby son, and slightly unhinged, soon-to-be-ex wife she kind of didn’t totally know he had.
Easy may play a space ditz in hot-pants on TV, but her voice is restlessly intelligent, negotiating the absurdities of a world lived onscreen and online and striving to make sense of heady problems: love affairs, ex-wives, teen girls, eating disorders, and whether cannibalistic flies count as zombies. Like the captive great white shark that sets Easy’s story in motion, Nadine Darling’s writing has got teeth. Her pointed, precise dialogue, empathetic insights, and live-wire observations elevate this novel from zany domestic drama to outlandish comic masterpiece. She Came From Beyond! is an audacious, fresh debut from a writer to watch.

Review “Nadine Darling’s SHE CAME FROM BEYOND! is a muscle of a novel. Don’t be fooled by the title or by the narrator’s couldn’t-care-less attitude. This beast of a book―sometimes about motherhood and daughterhood, always about the all-round strangeness of family―is coming straight for your heart.” (Hannah Pittard, author of Reunion and The Fates Will Find Their Way)“What could be more fantastical and hard-to-believe than a book described as a ‘comic novel’ that turns out to actually be very funny. But She Came From Beyond! is exactly that. I was unable to type the letters ‘LOL’ because I was too busy laughing out loud. It's also an involving story that brings together the important things in life―love, romance, family, parenthood, and obscure pop culture references. I recommend everybody read it in the not too distant future or sooner.” (Frank Conniff, writer and actor, Mystery Science Theater 3000)“While the circumstances around Easy spin wildly out of control, it's her grounded-yet-comical narration that makes the book stand out. Her snarky asides and darkly funny quips will make readers laugh out loud, even in the face of death, divorce, mental illness, and heartbreak. Darling crafts a debut novel that's truly like nothing else. Unexpected comedy and an unusual plot make this a weirdly delightful read.” (Kirkus)“Newcomer Nadine Darling drops an unforgettable stylistic beat from page one and continues upping the stakes thereafter. She Came From Beyond! is a hilariously touching ode to nerds and our culture, but more importantly, it’s an honest and heartfelt tribute to the always eccentric human condition.” (Internationally bestselling author Lyndsay Faye who got every nerd reference in this book and watches way too much Star Trek, and wrote the Edgar-nominated Timothy Wilde trilogy)“Early in Nadine Darling’s She Came From Beyond!, protagonist Easy Hardwick says she feels like ‘the star of a house fire.’ She’s not wrong, and she doesn’t come out unscathed, but she is one heck of a star, house fire or not. Dramatic, selfish yet genuine, and funny, really funny, Easy will carry you through the wildest book I’ve read in years.” (Sarah Blake, author of Mr. West)“Darling entertains with a dry, witty humor that results in an amusing and zany romp.” (Booklist)“Wild romp of a novel...I can’t tell you how much I’m enjoying this novel so far and Nadine Darling’s style is something fresh, original, and so much fun.” (Lithub)“Nadine Darling has written something so original―the words picaresque, macabre, quirky, farcical and wacky come to mind―that she can be said to have invented a genre that we should call Comic Confessional as Alternative to Suicide. Five stars. (I never say that.)” (Joe Bob Briggs)
About the Author Nadine Darling's short fiction has appeared in Night Train, Edifice Wrecked, Eyeshot, SmokeLong Quarterly, and Per Contra. She lives in Boston with her family.

SharpJr The first time I ever read a piece by Nadine Darling was in an online writing workshop we both belonged to. People would post stories, and other people would critique them. There were many good writers there, posting stories and discussing craft, as we all tried to be the next Updike or McCarthy or Oates but were, really, just hoping to get into Glimmertrain. And there were many very good writers who have had some level of literary success. Then one day I read a story by Nadine. I don't remember what it was about, I only knew one thing. This girl could write. When I got to the end, someone could have dropped a mic, if mic dropping had been a thing a decade ago. That was that. To paraphrase John Landau, I had seen the future of writing and it was Nadine Darling. So this wonderful book is no surprise, it's more like my personal Christmas morning after sitting on Santa's lap on Black Friday and asking only for Nadine to write a goddam book already. Extra bonus: mine came with an inscription. Those of you who are here looking for a well considered, thoughtful, unbiased review of She Came From Beyond, may just as well go check your Facebook. But just because you know I love her doesn't mean I'm wrong.I could tell you it's funny, and that the cultural references were fun as hell. I could tell you that the characters were well drawn and that the themes were poignant .I could tell you that she has a particular knack for ending chapters beautifully. But the thing I want to discuss is language. Word choice. When you read her prose it feels so effortless, like she just sat on her sofa in her pajamas and dictated into an iPhone while munching Nacho Cheese Bugles. But if you've ever tried to write, you know that selecting the exactly correct word is hard work. Not like riveting I-beams in skyscrapers type hard work, but hard writing work. I found myself noticing the perfect word choices and wondering what lesser writers would have chosen. But I'm kinda geeky that way.She Came From Beyond is a beautifully cast, beautifully worded, beautifully resolved, gem of a book. Nadine didn't grace our little workshop with many stories. Our loss. I'm only glad I get to pay her to read her stuff. She deserves it.

Ross Sometimes I pick up a book and within the first fifty pages it's immediately obvious that it's a first novel. In some cases that's because it's terrible, but thankfully that's not the case with this debut. Rather, here, I felt that way because the writing has such a strong particular voice that is almost brash -- it's the kind of cocky style that seems to get rather overpraised when it's by a young make writer. The other thing that seemed to point at first novelhood is that although voice and character were very strong, there's not a lot of plot or story going on, more of a situation. The situation is that there's a 30ish woman who appears on a Mystery Science Theater 3000-type show based in a fictionalized version of Medford, Oregon. She gets involved with a dude she meets in online pop culture forums, complications ensue -- some wacky, some not. I was totally sucked into the domestic dramas, as well as the flashbacks to the woman's childhood as the adopted daughter of two gay men in San Francisco. Partially because of the situations, but mostly because of the brisk pace and rat-a-tat sharply funny dialogue. There's some deeper stuff in here about motherhood, stepmotherhood, living with mentally ill family, and more. However, in many scenes, the book reads like a Hepburn/Tracy screwball comedy -- in a good way. It's a very good debut -- one that makes me eager to see if the author can bring her distinctive voice to something with a little more plot and depth, to get to something really great.

For the Old Low Budget Syfi Obsessed Only By Tetra I now see why I was able to buy this book for $1...while the analogies were often unique and entertaining they couldn't save this book from being a waste of time. The premise was boring and passive aggressive to say the least. Unless you have an obsession with old low budget science fiction films and depressed narratives that make you want to wash your hands after, it's better to just skip reading this book.
