2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I love this novella By Antonia Moore I love this novella. From the darkness in oneself to the darkness in others, it's a small book with big ideas. Using rich metaphor and beautiful characterization to help confront themes like mortality, guilt, love and despair, the genre of noir gets elevated to the level of literary fiction in this author's work.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. no space/time is wasted on any page of this book By Charles Piedmont this story has so much more going on than i'm capable of discerning but that didn't make it any less enjoyable.williams is extremely efficient with words. every line of dialogue, every environmental description, every word on every page serves a specific purpose. whether it's setting the off-putting tone of a scene, establishing these particularly unstable characters or building forward momentum, no space/time is wasted on any page of this book. the writing style can be challenging at times, but never alienating. it holds your attention and forces you to consider whether or not you can really be sure the events unfolding are real or imagined by frances, the protagonist.early on it seems we can (mostly) presume what's going to happen by the end of the story but you don't keep reading to simply confirm your suspicions, but because you never really get to feel certain of what's transpiring and you want to know what's around the corner. there's a good deal of imagery - some religious, some clearly personal, some not as easily summed up - that adds a lot of depth to the characters/plot points/etc, but the subtext isn't the focus. it's just an engaging, well-paced story with interesting characters that keeps you entertained throughout.
