The humble sketch is the foundation of great art, where thoughts and concepts first come to life as an image—but rarely are sketches celebrated like they deserve to be for their power to explore, inspire, and entertain. In Sketching from the Imagination: Sci-fi, a selection of fifty talented traditional and digital artists, ranging from industry legends to talented up-and-comers, have been chosen to share their sketches and reveal the ideas, inspirations, and techniques behind their creative processes.

Continuing the high-quality format of 3dtotal Publishing's previous successes, Sketching from the Imagination: An Insight into Creative Drawing and Sketching from the Imagination: Fantasy, this new title is dedicated to fantasy's sibling genre, sci-fi, in all its forms. From doodles of robots and aliens to concept designs for spaceships and speculative life-forms, including rendered drawings of invented worlds, Sketching from the Imagination: Sci-fi presents a handpicked collection of the best sketches and drawings by sci-fi artists from across the globe—each with their own unique style and approach to the genre.

Each artist presents an impressive showcase of images from their sketchbooks, accompanied by their own enlightening commentary, and page upon page of useful tips, techniques, creative insights, and invaluable advice for getting your ideas out of your brain and onto the page. Sketching from the Imagination: Sci-fi is not only a must-have resource for any concept designer's shelf, but a stunning compilation of drawings that will delight sci-fi fans and any admirer of beautiful artwork.

By Parka [[VIDEOID:ac65e3b55d9c7ae5fa68eb10d7cd004b]]This is the third book from the Sketching from the Imagination series published by 3dtotal Publishing. I love all three of them and I hope they keep coming up with more volumes. The book is still satisfyingly thick at 320 pages. 50 artists are featured. The sketches and artworks are really beautiful and inspiring. There's a lot of variety and the artists commentary talks about their love for sketching, inspiration and some tips. Even in black and white, the designs look terrific. Once again, I'm marvelled by the level of details and intricacy of the many sketches. This particular volume focuses on sci-fi. I still see quite a significant portion on character designs, in sci-fi style of course. There are also the occasional mechas, sci-fi environments, alien plants, etc. Most highly recommended to all who loves sketchbooks.Well worth the money!(See more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

Excellent collection of science fiction work By Bees Totally disagree with the bio-bizarre review... sounds like a really narrow idea of what sci-fi is. It's science fiction - which is much more than mechs and transformers. This book is so enjoyable, and represents a nicely curated and varied sampling of the genre. The wide range of techniques and approaches combined with the personal writing is fantastic. These sketching from the imagination books are easily among my favorites.

This isn't a book to teach you how to draw, it's a book that inspires you to create By Amazon Customer After falling in love with the Sketching From The Imagination, I was thrilled to find the new Sci-Fi and Fantasy books and they do not disappoint. The Sci-Fi book is filled with some great art and some truly unique styles. There is a great mix of concepts from alien life forms, to spaceships, robots, mechs, spacesuits, and other wild future imaginings. The art alone is worth it. But when you add in the comments and tips from each artist, it really makes this (and the other books in this series) a great place for inspiration and for picking up new ideas and techniques. Of all my art books, the Sketching from the Imagination books are the ones I pick up most often. I love to just flip thru them at random and almost always find myself pulled in and losing track of time.I recommend these books for anyone whether you are a beginner or an expert or even if you don't draw. These books aren't books that teach you how to draw, they are books that inspire you to create. So if you want to stir your imagination, or peak behind the curtains and get inside the head of some talented artists, or just enjoy some excellent and sometimes quirky Sci-Fi art, then flip through the pages of this wonderful book. I dare you not to feel inspired to grab a pen or pencil and start some sketches of your own.

*Includes pictures *Includes accounts of the major battles of the Scottish Wars of Independence *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents “A false usurper sinks in every foe And liberty returns with every blow.” – Blind Harry From their very beginnings, England and Scotland fought each other. Emerging as unified nations from the early medieval period, their shared border and inter-related aristocracy created endless causes of conflict, from local raiders known as border reivers to full blown wars between their monarchies. Every century from the 11th to the 16th was colored by such violence, and there were periods when not a decade went by without some act of violence marring the peace. Out of all of this, the most bitterly remembered conflict is Edward I's invasion during the late 13th century. After Edward’s death, the English were eventually beaten back at the famous Battle of Bannockburn in 1314, and thus the early 14th century was a period featuring some of Scotland's greatest national heroes, including William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. It still resonates in the Scottish national memory, all the more so following its memorable but wildly inaccurate depiction in the 1995 film Braveheart, which had Scottish audiences cheering in cinemas. William Wallace is one of the most famous freedom fighters in history, and over 700 years after his death he is still remembered as Scotland’s beloved hero. But while the movie Braveheart helped make him a household name, and he is commemorated across Scotland as a natural leader and a loyal son of his homeland, he is also “the most mysterious of the leaders of the Scottish resistance to Edward I.” This is because, paradoxically, the very famous soldier is also one of the least well known. In fact, the mystery surrounding Wallace is figuring out precisely, or even vaguely, who he was. Where did this champion of Scottish independence come from? Who was his family? What did he do before emerging from obscurity with the brutal murder of William Heselrig, the English sheriff of Lanark, in May 1297? So little evidence on Wallace’s life exists that answering even the most basic questions about him can be a challenge. Piecing together the story of William Wallace’s life is an exercise in asking more questions than can be answered, and often in looking at just as much conjecture as proof. This book attempts to separate fact from fiction while looking at the life and fighting of the man who inspired Braveheart. Though it’s often forgotten today, Robert the Bruce was a bit shiftier, if only out of necessity. Robert the Bruce has become a figure of Scottish national legend, renowned as the man who threw off the shackles of English oppression, but prior to 1306, this Anglo-Scottish nobleman did little to cover himself in glory or to earn a reputation as a hero of the national cause. A member of one of Scotland's leading noble families, Bruce inherited his grandfather's claim to the right to be King of the Scots. That older Bruce had been one of the two leading competitors in the Great Cause, and the family still held ambitions toward the throne. They also held resentments dating back to that disputed inheritance against the Balliol clan and their supporters the Comyns. Of course, this was all forgiven and forgotten after Bannockburn and Bruce’s rise to the Scottish throne, which he held for over two decades. This book analyzes the lives of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about the two Scottish heroes like never before.

It's disappointing that so much is unknown and the author, as well as the readers, are forced to guess or assume on so much of Wallace's life and, to a lesser degree, Robert the Bruce. I happily endorse this quick, interesting read.

THANK YOU PUBLISHER. I thought I would have to track it down in a university library but there it was! $8 and 30 seconds later I had it. Unbelievable. They can't sell many of these. The book is a reminiscence of his time in confinement on Ventotene in the early '40s. Many intimate portraits of his fellow, often famous, prisoners. It's wonderful how the digital age makes what would be obscure books available to anyone. Still, someone has to do it so I thank the publishers again for doing it.

Jerome “Hoosier” Elliott is the President of the Night Horde SoCal. He has worn a patch for many years, and he’s led his club, and his family, through times of strength and times of struggle. For most of those years, his old lady, Bedelia Beth—“Bibi” to those who know and love her—has stood by his side. Club life has had its challenges, some almost insurmountable, but they have made each other strong and waited for each other always. Together, they made the club a family. After club violence tears them apart, Hoosier needs Bibi to find him and bring him back. The way to their future is their past: the story of the life they’ve made together, and the dreams they’ve dared to make come true. Note: explicit sex and violence

Hoosier and Bibi are the perfect couple - a couple that has been through hell, more than once, but they always come through it - together."She stayed with him. She would always stay with him."Hooj and Bibi's past and present had me hooked to my kindle - I felt so many emotions through their story, mainly, I felt the love they shared, and it was beautiful. Honestly, I can't really put into words how much I loved this story... I highly recommend it

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. BEAUTIFUL!! By Suzanne Absolutely devoured this in one sitting! This is Hoosier, Jerome Andrew Elliott, the president of the Night Horde SoCal MC and Bibi, Bedelia Beth Ladue, his old lady and mother to all tale. This story takes place in both the present and the past as Bibi fights to bring Hooj back to those who love him. Their story starts with Hoosier in hospital still recovering from the fire. He’s awake but he can’t speak, he’s learning to walk and has to develop his motor skills and he only recognizes Bibi. The doctors fear due to his age and his injuries, if he doesn’t start communicating soon, he will be lost to them. So Bibi tells him their story to “Lead him back to the present.” And so it begins…”You know what. Darlin’ I am goin’ to tell you a story today. It’s the best story I know.”This is a story of the strength of love and endurance of a relationship through the good, the bad and the ugly. Hooj and Bibi have a 42 year marriage that has seen and endured it all. I can’t tell you how each Fanetti novel I read seems like my favourite at the time because of how well Ms. Fanetti evokes the voices, the hearts and the minds of her characters.Living through the eyes of Hoosier and Bibi was emotional and also absolutely inspiring. It truly demonstrates that even through the tears, the blood, the scars –physical and mental – setbacks and heart ache, true love can persevere. The human heart, mind and spirit is a formidable foe and with its soul mate at its side, it will not be broken or shaken no matter what.Another awesome read from Ms. Fanetti!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Kleenix worthy story of True Love! By Suzi (Obsessive Reading Disorder) Absolutely loved this one! Bibi and Hooj have been the strength for everyone in the MC for so long. They have a strong sense of family and take care of their own. I was so excited to read their love story. This one has humor, sorrow and so much true love. Keep your kleenix handy. No spoilers but you will need to read at least the book prior to this one before you dive in.I love how this author is able to take us right to the edge of such strong emotions and then carry us back to a safe place again. Not just once, but multiple times during the story. I find myself reluctant to write reviews on these books. I don't want to share any of those feels I get! I recommend starting from the beginning with book 1 and then going forward from there.

My eyes hurt from all of the eye rolling moments induced by bad grammar, poor plot, an immature character I could not root for, and an unrealistic ending wrapped up so poorly and so fast it must have been past the poor authors bedtime.

Institutes in its first form was not merely an exposition of Reformation doctrine; it proved the inspiration to a new form of Christian life for many. It is indebted to Martin Luther in the treatment of faith and sacraments, to Martin Bucer in what is said of divine will and predestination, and to the later scholastics for teaching involving unsuspected implications of freedom in the relation of church and state. The book is prefaced by a letter to Francis I. As this letter shows, Institutes was composed, or at least completed, to meet a present necessity, to correct an aspersion on Calvin's fellow reformers. The French king, wishing to suppress the Reformation at home, yet unwilling to alienate the reforming princes of Germany, had sought to confound the teachings of the French reformers with the attacks of Anabaptists on civil authority. “My reasons for publishing the Institutes,” Calvin wrote in 1557, “were first that I might vindicate from unjust affront my brethren whose death was precious in the sight of the Lord, and next that some sorrow and anxiety should move foreign people, since the same sufferings threaten many.” “The hinges on which our controversy turns,” says Calvin in his letter to the king, “are that the Church may exist without any apparent form” and that its marks are “pure preaching of the word of God and rightful administration of the sacraments.” The opening chapter of the Institutes is perhaps the best known, in which Calvin presents the basic plan of the book. There are two general subjects to be examined: the creator and his creatures. Above all, the book concerns the knowledge of God the Creator, but “as it is in the creation of man that the divine perfections are best displayed,” there is also an examination of what can be known about humankind. After all, it is mankind's knowledge of God and of what He requires of his creatures that is the primary issue of concern for a book of theology. In the first chapter, these two issues are considered together to show what God has to do with mankind (and other creatures) and, especially, how knowing God is connected with human knowledge.

Classic theology - Classic literature By Douglas VanderMeulen John Calvin's Institutes of the Christian Religion is a monumental work that stands among the greatest works of Christian theology and Western literature. It ranks with works such as St. Augustine's Confessions and City of God in value, insight and significance. The Institutes have molded the church's understanding of Christian doctrine for generations and has had untold influence in the development of Western thought in both the religious and civil arenas.Calvin's Institutes represent his life work in teaching theology. They first appeared in 1536 and went through three significant revisions - each expanding and building upon the previous. This particular edition represents the final form and of which Calvin was very pleased.Originally written to give basic understanding of Christian doctrine, they became one of the earliest systematic theologies of the Reformed tradition. Calvin's stated desire is to give the reader the necessary background to read and accurately handle the great doctrines and promises of the Bible.Calvin sent a copy to the King Francis I to encourage him to stop persecuting the Christians who were embracing the gospel as taught by the Reformers. His basic argument was that if the king understood what these people believed he would stop killing them as heretics but rather see them as faithful adherents of historical Christianity. Calvin was no lover of novelty and throughout the Institutes copiously cites from the early church fathers and the long history of the Church's understanding of doctrine. This two-volume work is broken down into four books that loosely follow the outline of the Apostle's Creed. Book 1 concerns knowledge of God. Book 2 is about Jesus Christ as redeemer. Book 3 is about the Holy Spirit's role in applying Christ's redeeming graces. Book 4 is about the church and practice. This particular edition, translated by Battles and edited by McNeil is more expensive than the one produce by Beverage, but it is worth every extra dollar you spend. While the church is indebted to Beverage for his labor of love in getting many works by Calvin translated into English, his command of both French and Latin were not as strong as Battles. They were originally produced in both Latin and French and Battles' work demonstrates his competency in dealing with both languages. Also, Battles' mastery of Calvin's other writings is reflected in his voluminous footnotes, many of them very helpful to the reader for clarifying, further reading and cross-referencing. In addition, the indexes in the Battles edition are invaluable not only for searching the Institutes for topics but for gleaming Calvin's understanding of the church fathers.Agree or disagree with Calvin, these are a necessary read for anyone who desires an understanding of the development of Western thought, literature and theology. They are not only great theology; they represent excellent writing and development of an argument. They are also highly pastoral and devotional. They are not like reading a modern systematic theology. Calvin understood doctrine to be more than theory, but something to mold our understanding of God, ourselves and the world in which we live. Carefully working through the Institutes is a journey worth taking!Soli Deo Gloria!

And the two most frequently suggested English translations seem to be the older Henry Beveridge translation and the newer John McNeill and Ford Lewis Battles translation. But it's hard for a layperson like me to know which English translation is "best." So for what it's worth, if anything, I thought the following quotations from Christian scholars might be helpful to some people:1. Here's what Reformed Christian scholar and theological philosopher Paul Helm (who himself has studied and contributed several works on John Calvin) says:"Incidentally, if you have the need of a translation of the Institutes, then the reissue of the Beveridge translation (newly published by Hendrickson) may be just the thing. It has new indexes, and has been 'gently edited', which means, I hope, only the removal of typos and other detritus. (I have not yet had the chance to check). Beveridge is superior to Battles in sticking closer to the original Latin, and having less intrusive editorial paraphernalia."2. Here's another Calvin scholar, Richard A. Muller, on the two translations (from the preface of The Unaccommodated Calvin):"I have also consulted the older translations of the Institutes, namely those of Norton, Allen and Beveridge, in view of both the accuracy of those translation and the relationship in which they stand to the older or 'precritical' text tradition of Calvin's original. Both in its apparatus and in its editorial approach to the text, the McNeill-Battles translation suffers from the mentality of the text-critic who hides the original ambience of the text even as he attempts to reveal all its secrets to the modern reader."3. The following is from J.I. Packer in the foreword to A Theological Guide to Calvin's Institutes:"No English translation fully matches Calvin's Latin; that of the Elizabethan, Thomas Norton, perhaps gets closest; Beveridge gives us Calvin's feistiness but not always his precision; Battles gives us the precision but not always the punchiness, and fleetness of foot; Allen is smooth and clear, but low-key."4. Finally, the following is from David Calhoun:"Let me just say a few words about English translations. The first was Thomas Norton back in the sixteenth century. Calvin was very fortunate with his first English translator. Norton did an exceptionally good job. Very soon after the completion of the Institutes in 1559, which was written in Latin, it was translated by Calvin into French and then quite soon into English. John Allen was the second translator. John Allen and Henry Beveridge were both nineteenth-century translators. The Beveridge translation is still in print. It was until fairly recently anyway. Those are not bad but not very good either. Ford Lewis Battles' 1960 translation is the one that we are using. Even though it has been criticized some, it is by far the most superior translation that we have at present."Once again, I hope this might be helpful to some people.

I have read a couple of puritan book of the 17th century and they are filled with great stuff but because you read them in the original English it's hard going, but this book translated from the Latin is much more readable. Although the book is v. long it is not as hard as you think it is - trust me.2. It is nice to read a good theologian not setting out purely with the aim of defending the doctrines his own denomination has been teaching for centuries. Although is influenced by tradition he is not as obsessed by it as some Protestants today. He does suffer slightly sometimes, i.e. has some wrong ideas about minor points (e.g. the ancient church on confirmation), because he is not just re-plowing a furrow that has be furrowed a thousand times, but these slips are usually picked up in the notes. It's so refreshing.3. He really, really cares about the truth. Yes he does sometimes call his opponents "dogs" and "swine" which is less acceptable now than it once was, but he calls them that because he is angry because he sees heretics catching Christians in their nets, are you not upset when you see that?Earlier reviewers have called him a tyrant because he used his limited power (he wasn't even a citizen of Geneva) to try to stop people sinning as much. Sometimes he went a bit overboard but at least he cared.4. He uses the church fathers a lot more than anyone else I've ever read. He had read so much compared to now. I have heard that he worked very hard, 4hrs sleep, into an early grave etc, and it's not hard to see what he did. He was a full time pastor and yet had read all these books. Scripture is infinitely better than the fathers, but Calvin was concerned about the Catholics and he uses Augustine etc to show the Catholics of then and now that their beloved fathers would have hated the RC church post-500ish. You won't get that much elsewhere.5. His chapters on providence and man's sinfulness. People think this book is all about predestination to salvation, but it doesn't really have a central theme like that. But essential to your understanding of election is God's providence and our depravity and Calvin gives these the right weight and makes so much so clear. However overriding all his writing on election and everything else is that we should try to understand as much as the bible tells us but go no further. He was, it seems to me ( The Institutes of the Christian Religion, Volume 1, by Jean Calvin
