In his preface, the author reminds the reader that this is not a book for the absolute beginner. Even the experienced player may not get it on first reading a given tune, but "You can expect to enjoy the process of learning...[and experience] the joy of recreating a traditional tune, of making it your own." This is the teacher/student pact in effect throughout this marvelous book, written for the literary as much as the musical connoisseur. Although no classical violin experience is needed, you will need to know how to hold the fiddle and bow, and be able to play at least simple tunes in the first position. Having the ability to read music will enable you to follow the bowing patterns and left-hand techniques which the author feels are crucial in grasping the playing style. Includes access to online audio featuring solo fiddle. The teaching recording plays the first tunes slowly, but by the end, the correct speed is played. This stereo recording contains 77 of the 80 songs from the book.

Peter Cooper had me playing--using the term loosely--the Irish Washerwoman in no time. Each song introduces a new element to add to your arsenel of Irish fiddling technique: slurs, grace notes, variations, combining tunes into sets, bowing patterns, and on and on. Most tunes are preceded by a brief lesson: advice, a description of what's coming in the next tune, a breakdown of the patterns, or bars or techniques to practice before trying the tune, etc. Tunes progress in difficulty quite quickly for a beginner. I've got a lot to work on already and I'm only up to tune #6. But I'm having a great time and enjoying Mr. Cooper's selections and advice. There are at least seven tunes in this volume that can be found on Bothy Band albums, such as Butterfly (a version of which is also the haunting tune in the film Secret of Roan Inish). In other words, if you like traditional Irish fiddle music, you'll find some of your favorites in this book. Be sure to purchase this book with its companion cd. Cooper plays each tune in the book: it is invaluable to listen to the rhythms and intonation of the tunes played by a real musician. While I'm no expert, it's difficult to imagine a better organized, more inspiring, collection of tunes. If you're in the mood to fiddle, this is a book to try.

I would give it 10 stars out of 5 By Ferbose This is simply the best book purchase I have ever made.I learned the violin at 7 and stopped when I was 14. Now at 28 I decided to pick it up again. My friend told me that Irish fiddling is great for solos, and I have to agree. Irish fiddle tunes provide its own rythm so that solo violin does not sound bland. One of the frustrating thing about classical violin is that there are so few pieces written for solo violin, and they tend to be very difficult. This is a superb instructional book (and make sure you buy the version with the CD). In three weeks I am learning my sixth song and with each song I learn new techniques and idoims. The book starts with simple tunes and becomes increasingly complex and challenging. But even the simple songs are very tuneful and "Irish." The book is much more than a collection of scores but a self-teaching guide to understanding and playing Irish fiddle. Being Asian, I really enjoy all the tales and additional info about Irish music that help me understand where this music comes from. Lacking any talent in violin playing, when I ordered the book I thought it might take a year or so for me to learn something, but now it looks like in three months I can start entertaining my friends with a few tunes. If I HAD THIS BOOK AS A TEENAGER, I PORBABLY WOULD NOT HAVE STOPPED PLAYING THE VIOLIN BACK THEN.

He has progressively placed each tune from simple to moderately complex, beginning to end, through the book. But the best of this book is the (OPTIONAL) two CD version which has him starting at a very easy pace for beginners. Toward the end of CD #2 he is playing at a faster but still followable pace for the student to grasp. Most accompanying CDs are an "Ain't I great?" show of the author's abilities. Instead, Peter Cooper puts away his ego and steps you through how to perform a finger a roll or a slur the Irish way.I love this book. It gave me the ability to join in at many local sessions with confidence.Update:Another reviewer was disappointed that s/he ordered this book, but failed to realize that their book did not come with CDs. These reviews (like this one that you are reading now) are linked to two editions of this book; one that includes 2 CDs, and another (same book) that does not include the CDs. This is a very common situation when buying music instruction books. So, the Reder Reviews can innocently mislead you. Order carefully! Make your item selection on the information from the Web Site Vendor, not from reviewers comments. If you are an aspiring Irish Fiddler and- don't have access to a teacher, or- want additional "tutoring" between your fiddle classes, or- you're frustrated trying to keep up with the playing speed of other master fiddlers' recordings, then I highly recommend spending the extra money for the edition of this book that includes 2 CDs. See my earlier review to find out why I appreciate Pete's work on these CDs!See you at the pub!LL

"It's like GONE GIRL meets ENDLESS LOVE. A terrific story filled with fascinating characters." -- Ethan Cross, international best-selling author of THE SHEPHERD "My obsession with WHAT IT WAS LIKE is identical to the one the story’s wry, intelligent, and completely unremorseful narrator has for the beautiful, sexually intoxicating and mesmerizing Rachel Prince, with whom he begins a romance that we know from the opening pages is ill-fated. Once I started reading, I had to finish the book as fast as I could. Reading What is Was Like made me experience all the joys – and dangers – of teenage lust with an immediacy that I haven’t felt since SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS.” – Stan Chervin, Screenwriter, Academy Award nominee for MONEYBALL “WHAT IT WAS LIKE is a story about all kinds of love – the obsessive first love of two unforgettable teenagers as well as the layers of love that can lie in tortuous wait between parents and children, a love as deep and hidden as an ominous quarry. If indeed you’ve ever wondered what kind of parents J.D. Salinger and Patricia Highsmith would have made if they had gotten together, then look no further than Peter Seth, their literary progeny.” – Kevin Sessums, author, I LEFT IT ON THE MOUNTAIN and editor in chief, FourTwoNine magazine “I was the world’s rudest houseguest the weekend I brought along WHAT IT WAS LIKE. From the opening chapter, I could not look away until I had read through to the stunning (and heartbreaking!) final pages. Peter Seth has done a wickedly skillful job of storytelling.” – Kate Klimo, Author of THE DRAGON KEEPERS and THE DOG DIARIES “Passionate, stark, haunted fiction that nails it on the head about young adult romance gone awry.” – Crystal Book Reviews “It’s really a very simple story. What happened was this: I met this girl and did a very stupid thing. I fell in love. Hard. I know that to some people that makes me an idiot and a loser. What can I say? They’re right. I did some extremely foolish things; I’m the first to say it. And they’ve left me in jail and alone.” So begins one of the most compelling, emotionally charged, and affecting novels you are likely to read this year. It is the summer of 1968 and a young man takes a job at a camp in upstate New York before starting his first semester at Columbia University. There, he meets Rachel Price, a fellow counselor who is as beautiful as she is haunted. Their romance will burn with a passion neither of them has ever known before…a passion with the power to destroy. WHAT IT WAS LIKE is an intimate, raw, and revealing journey through the landscape of all-consuming love. It announces the debut of a remarkable storyteller.

By Mark Watt "We were on this wild, real-life amusement park ride -- part House of Horrors, part Tunnel of Love -- and we couldn't stop now."That sentence from Peter Seth's "What It Was Like" perfectly captures one of the most compulsively thrilling novels I've read in years. A pitch-perfect portrayal of the zeitgeist of the late '60s, the book moves easily and organically from genre to genre. It starts out as an innocent love story and reminiscence of youth at a summer camp, then gradually becomes a riveting story of emotional addiction between our two young lovers, Rachel and "Defendant X," who appear to have everyone aligned against them. Always wishing them the worst are Rachel's mother and sleazy step-dad, living in pampered decadence in their mansion and trying to control Rachel's every move. But "Defendant X" is about to snap...and the novel turns into a breathless, fugitive thriller with its lovers on the run from the police and, it seems, the whole world! Along the way are provocative detours into a kinky card game and intimations of bisexuality. What else can I say? Although I found this to be perfect summer reading, I'd wager this book is impossible to stop reading in ANY season. "What It Was Like" is suitable for readers of all ages between young adults to Boomers because it captures the idyllic days of summer camp AND the 1960s as accurately as any time capsule. Peter Seth is a born writer and has knocked it out of the park in his first book. Stay tuned because I bet he's got a highly promising career ahead of him as a novelist. BRAVO!

This is the debut novel from author Peter Seth and I couldn’t put it down. It is a story of a shy middle-class young man who works at a youth camp during the summer before he starts his college career at Columbia. There, he encounters his first true love, Rachael. She is a rich, spoiled manipulative, soon to be a high school senior who wraps his heart and mind around her finger. It starts off like other typical novels that you have read but that’s where it ends. Just when you think you know where the story is headed it changes directions. It’s a roller coaster ride to the very last pageThe story is told in the first person narrative style. The author does an amazing job with this approach. You are inside the young man’s mind from page one. You can almost hear his voice as you read the story. You are taken back to your own youth and the strong feelings that your first true love evoked. Maybe it was just the mother in me but I found myself thinking, Please stop and think about what you are doing! Then as you brace yourself for one outcome, a curve is thrown and you are left thinking..Oh my, I didn’t see that coming!!!I highly recommend this book but offer this warning…be careful because you won’t want to put it down until the last page is turned!

A stirring last year of childhood endures... Brushed by the tailwind of a passing bicycle, a 44-year old woman drifts into a stream of memories from the tumultuous twelfth year of her life. Eleven-year old Edie, who loves her bike and dreams of flying on the space shuttle, moves to Vermont in 1981. She and her older sister, Jess, her Japanese-American mother and her attentive father settle in a quaint village along the Cold River at Nobody House, a sturdy old farmhouse. As Edie explores her captivating new surroundings, questions swirl about a haunted barn, a girl's shocking, unexplained death from long ago, and a twice stolen gravestone. Edie learns remarkable secrets from her mother's past while grappling with her sister's turmoil and solitary river walks, including a confrontation with a village foe. The Cold River’s allure and danger present Edie with tests of courage and determination. Key events of her life-changing year converge in a disastrous storm and ripple far into Edie’s adult life. This lyrical coming-of-age novel will draw readers to their own recollections of childhood adventure and family bonds, as it reveals the compelling memories and losses that shape one woman's life.

Family secrets and a flowing river bring adolescence to light By Elie Axelroth "And I Became a River" is a story about eleven year old Edie Woodworth, the year her family moves from California to the small Vermont town of Waitstill. Her father, a college professor and her mother, a Japanese-American nurse buy an old abandoned house nicknamed "Nobody House, " purported to be haunted. In the course of Edie's exploration of the town, she comes across a stolen headstone. The girl, Lucy Munson, had mysteriously died at a young age and Edie pursues her curiosity to find out what happened. While Edie makes the transition to her new home with ease, her older sister, Jess becomes moody and distant, bringing to light not only Jess's struggles, but well-kept family secrets. The novel is written as a first-person account in Edie's voice. Initially, I found the narrative slow, but soon Edie's voice took over. The descriptions of Edie coasting on her bicycle, the flow of the river, and a flood of Biblical force, all work together to capture the boundary between childhood and adolescence and Edie's acceptance that life is not always easy or what we expect. Schultz interweaves the parallels of these two stories—the mystery of Lucy Munson's death, the cemetery, a haunted house—with the present-day Woodworth family crisis. Themes of death, transition, reconciliation with the past, and the role of memory in our lives makes this novel sing. "And I Became a River" will appeal to older adolescent and adult readers as well.

A fun and interesting read with great themes and thought provoking twists and turns By jobie brigham I so enjoyed the beautiful lay out and development of this story. "And I Became River " is a fluid and beautifully written coming of age story that interweaves many interesting and complex thoughts and questions regarding life, death, love and the after life. The author did a beautiful job of describing the setting and the scenery. I completely fell in love with so many of the story's references like the town of Waitsill, the covered bridge, the old barn and the cemetery. The plot unfolded in fun and interesting ways. The author was creative and expansive in how he constructed and deconstructed ideas about death, life and the ghosts we wrestle from our pasts and within our own selves. This book triggered my interest to learn more about Manzanar and helped spur on my curiosity and learning in other areas. I highly recommend this book as a fun and interesting read with valuable and interesting themes.

By Ronald C Koeppel My neighbor suggested I read this, the story of an eleven-year-old who moves with her family from California to Vermont, and it's a gem. The "previous" inhabitants of the old farmhouse they move into, a troubled older sister, a broken headstone in the local cemetery, women who fly, a Japanese-American internment camp, diving horses, an Irene-like deluge, and the Windsor-Cornish covered bridge all figure prominently. Reminiscent of Willa Cather, which is a very good thing in MY book. Filled with lots of wisdom, and a very good read for parents as well as young adults with serious questions about this world.
