Rewind, by Jeremy Bates

Review "Jeremy Bates's novella "Rewind" is listed by Amazon as a horror book, but that's a bit misleading. It does have elements of horror in it, as the protagonist finds himself in a very scary situation for much of the book. But it's actually more of a science fiction, mystery, suspense thriller and it combines all those elements, plus a terrific twist ending, in about 100 pages. It's scary that an author can do so much so quickly and so well."Rewind" belongs to a rather specific subgenre of mystery, the amnesiac story, one that Alfred Hitchcock had fun with in the classic "Spellbound." Here, the main character wakes up in a dingy apartment hooked up by various electrodes to a mysterious machine with no idea who or where he is or what the machine is for. Worse, there's a dead body in the next room, and the hero has no idea who that is either. He soon realizes he's in New York City, but according to his driver's license, he's a man named Harry Parker from Texas. He also discovers he has access to a bank account with $750K. So, he does what anyone in his situation would do: checks himself into a fancy room at the Plaza and starts spending some of that money on creature comforts, all the while trying to figure out just who he is.Bates wrote "Rewind" in the first person, so readers are privy to Harry's thought processes as he tries to reconstruct his past, and they experience the same burst of recognition he does as he gradually pieces his identity and past together. Bates is quite an accomplished writer, and his descriptions, dialogue, and Harry's inner monologues all sound authentic and are quite lively. No matter how stressful Harry's predicament becomes, he and Bates don't lose their sense of humor. Gradually, readers realize that Harry is a pretty shrewd judge of people and actually a pretty good detective as well. It doesn't take long for him to find someone who tells him how he got into his situation."Rewind" has such a clever, twisty plot that I wouldn't want to give any of it away. I'll just say that the reasons behind Harry's amnesia are far fetched, but, if you accept the author's premise, the events in the story make sense and are logical. And even once Harry learns exactly who he is, Bates pulls off a really clever twist ending, one that both makes perfect sense and caught me completely by surprise.Author Bates could easily have turned "Rewind" into a novel by having Harry pursue some red herrings in his quest to discover who he is and by "explaining" the explanation of what happened in greater depth. But he's done a great job on covering all his essential bases, creating an interesting character in Harry (who becomes far more interesting once the whole truth is revealed), and creating a fast paced work that doesn't feel sketchy or rushed. Instead, "Rewind," as it name implies, is a book you can easily rewind and read again just to see how Bates pulls it all off."- Silver Screen Videos

About the Author Jeremy Bates is the #1 bestselling and award-winning author of more than a dozen novels and novellas, which have been translated into several languages. He writes suspense and horror fiction. The novels in the "World's Scariest Places" series are set in real locations, and so far include Suicide Forest in Japan, The Catacombs in Paris, Helltown in Ohio, and Island of the Dolls in Mexico. You can check out any of these places on the web, or visit his website at JEREMYBATESBOOKS.COM to receive a FREE novel.

But I persevered and it picked up and swiftly ended with a bang. I don't like to rehash the author's writing, so I will just say the ending made up for a little boring in the beginning. I liked this story because it was written without spelling or punctuation errors, and I could not have foreseen the ending.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Keep reading! By Stephen A. Hardy I wasn't sure if I was going to like this at first because the beginning was making zero sense. As I read, however, the pace picked up, and I was trying to figure out what the heck was going on with the main character, and wondering what he was going to do next. The story does NOT disappoint! Good read.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Horror with a twist By Robert Krueger What if you awoke to find yourself in a living nightmare? You walk away from your confinement, back to the normal world, but with zero understanding of what has happened. Welcome to Harry Parker's 'new' world, one without memory. This is a story of discovery, and Harry will not like what he finds, but he adjusts rapidly -- a surprise (horror) ending. The author develops the plot with polish; Parker is an engrossing character no matter what you may think of him Reviewed by the author of The Children's Story, About Good and Evil.

Surreal photography is adopted in advertisements to achieve strong appeal to the customers. It rests on aesthetical manipulation of imageries of real life objects to drive home adverts information in a more functional way. In other words, Surreal photography is not an arrangement of abstract pictures. Rather, the images are real life images carefully put together in an innovative and a far-from-conventional manner to project the message of the surrealist effectively. Though traditional Surrealism seeks to create a disturbing effect, the current application of Surreal photography in advertising creates an appealing effect. It would not have been important to advertising if it had been otherwise. The beautiful aspect of the Surrealism feature is that the image composition and arrangement are such that it produces better impressions on the viewers than would the conventional advertisement. This may be due to its somewhat unusual configuration of images. Direct studies of pictorial communication in advertising are rare. However, emphasis on the nature and influence of pictorial communication has been given in psychology, social psychology and anthropology. This book provides a useful foundation for the study of surreal images in advertising.

Highly effective education tool By Pari Gilmour Surreal Photography and Effective Advertising is an ideal introduction to photography in general and specifically to its application in advertising. Raqee Najmuldeen provides an excellent abridged history of photography and the surrealist movement to introduce the reader to Photo-surrealism, a concept that he has captured and defined to describe the remarkable use that photography has been put to, particularly in advertising in the21st Century. As a teacher of Art and Photography I would have to describe this publication as a Godsend. Raqee provides multiple entry points for students of photography to access this highly specialised art form. He describes in detail and with examples the many theoretical design concepts with which an accomplished photography should be comfortable. However, the manner in which these concepts are discussed is practical, realistic and easy for even the novice to grasp. The discussion which supports the material in the book covers some of the significant cultural frameworks in which photography as a communications medium, is located. This includes semiotics, psychology and the business of advertising. In fact, while the thrust of the text moves towards advertising as a practical and lucrative field for a photographer to consider as a career, the major topics are of relevance for all who choose to work in photographic representation. Key points which I find myself hoping to realise in my students are put into context as valid and important in an advertising setting. These include planning, consideration of audience, the message being conveyed, challenges we confront and the broader global context of communication. All of these are issues that photography students sometimes struggle to identify as they begin their learning journey.I was so impressed with Surreal Photography and Effective Advertising that I would not hesitate to recommend it equally as both a student text book and as a window providing deeper insight into the world of photography generally.

Najmuldeen is a powerful, well-written book aimed at providing designers a means of coming up with ideas for successful advertisements using surreal photography. Najmuldeen writes about how to combine real-life images in a way that is unique and attention-grabbing while being effective for advertising. One of the things I like about the way Najmuldeen organizes the book is that he builds from the ground up. He opens by discussing the concept of surrealism (its origins, the different styles, its role in photography) before moving onto its usage in advertising in terms of the brand, message, etc. Najmuldeen makes a strong case for the value of surreal photography in successful advertising using well-thought out reasoning, and provides clear steps for implementing the approach in your own work. If you’re a designer who wants to take a fresh approach to advertising, I’d highly recommend this book to you.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Interesting! By A Customer According to the introduction in this book, this story is from a manuscript that was written by Lieutenant Linai T. Helm, who was a survivor of the Fort Dearborn Massacre. Helm wrote the manuscript two years after the end of the War of 1812. He didn't publish it because he was advised that his description in the book of being disrespectful to his commanding officer might end in his court-marital. The manuscript was found many years later and was originally published in 1912. This book is a faithful re-print of that publishing. The book itself is absorbing and very interesting. The fate of the residents of Fort Dearborn was horrific and is described in great detail as is the story of the survivors. The story is told in the first person which draws the reader even further into the action. I highly recommend this book to all early American history buffs and anyone who is interested in the history of the War of 1812. I also highly recommend this book to anyone who likes a good story because you will find one in this book. Buy it, read it, enjoy it.

Chose this as a glimpse of what lovers of Kipling were talking about and thought this was not a great choice, but really haven't read it all.

This award-winning amply illustrated volume of informative essays and vibrant prints by the current members of the California Society of Printmakers was published to commemorate its 2013 centennial year. Readers interested in knowing more about how a small group of prominent artist-etchers in Northern California formulated an aspirational society near the turn of the 20th century and transformed itself over the course of one hundred years—welcoming artists, working in all printmaking media, into its company from around the United States and abroad—will find the ideal source in this lush book. California Society of Printmakers: One Hundred Years, 1913-2013 offers a comprehensive set of knowledgeable viewpoints and personal anecdotes about its rich history by four diverse artists, a respected curator, a dealer in fine prints, and a noted visual resources artist/librarian. What makes this book so luminous and up-to-date are the 250+ reproductions of woodcuts, lithographs, etchings, screenprints, monoprints, monotypes, solarplates, and mixed digital and photo-based hybrid prints by the talented membership of this international society of both young and established artists. To celebrate its publication, the Library of Congress welcomed many original prints illustrated in this volume into its collection. The book contains member artists’ bios, extensive notes, detailed appendices, a glossary, and bibliography, and is a valuable resource for artists, collectors, curators, historians, and anyone who appreciates fine art prints and printmaking.  In 2014 ARLIS (Art Libraries Society of North America) conferred its Worldwide Books Publication of the Year Award on this book.

This is the second collection of fragmentary fiction and poetry by incredibly talented and entirely self-taught young author Madeline Aldrich, a 7-year-old girl with a polished prose style that is, for many readers, literally unbelievable.
