God is the ultimate teacher, and if you choose to allow Him, he will touch your life in eternal ways while you sit shivering in a tree stand waiting for a deer that never shows. I have come to treasure these moments, and I have journeyed closer to God as a result of my time in the wilderness.

Wilderness Reflections is a collection of short stories that grew out of a love for both the words of the Bible and adventures in the outdoors. Men’s souls seem to be in conflict between the demands of their everyday lives and their recreational pursuits. Sunday church time can seem to be more about duty than community, and the call of the wild can all too often reach into the pews and distract us from our heavenly goals—but the two need not be separated. This book is for those who can find evidence of God’s teaching not in the confines of a building but in the vastness of the wilderness.

These stories ultimately reflect my personal journey from only having church on Sundays to having it when I venture afield any day of the week. I’ve heard other hunters refer to this as “the church of the woods.” It is in this church that I find meaning and seek to clarify the muddle of everyday life. The results have, in part, been captured here, and while the lessons inside may ultimately be meaningful only to the author; the telling may benefit others as well.

I too very much enjoyed my time in the woods camping and hiking with my son and friends. I gave up hunting many years ago after my hunting partner passed away in 1999 a few days short of 2000. A new outdoors chapter is beginning in my life with my son and his twin Boyz Nathan and Jamie now 10 years old. We've been to a few boy scouts camps, some fishing and are planning some hiking excursions.I have a brother in my small group that's still hunting and I'm sure he'll enjoy your bookClint

For anyone who enjoys the outdoors the book gives you a feel that you are with Jeff in the field. The book is a good reminder that God is the creator and sustains our planet. Jeff does a good job of demonstrating that we can learn much about God in the wilderness and not just in church. Highly recommend the book!

McCollum Reflections provides a superb reading experience not only for those interested in hunting and fishing, but also for those who recognize the natural beauty God gave us and how we can better relate to it. I found in the short, but meaningful chapters a devotional opportunity to start the day in a most pleasant an uplifting way.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I finished the book with a sense of sadness; By judithanne I started off liking What Jennifer Knows by Wendy Janes; I finished the novel loving it.To say this is an easy book to read could sound derogatorily, but, believe me, that is not what I mean; the author’s writing style is relaxed conversational and draws the reader in. The story is told mainly in the first person from the protagonist’s point of view (which gives us an insight to her opinion and relationship with the other characters), but there is also omniscient narrator’s viewpoint from the other characters’ point of view. The clever use of texts between three of the characters, the flashbacks that reveal the protagonist's past, are innovative and revealing. It sounds complicated but it works so well. The dialogue is true to each character and is skilfully handled, especially the internal dialogue of the character of Freya, a vulnerable young woman, susceptible to self-doubt and with a dread of returning to the mental unstable state she once found herself in - and of Jennifer's friend, Abi, an outwardly confident career woman. And, as the story progresses, the initial portrayal of all the characters subtly changes as their personalities are truly revealed. The various settings are drawn with an economy of description, yet still give a sense of place for the characters to move around in; the reader is given no doubt that this is a story placed slap bang in a Surrey community that is, in essence,an English upper middle-class society. And the small details, revealed mostly through the dialogue, show the amount of research the author has carried out to give a true sense of the era.The various strands of the plot and sub-plots are shrewdly drawn together, each character sharing an almost equal portion of the story. By the end of the novel I felt as though I knew each character, their lives, and how they viewed the world and those around them. I finished the book with a sense of sadness; one that I had read the last page - always a good sign for any reader I suppose, and also a sense of sadness for the characters - so much did they seem to become real people. I'm not sure how I wanted it to end but ... If I have any reservations about the novel it's the instant friendship between, Jennifer and Freya, And the speed with which it grows. Yet, on reflection, I suppose, given the inner need of both these characters, it is plausible. I have absolutely no hesitation recommending What Jennifer Knows. It's a lovely début novel from Wendy Janes.I received a copy of What Jennifer Knows from the author and as part of Rosie's Book Review Team #RBRT in exchange for an honest review.

My star rating - 4.5 starsI'd already read and enjoyed a couple of short stories by this author, and was looking forward to her first full-length novel. I wasn't disappointed. From perhaps about a third of the way in, you can see the 'car crash' waiting to happen, as you are meant to, however the journey to get to that point is what keeps us hooked, and wanting to read more. I found myself being annoyed by the household tasks which got in the way of my being able to read more, always a good sign! I liked Jennifer, and to a slightly lesser extent her husband, who I thought was a bit up himself. But I did think Jennifer would have been an interesting person to meet, and a helpful soul. Abi, her friend, would have been interesting to meet too, but I liked her a bit less. She was very self-absorbed, but was meant to be. Only later in the book do we find out much more about Abi, her emotions and the reasons for her behaviour. Freya, Jennifer's new friend, is the antithesis of Abi, and you could imagine people walking all over her, as she was so nice. The dilemma facing Jennifer when she unearths a common link between her two friends, old and new, is an age-old, and tricky one. I'd like to say I would have done the opposite of what Jennifer did, but who can tell. This is the kind of novel which you could happily debate with your friends about whether the right choice had been made. I particularly loved the ending, and found it a little unexpected. The gall and the audacity of the male lead in all of this knew no bounds and I would certainly give him a piece of my mind if I ever met him. The writing style is easy to read, yet the prose is beautiful. A very well-crafted book for a debut novel, with the various strands being seamlessly woven together, and the denouement coming as a bit of a shock. I think we have a new contemporary fiction author to watch. I look forward to the next book

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. What would you do for friends? By Michelle James Jennifer is the friend everyone should have. Do you have a secret? Jennifer can be trusted to keep a confidence. She divides her time among the things most important to her – her grandchildren, husband, friends, and her part-time job as a dance therapist teaching children with special needs. But her relationship with her daughter Blythe is strained. They both have a lot to work out before they can have the easy relationship Jennifer longs to have with her daughter. When Jennifer meets Freya at the grocery store, she soon is listening to Freya’s plan to propose to her boyfriend, Oliver. Jennifer and Freya soon fall into an easy friendship, and Jennifer wonders why she and Blythe can’t have the same kind of relationship. Jennifer’s longtime friend Abi can’t make up her mind whether or not to ask her boyfriend Ed to move in with her. Jennifer supports Abi in her decision. But when Jennifer discovers what Freya and Abi don’t know, can she tell them? Will Jennifer and Blythe ever find common ground? What role does Jennifer’s grandson Tim play in keeping Jennifer and Blythe at odds or helping them reconcile whatever differences are keeping their relationship on rocky ground? I relished reading What Jennifer Knows. Wendy Janes did an excellent job crafting the story and developing the characters. It is a quick read but contained all the necessary details needed to keep my interest. Jennifer must deal with the issues of morality and loyalty and leaves the reader wondering, “what would I do?” I recommend this to all readers of women’s fiction. I look forward to reading more from this author.I was given a copy of What Jennifer Knows by author Wendy Janes in exchange for an honest review.

In late January, 1971, eighteen-year-old Becky Decker reported for her first day of work at Byerley State Hospital and School, a state-run institution spoken of mostly in whispers. She hoped to make friends, and to "make a difference" in her very first job. What she found during that week was a world of heartbreak and hope in a universe that no longer exists. "Kathleen Taylor is one of the best storytellers around. The Nut Hut is a total-immersion into the 1971 world of residential care for the mentally retarded. It is ruthlessly honest, but at the same time extraordinarily moving. A totally captivating novel that will draw you in and not let you out until the last page is read." Denise Swanson--New York Times Bestselling Author of the Scumble River and Devereaux's Dime Store series "The Nut Hut is a chilling tale about the cold heart of state institutions. A smart, insightful novel, it’s full of more truths than any ten works of nonfiction and way more entertaining." Reed Farrel Coleman, three-time Shamus Award-winning author of Gun Church "Kathleen Taylor's brilliant novel "The Nut Hut" takes the reader on a harrowing trip inside a state institution for people with mental disabilities, circa 1971. Through young Becky Decker's baptism of fire -- her first week on the job -- we explore Byerley State Hospital with the eyes of an innocent. Our appreciation for the workers and the patients and their day-to-day dance of survival grows along with Becky's own. By the end, we're confident that she -- and we -- have a better understanding of them all. Highly recommended." --Steve Brewer, author of the Bubba Mabry mysteries "A sweeter, less caustic version of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, the Nut Hut by Kathleen Taylor is the story of attendant Becky Decker’s first week in a mental institution during the early 1970’s. Still, the story retains a bite. The prose is velvety smooth, and the sharp characterizations make for a fast, unputdownable read. I recommend it highly, if only to remind those of us who are not impaired how blessed we really are." Libby Fischer Hellmann, author of A BITTER VEIL

Excellent Book By DeeAnn Hudson The Nut Hut by Kathleen Taylor is a harrowing, compelling and intense book, totally fictional but based on an 18-year-old's actual experience. I was not able to put this book down. If you love great writing and excellent books, this will fill the bill perfectly.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Bravo! By Joanne I worked at a psychiatric hospital from 1968-72 and Kathleen's book certainly brought back a lot of memories. What a great read and Becky's determination and grit (and innocence)was perfect.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Poignant Story Well Told By Kelly Brewer I loved reading The Nut Hut. Ms. Taylor has perfectly captured a time and place -- the early '70s in a mental institution. I came away with an unexpected understanding of the residents and a deep appreciation for their caregivers. It's an excellent story told with grace and humor. Thank you!

Ebook PDF The Conflict Myth and the Biblical Tradition, by Debra Scoggins Ballentine

There are many ancient West Asian stories that narrate the victory of a warrior deity over an enemy, typically a sea-god or sea dragon, and his rise to divine kingship. In The Conflict Myth and the Biblical Tradition, Debra Scoggins Ballentine analyzes this motif, arguing that it was used within ancient political and socio-religious discourses to bolster particular divine hierarchies, kings, institutions, and groups, as well as to attack others. Situating her study of the conflict topos within contemporary theorizations of myth by Bruce Lincoln, Russell McCutcheon, and Jonathan Z. Smith, Ballentine examines narratives of divine combat and instances of this conflict motif. Her study cuts across traditional disciplinary boundaries as well as constructed time periods, focusing not only on the Hebrew Bible but also incorporating Mesopotamian, early Jewish, early Christian, and rabbinic texts, spanning a period of almost three millennia - from the eighteenth century BCE to the early middle ages CE. The Conflict Myth and the Biblical Tradition advances our understanding of the conflict topos in ancient west Asian and early Jewish and Christian literatures and of how mythological and religious ideas are used both to validate and render normative particular ideologies and socio-political arrangements, and to delegitimize and invalidate others.

The Conflict Myth and the Biblical Tradition, by Debra Scoggins Ballentine

Review "This is the most comprehensive discussion to date of the Conflict/Combat Myth in the Bible in the ancient Near East. It is also the first such study that is informed by the modern discussion of myth. A very useful book." --John J. Collins, Holmes Professor of Old Testament, Yale University

"Debra Scoggins Ballantine has written a work of great insight, a sophisticated study that challenges us to rethink our existing understandings of the conflict myth in its various iterations. She navigates a wide spectrum of sources and builds a case with an equal measure of scholarly rigor and imagination. This is a major contribution and will find a central place in the ongoing discussion in the field." --Mark Leuchter, Associate Professor of Hebrew Bible and Ancient Judaism, Temple University

"Ballentine's keen study is groundbreaking with its comprehensive analysis of the combat myth as ideological production. Building on the work of Bruce Lincoln and Jonathan Z. Smith on how myths encode hierarchical taxonomies, Ballentine deftly articulates the legitimizing and delegitimizing ideology of the conflict topos. Ballentine's nuanced and wide-ranging research (covering the combat myth from the Middle Bronze Age to the rabbinic period) will prove enlightening for all historians of religion." --Theodore J. Lewis, Blum-Iwry Professor of Near Eastern Studies, Johns Hopkins University

"[The] work is excellent in its presentation of the conflict myth and biblical innovations of it. Wide coverage of literature, from Ugaritic works to Rabbinic works, and thorough analysis of each occur of the conflict motif mark her work as on to be remembered for future discussion. The Conflict Myth & the Biblical Tradition provides a unique approach to conflict myth, and especially the Hebrew Bible, that may be utilized by scholars to develop a deeper and fuller understanding of biblical myth and the conflict myth." --Biblical Review

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. An Alternative to Chaoskampf By William H. Brown The Conflict Myth & the Biblical Tradition by Debra Scoggins Ballentine. New York, NY: Oxford University Press, 2015, 292 pp., $74, hardcover.*I would like to express my gratitude to Oxford University Press for providing a review copy of The Conflict Myth & the Biblical Tradition. The Conflict Myth & the Biblical Tradition traces conflict myth as an ideological tool for legitimization, or de-legitimization, of political entities throughout ancient West Asia. An assistant professor at Rutgers University in the Department of Religion, Debra Scoggins Ballentine specializes in Hebrew bible and ancient Near Eastern religions.Chapter One of The Conflict Myth introduces Ballentine's approach to myth theory and her purpose, namely "to identify how mythological themes are used in various sorts of contexts, regardless of how scholars classify those contexts" (12). Specifically she focuses on the mythological conflict topos and "its place with respect to ideology" (13). Chapter Two introduces and analyzes the conflict topos within four extant narratives, Anzu, Enuma Elilsh, Aššur Version of Enuma Elish, and the Balu Cycle. Each summary and analysis of extant narrative draws out and focuses upon the ideological implications, especially royal ideology. Ballentine demonstrates that each narrative, though with differing divine taxonomies, utilizes the conflict topos to legitimate kings and royalty, while also de-legitimizing other deities. In effect the myth narratives "promote particular cosmic and earthy locations and royal individuals" (71). Having established the ideological nature of the conflict topos, chapter three analyzes "shorter forms of the motif in epitomes, allusions, and imagery" (72) from sources between the 18th and 6th centuries BCE. Ballentine is careful to display the unique status of various utilizations of the conflict myth through every example. Chapter four continues by noting the various adaptations of the conflict myth through innovative legitimization within eschatological frameworks, drawing on literature of the Hebrew Bible, New Testament, 1st and 2nd century Pseudepigrapha, and Rabbinic literature. Chapter five explores the secondary application of conflict myth to Gamaliel, Jesus, and Antiochus IV in regard to the notion of control over the sea. The final chapter (Chapter 5) importantly argues that "Chaos" "is not an accurate characterization of the various enemies featured across the articulations of the ancient West Asian conflict topos" (186) and re-states her primary points, especially drawing out the uniqueness of each application of the conflict myth for each particular ideological intention and political environment.More here...https://thebiblicalreview.wordpress.com/2015/07/15/the-conflict-myth-the-biblical-tradition-by-debra-scoggins-ballentine/
