Ng’ombwana is a (fictional) African nation to have emerged in the wake of colonialism; as it happens, its President is Inspector Alleyn’s old school chum, the "Boomer." Old school ties being what they are, the Boomer—making an official visit to London—insists that Alleyn handle his security, rather than Her Majesty’s Special Branch. The Special Branch is not best pleased about this, as the Boomer is known to have some very deadly enemies, and the threats only increase when the Ng’ombwanan ambassador is killed. Happily for the Boomer, not only is Alleyn up to the task, but he is assisted by the rescued cat Lucy Lockett, who may have lost her pocket but proves extremely adept at finding clues.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A State Visit By Bettylouise I read Dame Marsh in the 196-70's and relly enjoyed them. I am reading them again from my library. This,one is a hardcover version. The Special Branch is in a panic as the President of an emerging African nation of Ng'ombwana is planning State Visit to England. He is noted for doing his own thing as he is an old school friend of Roderick Alleyn; he is asked to help them protect him. If you like twists and turns in a book read an expert does it. This changes will keep you guessing and the ending is a surprise. I have forgotten how much I enjoyed this series..

I think it's one of the best she wrote. Concerning the racial, bigoted language and attitudes mentioned by an offended reader in his review, please let me point out that this book would not exist had not some of its characters had very strong feelings of anger, resentment, bitterness, etc. toward all members of a different race .It would be nice if there truly no longer existed any of these ugly and illogical feelings. However, as late as 1980, a co-worker of mine who happened to be.of a different racial ancestry, was preparing to leave the state to attend the funeral of her college-student nephew who had been hanged.The young man had been dating a young lady whose parents were of a "superior" race, and this was the motive for the crime. I can still remember my feelings of shock and horror, and how difficult it was to believe that such a thing had happened in that day and time. Rather than finding parts of this book offensive, I find them educational.
