The renowned and highly influential architect, furniture-maker, interior designer and photographer Eileen Gray was born in Ireland and remained throughout her life an Irishwoman at heart. An elusive figure, her interior world has never before been observed as closely as in this ground-breaking study of her work, philosophy and inner circle of fellow artists.Jennifer Goff expertly blends art history and biography to create a stunning ensemble, offering a clear beacon of light into truly understanding Gray – the woman and the professional. Gray was a self-taught polymath and her work was multi-functional, user-friendly, ready for mass production yet succinctly unique, and her designs show great technical virtuosity. Her expertise in lacquer work and carpet design, often overlooked, is given due attention in this book, as is her fascinating relationship with the architect Le Corbusier and many other compelling and complex relationships. The book also offers rare insights into Gray’s early years as an artist. The primary source material for this book is drawn from the Eileen Gray collection at the National Museum of Ireland and its wealth of documentation, correspondence, personal archives, photographs and oral history.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Why Gray matters By Andrew S. Rogers As I write this review, the premiere of "The Price of Desire," a feature film starring my favorite actress, the magnificent Orla Brady, as the Irish architect and designer Eileen Gray is just hours away. The film is the latest project to debut as part of the loose "Eileen Gray Project" (#EileenGrayProject in social media). Other projects gathered under this umbrella have included the documentary film "Gray Matters," and -- perhaps most significant, in terms of the scope and total work involved -- this highly impressive book by Jennifer Goff.Dr. Goff is curator of furniture, silver, music, scientific instruments, and (most relevantly) the Eileen Gray collection at the National Museum of Ireland. Arguably no one is better positioned, therefore, to finally rescue Eileen Gray from the obscurity into which she fell during her own lifetime, and to put her in her proper place and context as a trailblazer in art, architecture, and design in the twentieth century. The NMI is the repository of Gray's surviving papers and library, and Goff made exhaustive use of them to show the influences and inspirations Gray drew on across her long career. The early sections of this book are divided up by media: painting, sculpture, and photography; lacquer; furniture; and finally architecture. This topical approach made the chronology a bit hard to follow sometimes, but you can only admire the breadth, not only of Gray's work, but also of Goff's.Goff's writing is well-sourced and informative, if sometimes a bit leaden. It occasionally falls into a rhythm of simple, declarative sentences. One sentence states a fact. The next sentence states a second fact. At times it felt like riding on a train, with a steady thump-thump-thump of unvarying style. There are also sometimes odd effects like this: "Gray says to Haweis in one letter that he tells her nothing personal about himself: `You tell me nothing about yourself'" (p. 327). Still, it's worth putting up with in exchange for all the information you glean.Where the writing becomes more spirited is in describing the conflict between Gray and Le Corbusier over E.1027, the house Gray designed and built in the south of France (this conflict is the centerpiece of "The Price of Desire," too). A large part of the reason Gray disappeared from history was the deliberate effort by Corbu and others to deny her credit for E.1027. Goff clears away the mud and proves -- in a way I hope settles this for good -- that E.1027 was Gray's work in design and execution. Goff shows the fight was not only a battle of artistic egos, with more than a little vindictive misogyny thrown in, but also of philosophy. In a brilliant reply to Corbu's dictum that "a house is a machine for living in," Gray wrote (in a passage Goff likes enough to quote three times, by my count), "A house is not a machine to live in. It is the shell of man, his extension, his release, his spiritual emanation. Not only its visual harmony but its entire organization -- all the terms of the work -- combine to render it human in the most profound sense" (p. 347).Despite this, and although Gray's interaction with many of her art and design contemporaries as well as friends and family members is well documented, the one area I kept feeling like this book was coming up short was in giving us a really good look at Eileen Gray as a person. This is I'm sure due in part to Gray's own "withdrawn, reserved" (p. 79) nature and her desire to "control not only her environment but also the people around her" (p. 429), including her destruction of many of her personal papers and early works. Yet it must also have been a conscious decision by the author, possibly (I speculate) because the drama of Eileen Gray's life has been told and retold so many other places. News stories surrounding the release of this book have mentioned that it was distilled from a PhD thesis almost five times as long. I can't help but wonder how much more fascinating information was in the 400,000 or so words that had to be pared to prepare this book for publication. In the Irish Times, "Price of Desire" director Mary McGuckian says "Eileen Gray: Her Work & Her World" is "as much a must-have addition to any coffee-table collection as a definitive biography." Excellent and important as this book is, however -- and with the greatest respect for Ms McGuckian and her films -- the above is why I can't entirely agree. "Her Work" may never be better contextualized, and "Her World" is far better situated now, thanks to Jennifer Goff's groundbreaking and essential efforts. But the unadorned "Her" could have used just a bit more focused attention, I think, to make this a truly definitive personal biography.Nevertheless, this is without question a five-star title. My hat is off to Jennifer Goff as a researcher, curator, and presenter, not only of art, but of information.

Best Ebook PDF When Darkness Reigned And Light Was Barely Visible: Reflections on WWII , by The Son and Grandson of a Holocaust Survivor, by David Heller

When Darkness Reigned And Light Was Barely Visible is a thoughtful reflection on the Second World War, through the lens of the son and grandson of a Wwii survivor. The grandfather, Marcus Heller, was nineteen, Jewish and living in Poland when the war ignited in 1939. He lost his entire family during the war, but found his way to Russia and the Russian army and was at the Battle of Stalingrad, among others. His journey inspired this book of reflections by his immediatedescendants. Following an overview of how vast and horrendous atrocities were in World War Ii, and the incomparable scope of the carnage, this compendium is divided into both the psychological and spiritual implications of the war. While the book focuses more substantially on the war in Europe, it does include many references to the Pacific theatre and the global nature of the war. Its main purpose, and the intention of the authors, is to ask what can be learned -- about human nature and the human condition, and about our relationship to the idea of God and moral and ethical principles. Here are a few of the hundreds of psychological and spiritual reflections on the war, with an eye toward arousing in readers their own feelings and views: “Children will always wonder why people can be cruel, and we are compelled to tell them there is no single answer.” “People can endure horrible challenges and still be resilient. They can not only endure these challenges, but it is possible to prevail over them.” “Good and evil are not based in a particular religion, culture or country. They wear the uniforms that suit them, sometimes changing over time. And sometimes they are camouflaged in disguises. It may be easy to spot evil in an Ss uniform, but not as simple a task when evil is cloaked in religious cloth or civilian clothes or any uniform worn falsely as a benevolent impersonation.”

A Unique, Personal Approach to the Darkest Time in Recent History By Tobi Marshall This book does an excellent job of capturing the tragedies involved in the darkest days of human history -- the Holocaust and the massacre of millions of innocent men, women and children. The fact that it is written by the son and grandson of a Holocaust survivor -- and not just by someone who approaches the topic from a cold, academic viewpoint -- makes the book all that more meaningful and relevant. It is a book that is "easy" to read for all ages -- easy in the sense of the required reading skills -- but difficult to read from an emotional point of view. The dedication to the authors' father/grandfather is very moving and makes the reflections expressed by these authors in the book all that much more real and close to home. For them, this period of history is not just something they have read in history books but, rather, something they have grown up with (and been affected by) throughout their lives. It is said that the Jewish book of the Haggadah should be read so that the readers feel on an emotional level as if they had actually been slaves in Egypt. This book should be read so that the readers feel on an emotional level -- through the thoughts of descendants of a survivor -- the tragedy of the events that occurred "when darkness reigned and light was barely visible."

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Book is great launching point for discussion about the moral implications of World War II By Momx2 Part I of this book powerfully states well known and less well known facts about the atrocities committed by the Nazis, Japanese and Russians. Part II consists of 259 moral, philosophical, and practical reflections on what happened and what it means today. It culminates in a powerful affirmation of the meaning of life entitled "This Is Our Inheritance." Each of these reflections could trigger interesting classroom discussions or discussions between parent and child. I hope this book will be widely used in schools.

Hope comes from the stories, as well as an imperative that history not be forgot By David Johns The method used by the Hellers of stating facts and letting these facts speak helps the reader deal with the atrocities without invoking the mind's need to shut down for self-protection. The facts and numbers add up and allow the reader an answer that is real and comprehensible even though the incidents are incomprehensible.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Another good read from Nuttall... By David P. Graf Once again, Nuttall delivers a good read which is only disappointing in that it has to eventually come to an end. He tells the "origin" story of Edward Stalker who figures prominently in other books in the "The Empire's Corps" series. He tells of his early life, the death of his family and his journey to become a Marine through basic training leading to the "Slaughterhouse" through his first deployment. If you are looking for a "John Wayne" view of the military and their role, this book is not for you. Nuttall is too well acquainted with the complexities that accompany the duties of those in the military to either sugar coat their experiences or dumb them down unlike some other "bang-bang, boom-boom" authors.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Riveting Story By Amazon Customer I just finished the story as of five minutes ago. I wanted to let you know that as a marine I loved the tale. I was an 0311 infantry marine and although there isn't a "slaughter house", the concept of blood sweat anger sadness irritation and barely hanging on as well as the exhaustion post crucible brought back a lot of memories. I guess I just wanted to congratulate you on creating a book that a marine can relate to.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Futility By Roger The Rhino Ross Chris nails it. A dystopian society with a last bastion of honor. I didn't want to read a prequel - I wanted the next in the series. But, he made me step back and consider today. Rat bastard.Chris has grown as an author and this book was powerful. And, unfortunately, he has left it open to another before he gets back to the meat of Empire Corps. So, I'm now left wondering about Stalker before/getting into OCS.Not a spoiler - Nutall is an evil genius (Bastard)

The Road To Helsinki is the history of how Europe stepped back from the brink of a third World War.

Victory in Europe was declared on May 8, 1945. On March 6, 1946, Winston Churchill delivered his famous “Iron Curtain” speech in Fulton, Missouri. It seemed that World War Ii had not ended. Europe moved immediately into a “Cold War”, with armed camps in a divided Europe; but this time with nuclear weapons. The Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe, signed on August 1, 1975, thirty years after Ve Day, has often been called “The Peace Treaty of World War Ii”. It was the harbinger of the reunification of Germany, the dissolution of the Soviet Union, and the expansion of the European Union and Nato. It is a history of great diplomacy and political courage, of great statesmen and politicians, on both sides of the Iron Curtain.

Check out his interviews on "The Alex Jones Show/Infowars." Of course his lectures on YouTube are heavily viewed and also must be pondered. I'd like to see some professionally done DVDs featuring the Professor; I'm sure hundreds of thousands of truth-seekers would agree. Do support Professor Griff. He represents all that is good about the human quest for knowledge and wisdom. Professor Griff and others like him will help liberate humanity. Closer to home, his contributions have been pivotal in the mass awakening that has gripped the USA. Professor Griff is a humanist whose deeds are a positive sign that We the People will win back the American republic from the foreign offshore globalist banking families.

By Natalie Williams The Story of a Candy Rabbit is a funny picture eBook. This book have beautiful images. The story is simple enough, that after a few reads, my daughter should be able to tell me the story. That being said, the book is a fun way for parents and children to both participate in reading the story. The book was in great condition.

Dawn rises and banners catch the wind. The black lion sigils on crimson dance among forests of pikes above the might of a kingdom. Between Ryga's army and the once proud capital, the landscape churns with a sea of the risen dead. Fouler things beyond have held the city captive and unleashed horrors within. The time has come to free Doln and face whatever nightmares their enemy has called forth from the pits of the underworld, or fall to darkness and become slaves to their twisted wills. Steel, sorcery, and blood will decide. By February 1862 Confederate forces in Kentucky and Tennessee were falling back in disorder. Fort Henry on the Tennessee River and Fort Donelson on the Cumberland River fell to combined land and naval forces under Brigadier General Ulysses S. Grant and Flag Officer Andrew H. Foote. These losses necessitated the abandonment of the Rebel stronghold of Columbus, Kentucky. The entire upper Mississippi Valley lay open to Federal invasion. Toward that end, a new Union army under Major General John Pope began organizing at Commerce, Missouri.Confederate Major General John P. McCown was sent to plug the breach by fortifying Island No. 10, a one-mile-long island positioned in a bend in the Mississippi River that straddled the boundaries of Tennessee, Missouri, and Kentucky. Pope's army had to be held in check long enough for the main Confederate force, under generals Albert Sidney Johnston and P. G. T. Beauregard, to concentrate and launch a counterattack against Grant's advancing army.

The ensuing campaign at Island No. 10 created the first extensive siege of the Civil War. The ultimate capture of the garrison resulted in a new army command for Pope in Virginia. As for the Confederates, the campaign pointed to a faulty western strategy. Simply to concede the rivers and their adjoining cities to the Federal navy was politically unacceptable. Garrison after garrison was captured, however, in the attempt to defend the rivers to the last extremity. Between February 1862 and July 1863 the Confederates lost 64,400 troops, some nine divisions, in defending the rivers. This strategy was a significant contributing factor for Confederate defeat in the West.

Review "A major new study that highlights one of the opening campaigns for control of the Mississippi Valley, and indispensable for understanding Union army-navy operations in the West."—B. Franklin Cooling, Historian, U.S. Department of Energy"The scholarship is sound and thorough. This book will be useful to historians of the Civil War who wish to draw on it for an authoritative account of this campaign, and Civil War buffs will want it in their libraries."—James M. McPherson, Princeton University

From the Back Cover In 1862 Island No. 10, so named because it was the tenth island south of the junction of the Ohio River with the Mississippi River at Cairo, Illinois, was a natural fortress approximately 1 mile long and 450 yards wide, sitting at about 10 ft above low water in the middle of the channel and straddling the boundaries of the states of Tennessee, Missouri, and Kentucky. It was an ideal site from which Confederates could maintain control of the rivers to the West. But in March and early April of that year, the combined Union army and navy launched a campaign for command of Island No. 10, which became the site of the first extensive siege of the Civil War.

It happens off to the East if you are reading about the Trans-Mississippi. It happens off the West when you are reading a book on Shiloh. When you read about Forts Henry & Donelson, they clear the way for it to happen and it had to happen to allow the Vicksburg Campaign. If you read about the 1862 campaigns in Virginia, Island No. 10 makes Pope into McClellan's chief rival. Setting up all the questions about Second Manassas and did or did not the AOP with hold troops allowing Pope to be defeated. In 1862, Island No. 10 is one event that seems to be included in every story but is not important enough to be a story. We all know about it but we lack knowledge of the campaign falling into the always their but never central to the story. With no large battles or star players, it is easy to see how this happened. Pope's reputation is destroyed in six months and Foote dies within a year canceling the Union leaders. The Confederacy never commits a major player to the defense of the island. After surrendering, reputations destroyed; captured and imprisoned the commanders are relegated to minor positions when exchanged. This small book covers the actions of both sides as they struggle for control of a critical position on the Mississippi River. Island No. 10 is the tenth island south of the Ohio River and a key defensive position in stopping the northern advance from Cairo. Generals Polk, AS Johnston and Beauregard all had other things on their mind and the island was never a primary position. We are given an excellent but concise understand of the "bigger issues" caused this to happen. When Union General Pope took New Madrid, he cut the position off from most river traffic. Flag Officer Andrew Foote with ironclads and mortar ships launched a prolonged bombardment. Each side builds and abandons positions on the river, conducts raids and endures the boredom of siege operations. The reader gets a good understand of the move counter move of constant action. The book's maps keep the positions clear, while photos and illustrations give us the feel of history unfolding. The infighting between the armies and navies is a piece of ACW history seldom seen. The Confederate commander would not risk his ships wanting to save his ships for use in defending New Orleans. The Union commander was convinced his ironclads were all that stopped Confederate control of the Mississippi. The Confederate ships fled as Pope tightens control below the island and Foote faced with increasing pressure and near mutiny allowed a couple of ironclads to run past the defenses. The Union City series ironclads, weak by later standards, were the decisive weapon in 1862. We see that here, as they are able to defeat anything the CSA can throw at them. Reading this book, helps us to understand the CSA's withdrawal to Corinth and the thinking behind the attack at Shiloh.Larry J. Daniel is one of our better authors and Lynn Bock complements his style producing a readable informative book that is fun to read.

Fitzgerald In 1862 Island No. 10, so named because it was the tenth island south of the junction of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers at Cairo, Illinois, was a natural fortress 1 mile long and 450 yards wide. It was shallow, 10 feet above low water, in the middle of the channel, and straddled the boundaries of the states of Tennessee, Kentucky and Missouri. It was an ideal site from which the Confederates could maintain control of both rivers, effectively choking all northern river traffic and thus the export of all Union production north of these rivers as far east as today's West Virginia. It was a critical site indeed. But in March and early April of 1862, the combined Union army and navy launched a campaign for command of the Island No. 10, which became the site of the first extensive seige of the Civil War. Success here launched the elevation of General John Pope to command of the Army of the Potomac and set the stage for the Union's subsequent disaster at second Manassas. But this engagement also demonstrated the strength of Union control in the Mississippi River Valley and set the stage for the Union's ultimate triumph at Vicksburg and the opening of the Mississippi River system over a year later. An often mentioned yet overlooked Mississippi River battle, Larry J. Daniel and Lynn N. Bock render an excellent analysis of this key, early Civil War Union victory.

The Forgotten Campaign Revealed By CTS 2631 Until I read this book the campaign for Island Number 10 was always a side show to whatever other campaign I was reading about. This short volume by Larry J. Daniel and Lynn N. Bock describes in detail the Union Campaign to open the upper Mississippi in early 1862. The overland campaign led by Union General John Pope to capture New Madrid, Missouri, downriver from Island Number 10, and Flag Officer Andrew Foote's naval campaign to lay seige to the Island are thoroughly explained without getting too bogged down in the details, as well as the final combined push to capture the Confederate forts and garrison. The history is told from both sides of the campaign with equal attention to the leaders, soldiers and sailors, and civilians on both sides. I liked the writing style and it was easy to keep track of all the action and principal players. This is the only volume I could find on this campaign and I was not disappointed. I enjoyed reading it, learned a lot of things I didnt know and got a better understanding of things I wasnt too sure about. (like how John Pope got so much notoriety that he ended up getting shipped to Virginia to command a Union army that got thrashed by Lee) The maps are good. Lots of pictures and illustrations. This is a must have volume for understanding one of the opening moves in the campaign to open the Mississippi. Highly reccomended.

This book contains proven steps and strategies on how to enhance your photographs using one of the most popular and most user-friendly software in the market, Photoshop.

One of the most common misconceptions about Photoshop is that it’s a way for photographers to cheat. It just might be, but you should understand as well that even the most sophisticated camera has its limitations. What we see with our eyes cannot be fully captured by any man-made device. The essence of a sunset over the sea, the serenity of a silent mountain, or the grandeur of a rushing river – these sceneries’ ambiences and emotions will come out bland and lacking when printed.

Even professionals exert more effort and time to make their shots more stunning. We all need these great techniques to create a superb image of people, landscapes, and other interesting subjects. We will be able to create professional looking shots more than a camera can capture. However, we still need to use and have a nice or professional camera like DSLR to make it work better and easier. Simple digital cameras have smaller resolution and lower quality that makes our job more difficult.Overall, it's a nice book with easy to follow steps but takes a lot of time to finish a great looking image. Also, sample of edited shots really are stunning. But there are some that I would prefer the original shot because the edited versions do not look like realistic anymore. Some just needs a little adjustment on color and lighting and need not overuse the blurring.

I am just so glad what this application is capable of. As a beginner to this application, I am impressed how this book guide me in applying such enhancements to my pictures. This book explains explicitly how to use every technique on this application. Moreover, this book has illustrations that will help the reader appreciate the effects done by photoshop. I am so amazed on what I have done to my pictures and I am sure I will read this book again to learn further these simple tricks.

In many histories 1915 is the forgotten year of the First World War. Yet it saw the British and the French make repeated attempts to find methods that would break the stalemate that had existed since the end of First Ypres in the winter of 1914. These attempts to break through the German lines culminated in what to the British was the Battle of Loos, the largest deployment of the British Army so far in this war. At this stage the British were, on land, the junior partner in a coalition, and in the greater scheme of things, Loos was but a minor distraction in a much larger strategy, but as part of the development of the British way of waging war it was hugely important. Loos saw the first use by the British of gas, a weapon banned in future conflicts, so terrible was it (erroneously) thought to be; the first use of the New Armies, Britain’s first truly citizen army, and the realization that it would be some time yet before they could be deployed with any confidence; and it was the final straw that led to the dismissal of Sir John French and his replacement by Sir Douglas Haig as Commander-in-Chief of the British Expeditionary Force. Gordon Corrigan uses contemporary accounts, war diaries and his own knowledge of the ground to chart the course of the battle, and assess the competence of commanders and the capabilities of men and equipment in what was, in many ways, the last hurrah of the old regular army. This is an important addition to the ongoing re-assessment of the First World War, and of the British Army’s part in it. Praise for Gordon Corrigan: ‘Political, fluent, well-researched and extremely argumentative’ – Andrew Roberts. 'Meticulously researched and well-written' Pennant Major Gordon Corrigan is a retired Gurkha officer, a member of the British Commission for Military History and Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society. Fluent in the Nepali language, he is now a freelance military historian and battlefield lecturer. He is a well known figure on the History channel. He is also the author of ‘Sepoys in the Trenches’ and ‘Wellington: A Military Life’. Endeavour Press is the UK’s leading independent publisher of digital books.

By David Ecale The author has an intimate knowledge of the lay of the land and the positioning of the troops on both sides. He also performs a very good narrative of the political decisions that led up to the battle, the battle itself, and the end results. Some points of note include:1) The battle was fought in order to support the northern flank of the French army as it prosecuted a major offensive2) The Loos area was a completely unsatisfactory place to hold a major assault due to the lay of the land3) The British were still learning about and perfecting the methods needed to carry an assault against an entrenched enemy to victory4) Thy were also still suffering from a lack of heavy guns (and the field guns were nearly useless in destroying deep emplacements)The net result was, perhaps, the highest overall troop battle casualty rates on a day-by-day basis that the British suffered during the whole war. (The first day of the Somme being higher in total casualties was quite a bit lower in the percentage of active combatants!) Additionally, the battle had the deleterious effect of wiping out almost all of the remaining Old Contemptibles. After this battle, almost all of the pre-war professional army officers and other ranks were gone. The next great battles would be fought with the New Armies in 1916.The book concludes with a summary of what ifs as well as an analysis of why it precipitated the removal of Sir John French from overall command and the promotion of Douglas Haig to that position.A small aside: This battle was one that the British fought as a political sop to the French. It was, perhaps, one of the best examples of what happens to exposed infantry when it is faced by a determined foe who is dug in, protected by acres of wire, and provided with ample machine guns and ammunition. It would take another three long and terrible years until the invention of armored vehicles and the ability to overcome wire and bridge trenches with them was perfected. (And, even then, it would take serious time before the generals figured out how to use them effectively.)

Meet Nick, an unhappy middle-aged New York City wise guy and erstwhile film critic looking for love and a new career. To leave his old life behind, Nick makes his boss an offer that he can’t refuse: the meal of a lifetime in return for quitting the business—no strings (or bullets) attached.

But Nick’s foolproof plan for leaving the family business begins to unravel when his boss’s wild dietary preferences prove more challenging than he’d anticipated. Throw in a dehydrated monkey, homicidal jungle foliage, a squeamish pulp-violence film director, and a love-interest leading her own confounding double-life, and Nick’s easy stroll into the sunset seems more like a jog through a minefield.

Nick is a complicated character who makes one mistake after another, and yet I could not help myself from rooting for him. This book is just the right combination of hope and despair. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

The subplots wove together extremely well (though, at first glance, I hadn't seen how they would). I enjoyed it as a crime novel, of course, but also particularly enjoyed the self-awareness of it, the commentary on the differences in filmmaking and viewer expectations between generations. That was an amusing little surprise.Silvis's prose is smooth yet thoughtful, and I moved quickly through the story. It's in the same family as Elmore Leonard's GET SHORTY / BE COOL. From the hardness of the East Coast to the shallowness of the West Coast to the Tennessee hills to the beautiful dangers of Costa Rica, the novel covers a lot of territory, and Silvis's rich description gives you strong sensory input without slowing the story.I particularly appreciated how underneath everything, Nick--like we all do--just wants to be loved, and when he has a chance to go for it, he goes to great (and hilariously, unnecessarily complicated) lengths to make it happen--poor Nick, never should have told his boss he'd do "anything" to retire. Biiiiig mistake!Highly recommended for a quick, enjoyable weekend read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A fun read! By Kim J., TX A fun read! Nick is unhappy. He hates New York and he is tired of working in the "family" business. When he goes to California to teach a lesson to someone who has crossed the family, he meets a woman and falls head over heels in love. This truly begins Nicks adventures. He must leave the family and leave them alive, so that he can be with the woman he loves. Foreign travel, jungle snakes and monkeys and man-eating plants, and the very, very odd piece of human anatomy that his boss wants to eat are all part of his escape plan. The adventures are fun and characters are well developed. The action is nonstop!

How much can a woman take without breaking down? A great lot more than ever imagined is what this book portrays. Most epics and, later, classical works of literature have women made to walk on fire, but Anuradha lives in a veritable inferno. At critical moments of despair and pain she is surprised by the array of strange personalities emerging from deep within her own self. In ways how unusual can a man love a woman? No one can say is what one will think after experiencing this saga. How selfish and cruel can intense love turn when spurned? As much as one finds in here. What does vengeance do to the person in his teens harboring it? And what all drives a mother to act in ways so bewildering in circumstances never faced before in human history?

About the Author C. Radhakrishnan is one of the most reputed living writers of Malayalam. A scientist-turned writer, he has contributed to all branches of creative literature, mostly fiction, besides popular science. He is widely read and well recognized. A prolific writer in Malayalam, he has to his credit more than seventy major works. He was given the Kerala Sahitya Akademi’s Annual Award for the Best Book in Malayalam during the year 1962 at the young age of 23, a record that stays. He has been recognized by India's National Akademi of Letters and almost every other body promoting creative literature of the language he writes. He was conferred the Murtidevi Award of the Bharatiya Gnanapith Trust for creative work in Indian languages. His works, deceptively simple and eminently readable, have been assessed to be creative contributions to the science-philosophy dialogue. He has done a commentary on Bhagavat Gita (Geetha Darsanam) critically approaching yogavidya in the light of modern science and, at the same time, also evaluating modern science vis-à-vis yogavidya. He helped launch and establish Science Today (Times of India), the first popular science magazine of India, at a young age of 24, and later held senior positions with national print media organs. He is a filmmaker too – two of his four creations form part of the Indian Panorama of Feature Films. His forays into astrophysics have enabled him to elaborate and provide fresh insights into the physical model of the universe. http://c-radhakrishnan.info

By VM A true page-turner set during the emergency in India, this story portrays the life of Anuradha, an unforgettable woman, whose life was made a living hell by the man who claimed to deeply and intensely love her. The Novelist takes us through Anuradha's heartbreak, her mental and physical agony, the horrible, nagging fear for her teenage son's life, the unbearable aches and cruelty that life piled upon her, well beyond an average person's imagination. Her threshold for pain is so high and she is strong, proud, unbending and yet full of love and compassion! Indeed it was the heart-rending times, and her story is heart-wrenching and tearful. The reader is left with a throbbing ache for this woman who is bigger than life itself. It is no wonder that the novelist, C. Radhakrishnan, with his unique writing style, has won numerous literary awards. "Heart-Rending Times" adds yet another colorful feather to this gifted author's cap.Kudos to Kairali Narayanan for her excellent translation and her dedication to bring this gem of a novel to the global market.Vanaja Menon

Radhakrishnan is a well known writer from India known for his deep and thought provoking works. Heart Rending Times is part of the Arjun trilogy collection of books, based on the socio-political climate of India at the time. The pain and suffering of a woman, Anuradha, and her emergence to a higher self, is portrayed in this novel. I carried this character in my heart for a long time, even after I finished reading the book, and that is what I like to read in a book. I am glad that Radhakrishnan's books are now available in English, so the whole world can enjoy them. I highly recommend Heart Rending Times for everyone to include in their reading list.

  • Includes excerpts from firsthand accounts of explorers and colonists associated with Roanoke and Jamestown.
  • Explains the relationship between John Smith and Pocahontas.
  • Discusses the theories and evidence about what happened to the lost colony.

Nearly 20 years before Jamestown was settled, the English established one of the earliest colonies in North America around the Chesapeake Bay region; the colony had over 100 inhabitants. Like other early settlements, Roanoke struggled to survive in its infancy, to the extent that the colony's leader, John White, sailed back to England in 1587 in an effort to bring more supplies and help. However, the attempts to bring back supplies were thwarted by the Spanish in the midst of the Anglo-Spanish War, and it was not until 1590 that White reached Roanoke again.

What White found when he came back to Roanoke led to one of the most enduring mysteries in American history. Despite the fact he left over 100 people in Roanoke in 1587, White returned to literally nothing, with all traces of the settlement gone and no evidence of fighting or anything else that might have explained the disappearance of the inhabitants. White found the word "Croatoan" carved on a tree nearby, which he figured might mean the colonists moved to a nearby island, but he was unable to conduct a search expedition there. The Spanish also searched for the colony in hopes of wiping it out themselves, but none of the Europeans could find Roanoke's colonists or explain what happened to the "lost" colony.

The fate of Roanoke has fascinated people for over 400 years, and there is no shortage of theories regarding the disappearance of the colony.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Brevity, clarity and a fascinating story By Will Hallahan This book is essentially about 'first encounters' and its scope is comparable to Tom Keneally's excellent 'Commonwealth of Thieves' about the first few years of the colony at Sydney. But one has to remember that the events described in this short but very well written work are from a long long time ago, from an age when medieval Europe had not quite gone to bed for a long sleep, and the modern world had not quite sprung out of bed for a rampage around the living room. And you get, from the first hand accounts of the English, that curious mix of medieval piety and wonder at the new, uncomfortably mixed with a modern self-confidence and sense of entitlement.Anyway, the mysteries of Roanoke are fascinating and the histories of Jamestown just feel important, and somehow set the stage for much else that ocurred in N America since. We can't pretend this is a comprehensive or thorough survey of the subject, but as an introduction to the key dates, people and decisions, its good.Recommended, obviously.

By Bill Anderson At 100 pages, this short book provides a much more detailed booklet than their normal booklet. The increased detail is useful in gaining a fundamental grasp of life during the time period and in one's desire to hypothesize the fate of the colonists.Could it be that, running low on food, the colonists chose to attempt colonizing a new area? Perhaps they created a raft, set sale but got swallowed up by a hurricane?Whatever happened, I believe there is no better book than Charles Rivers Editors's The Lost Colony of Roanoke and Jamestown from which a dedicated mystery fan can work to solve a great mystery.

Living close to Jamestown I wanted to know more of the history before visiting again. I felt this book has supplied me with a better understanding of the life of the colonists.I hope to one day see the presentation of The Lost Colony. This also gives insight into what might have happened to the colony. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it. It is a good history lesson.
