Since only one survived, it surely would have been a seeming miracle to those in the vicinity. As the story spread, it became apocryphal, steeped as it was in messianic and apocalyptic times. Given the overwhelming numbers of other coincidental episodes that link Josephus, the gospels, and the Essenes, Vermeiren's hypothesis about the retrograde chronology of Christian origins is completely plausible and fascinating to boot. A must read!
