By Kaizen: Systematic, Continuous, Objective Improvement/Realization. A.K.A. Science. in my case, since I DON'T know how those jazz phrases sound, I'm screwed. The front of the book makes it clear that a LOT is left out from written music notation, in Jazz style music, and that the timings/patterns are somewhat non-obvious, but then WHERE is one supposed to go to discover what the proper Jazz way sounds like???I got this to help train me up with the Doug Tipple PVC Irish Flute I got ( Bb, the "alto"-est one available, get keys on it, if you go with that, if your hands aren't spanning 10"+ naturally: the keys make all the difference in playability, but you gotta press 'em a little hard to get 'em to work right ... all in all that was an excellent investment in Flute-learning :)Anyways, now I'm going to have to find examples of the phrases, done by pros, and have you EVER tried searching for specific musical phrases in the intertubes???what search engine does that?-sigh-Mel Bay, your product's usefulness is damaged for us non-Jazzophiles, who just want to get good, and chose your book as the means...Cheers!

You'll learn a lot of jazz riffs and other important music theory concepts as they relate to jazz. I learned long ago that if a musician learns jazz, she can play any genre of music. This book is worth your money.

Included are jazz phrasing via the appropriate use of tonguing vs. legato playing (which I found particularly useful, being primarily a guitar player), a vast wealth of simple jazz-styled melodies that are easily translatable to licks; and a number of chromatic exercises that enhance the abiltity to play outside of simple diatonic phrases. It does assume some knowledge of jazz as a musical genre, either having listened to jazz extensively or, like myself, having a jazz background in another instrument.
