This book is designed to be useful for guitarists at any skill level. Beginners can use it as an introduction to the foundational concepts of the instrument, intermediate players can use it for training and theoretical work, and advanced players can explore the sections on advanced theory, extended technique and the exhaustive tables of melodic and rhythmic possibilities. It is divided into two parts: pitch and rhythm. Part 1 (pitch) begins with the properties of string, harmonics, and tuning systems. It then moves methodically through pitch information, beginning with locating all versions of a single pitch, building pentatonic, heptatonic, and all possible symmetrical scales. This is followed by a study of intervals, with all possible locations of every two pitches, and a long study that moves through every possible fingering of three pitches, with a series of exercises to master triadic syntax. Part 1 closes with a study of four-pitch structures and complete tables that show all possible pitch sets in circular visual notation. Part 2 (rhythm) begins with a complete course in "Symmetrical Picking," a method based on drum rudiments that builds control in the picking hand through an exhaustive variety of movements. The focus of this section is building a strong rhythmic foundation, with a focus on efficiency, accuracy, speed, dynamics, and groove. It is followed by a study of legato playing, working with ornaments and slides. The study of playing with fingers on multiple strings takes up the remainder of the book. This begins with the study of pulse against pulse, playing two simultaneous tempos. The book concludes with a study of polyrhythm, playing one rhythm against another. Plain English is used as much as possible to describe theoretical concepts, and hundreds of illustrations were made for the book as an aid to those who either don't speak English or prefer to think visually. This approach is designed to be inclusive and to promote creative practice. The main idea of the book is described in this passage (page 154): "Even in this small area there is a lot of material, potentially a lifetime of study. The amount of information can feel overwhelming to students at any level. For this reason, the book is designed for self-directed practice, with an emphasis on what the player "could" do, rather than what the player "should" do. The principle is to develop your own learning process, rather than following someone else?s. The ability to make choices is essential in finding a personal approach to the instrument. Pick and choose the studies that seem interesting - there should be enough variety to accommodate a wide range of personalities. If any particular concept or exercise has been useful as the starting point for a new creative direction, then the book has done its job. Its purpose is not to push any dogma, method, or style, but to open the door to options for guitarists of any background that are looking for new perspectives. For more information, visit: fundamentalsofguitar.com

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. but very highly recommended for anyone who is serious about studying the fundamentals ... By George Remarkable and very thorough book on the most fundamental aspects of music on the guitar for improvisors and composers. Not for the casual beginner, but very highly recommended for anyone who is serious about studying the fundamentals of music on the guitar -- challenging and rewarding work for all levels of players! There is a bit of info on technique, but this book mainly focuses on finding basic elements of harmony, melody, and rhythm (not all of it basic -- very thorough indeed). Miles uses beautiful graphics that, once you understand them, show many elements of harmony and melody and rhythm at a glance. Also for guitarists (and really any improvising musician) looking to connect traditional harmony to chromatic harmony and 12 tone techniques, Miles' graphics can be a wonderful aid (also works well as a visual aid to John O'Gallagher's book "Twelve Tone Improvisation").

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Excellent workbook, reference. Beyond guitar. Beyond style By Andres I write this review as someone who feels considerably satisfied with their gear & as someone with a rich library of music ( harmony, theory, jazz ) & more specifically guitar (reference and technique focused) literature - the " usual suspects " & hard to find weirdo why bother out of print material as well .In the passed , I've taught an enviable student load out of a small shop & attended numerous workshops, master classes ...along with studying privately with many a " badass ".I attempt to qualify myself here not for the sake of appearing like a good musician but as a judicious and seasoned consumer of music education material- who is well passed the point of thinking some app or handgrippy excercise device or stone pick or amp or guitar is going to solve my problem or " take me to the next level.Essentially, I know enough to know what is superfluous and what is the WORK and experience needed to grow... I really did not need another guitar book.I made the exception, and purchased Mr. Okazaki's book based on his playing and music, information from his site, the musical company he keeps and the musical company that keeps him. This book is a highly valuable resource and should also be shot into space to show off to other life forms how rad we can potentially be at times. The diagrams are so well designed and presented, communicating simple/complex ideas in a very intuitive and approachable manner- beyond spoken language; presenting what you've known all along in the most clear way you'll ever see and/or dangling the carrot towards pushing yourself to digest the work that is ahead of you. Things that were intriguiging as one offs were finally set in a context within an array of a larger organized system, for the purpose of embarking on understanding rather than marveling at only one aspect in a static manner. It goes with out saying that information like this goes beyond a style of music and moreover beyond guitar alone. If you are a spazz who doesn't know how / what to practice , there are excercises to follow or suggestions for ways to explore the material or generate excercises for yourself - again , not just reference. If my bookshelf were to be organized by " value " , I would place this book flanked on one side by ALL the Ted Greene books ( but not before slipping in The Advancing Guitarist by Mick Goodrick ) on one side and all 3 Harmonic Mechanisms books by George VanEpps on the other side...In short, each time I open this book it just gets cheaper.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fundamental topic, but highly advanced explanations By Steve B. The topics are fundamental, but the explanations are far from it, definitely not a book for beginners. The diagrams are very confusing and I think more use of notation would make some of the explanation easier to understand. I gave it four star because I feel there is some great info in this book, but it's not going to be easy to get out.

The Spanish began to settle New Mexico in the sixteenth century, and although scholars have long known the names of those settlers, this is the first book to place the colonists on the map. Using documentary, genealogical, and archaeological sources, Elinore M. Barrett depicts the settlement patterns of Spaniards in New Mexico from the beginning of colonization in 1598 up to 1680, when the Pueblo Revolt forced the colonists to retreat for a time.

Barrett describes the natural environment and the Pueblo villages that the Spanish colonists encountered, as well as the activities of the Spanish civil and religious establishments related to land, labor, and tribute and the mission and mining landscapes the colonists created. She also recounts the founding and settling of Santa Fe and analyzes demographic dynamics, adding a new dimension to studies of the colonial Southwest.

I guess I wasn't sure what to expect from a book that covers 1598-1680. So many documents have been lost, but yet we find ways to fill in the gaps with what we do have. It appears that the book is regionally and filled with lists. The author to me feels like she is trying to determine how many families, soldiers, men, etc., were living in New Mexico for this time period. She has some very credible sources, I only wished they were more primary sources and not all secondary which have been out for a long time.It does start out with weather patterns, drought, living by the rivers and settlements. I did like the Appendix which is like 65 pages long, which has maps, lists of soldiers, lists of families, and more lists. I think people will appreciate them as they are where I started reading the book, from the back.Nice notes, bibliography and super index. If it comes out in paperback, I would buy one so that I could write notes in the margin, something I won't do in a hardback.

Barrett, The Spanish Colonial Landscapes of New Mexico, 1598-1680 By Bee This is a GREAT book for anyone interested in the early colonist families of pre-revolt and returning, post-revolt New Mexico. The gem of this book are excerpts from a post-revolt survey expedition of settlements and estancias. There are also maps of the period, military muster rolls, tables of familes, etc.

15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. "that terrible fellow Filson Young" By Susan Paxton This is one of the Naval Institute's great "Classics of Naval Literature" series. Filson Young was a British journalist who before World War One had briefly spent time aboard Admiral Sir David Beatty's flagship HMS Lion and who, when war came in 1914, decided that he wanted to serve with Beatty, a man who attracted hero-worship in much the same way as Nelson. Fortunately for Young, he knew Admiral Sir John Fisher, the remarkable architect of the dreadnought fleet, well and when Fisher, reappointed to the Admiralty as First Sea Lord, sent him a letter ("I am exceeding busy scrapping parasites" Fisher wrote, typically), Young promptly went to London to see him. Young wrangled a commission in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve as a lieutenant, and with Fisher's connivance, was assigned to Beatty's flagship, partly, one suspects, because Fisher wanted publicity for the Navy, and partly so Fisher could keep an eye on Beatty (to his credit Young promptly told Beatty that Fisher had asked him to write often and Beatty made use of Young as a conduit of information directly to the Admiralty). Beatty appears not to have been entirely pleased to have Young around ("...that terrible fellow Filson Young has worked his way and he has been appointed to the Lion for special service" the admiral wrote his wife), but appears to have found him an agreeable addition to his staff. Young's portraits of life aboard the battlecruisers are often wonderful; his chapter "Days With the Fleet" brings back to life a thoroughly lost era. As a non-sailor his observations are particularly valuable because he discusses things sailors would take for granted. Young fortunately served at the Battle of Dogger Bank; unfortunately he was out of the Navy before Jutland and so we have lost a useful witness to that greatest of naval battles. "With the Battle Cruisers" is edited by James Goldrick, who contributes a forward and valuable notes. Anyone interested in the naval history of the First World War will find this a necessary addition to their collection.

The Battlecrusiers Through the Eyes of a Man Who was There By I.W.MacDonald This outstanding book takes the reader back to the early days of WW1 and the British Navy's battle cruiser force. The book provides an excellent and often poignant look at life in these beautiful ships of war and additionally, provides some very useful insights into the roles and personalities of some of the eras great leaders and commanders. This book is an absolute must for anyone with an interest in the Royal Navy during WW1.

This book is a very practical and simple guide to plan and carry out a camp without any inconvenience. The tips are basic but most of us do not know them. Spectacular exchange ceremonies involving hundreds of dancers festooned with elaborate body adornments – including highly prized bird of paradise plumes and the revered kina, or pearlshell – is something for which the peoples of the New Guinea highlands are renowned.Appreciating the sophistication and sheer beauty of these adornments, Stanley Gordon Moriarty assembled one of the finest collections including exquisitely constructed headdresses, arm- and leg-bands, ear- and nose-rings and necklaces, made of feathers, shell, bark cloth, animal and plant fibres and natural pigments. This book presents highlights from this extraordinary collection, now held by the Gallery, as well as other superb pieces used in rituals, war and daily life such as rare gourd masks, painted shields, carved spears, woven and carved figures, textiles and dance masks.

In it, we enter the self-absorbed world of Kurt Jones, who is haunted by his past and unrealistically looking forward to his future. College is Kurt's playground and everyone and everything in it he uses for his own warped pleasure. Eventually he meets the incredibly perfect girl for him. But she comes with her own secrets and mysteries. This is a psychological exploration of the stories we tell ourselves while we search for our place in life.

The Columbarium is the backdrop for peering into the eccentric lives of some of the dead, as well as of the people they left behind. Jed, a Jonestown survivor, takes a job fixing up the columbarium and ultimately comes to terms with his past and his own psychological demons. When the columbarium is vandalized, the mourners and Jed band together to preserve the memories of their loved ones, and in the process, they understand that belonging and connecting to others is what gives life meaning. A house for the dead becomes a venue for celebrating life.

Generally, my recreational reading consists of biography and autobiography delivered through ear buds. It was an unusual circumstance that would motivate me to actually sit down an read a novel. I purchased this one book out of approximately 300,000 published in the US this year because I have met Emily and have been a long time friend of her husband. I purchased this book as a sign of support, while hoping it would not be the kind of read the makes me constantly conscious that this is a book written by someone I know. As I read I went from pleasantly surprised, to proud to know the author and finally to immersion in the story. After I finished the reading the book I was left with the feeling that I hadn't felt in a long while. I actually missed the characters in the novel. I am looking forward to reading the prequel and the next installment of her work. Also, I will definitely be visiting the real Columbarium the next time I am in San Francisco.

I loved "Venice Beach" where it was impossible to ignore the mysteriously likable yet tainted character of Jed. In "The Columbarium", Jed becomes the focal character surrounded by Emily Gallo's signature cast of offbeat and compelling characters. Jed proves himself to be an underdog worthy of rooting for as he works hard, shows vision and interacts compassionately with the other castaways. The Columbarium setting of the book is fascinating unto itself and I found myself wondering if there were "vacancies" in this esteemed San Francisco final resting place. Emily Gallo creates a lively and satisfying read in this new novel. I wonder which character will be the focal point in the next sequel to a blossoming series of delightful novels.

I couldn't put it down. The plot was very easy to follow, and the characters were very real. Being Jewish, I especially was able to relate to the Jewish foods, Jewish customs, and Yiddish expressions mentioned in the story.Although I consider myself a slow reader, I finished it in one day. I highly recommend, "Venice Beach" and this sequel, The Columbarium". Emily Gallo is an excellent writer and I look forward to reading her next novel.

The unconventional but at the same time recognizable trials of a slightly dysfunctional family are served up with humour and compassion. I enjoyed meeting the characters and found myself rooting for them to have a happy ending. As the plot unfolded and interlinked with the historical back-story, I became more and more keen to understand all that had happened in the past to bring the characters to their present positions.A great read which got me involved from the outset. I look forward to catching up with the characters in a future novel.

Delightful read By Langa My This book is a delightful first novel - interesting storyline, wonderful imagery (the way the author puts her descriptions is so imaginative and slightly kooky that this was one of my favourite aspects - it regularly made me giggle with recognition), well developed characters who feel like real people. Ms Goa has a way with words that makes you feel the highs and lows as though you are actually there.I devoured it in a weekend, and would recommend it to anyone - and have, in fact, recommended it to pretty much everyone I know who enjoys reading.

A story of immigrants and hard times By Phil Garnock-Jones This is a wonderful novel that weaves between the present and the past to tell a story of a family's integration into US & Canadian life during the depression, with present day characters and their complex lives also intimately involved. It's funny, passionate, insightful, and warm. If I have any criticism, it's for stories that are told in the present tense, but I soon adjusted to that because this is a story that draws you into itself. I thoroughly recommend it.

Ebook PDF Famille sans nom (Edition Intégrale - Version Entièrement Illustrée) (French Edition), by Jules Verne

Famille sans nom (Edition Intégrale - Version Entièrement Illustrée) (French Edition), by Jules Verne

Gale I have roots in Newfoundland and have spent several vacations in St. John's and Brigus. There is a naval officers' club in St. John's called the Crow's Nest that as existed since 1939 when Canada entered the war of which I am a proud member. This club is dedicated to the escort officers that ushered the eastbound convoys to England. St. John's was the main western Atlantic port for the escorts of the trans Atlantic convoys during World War II. I was totally unaware of how St. John's was built up as such a port and also that there were 4 governments involved in it's establishment Canada, England, U.S. and Newfondland which at that time was a separate dominion and not part of Canada. How 4 governments actually accomplished this feat is the story told in "The Newfyjohn Solution". An absolutely incredible piece of history and I highly recommend it to any fan of World War II history and the Battle of the Antlantic. If you are ever in St John's be sure to visit the Crow's Nest!!

Sara's Year, by Mark David Gerson

Review "I have always felt that literature is there for two reasons: to give us a chance to look at others' lives and to teach us something. Sara's Year does both and it does so with great style. I did not want this book to end; when it did, I started reading it again."- Reviews by Amos Lassen"Gerson is a superb story teller with a flair for flowing dialogue. Although I had figured out many of the book's surprises, I still could not put it down. The story just rips along and at the end, Gerson still managed to throw me off with some things that I never expected or anticipated."- Bernard Mendelman, The Suburban, Montreal

AGAIN!This book couldn't have come at a more perfect time in my life. I was struggling with the creative issues so beautifully illustrated by Sara's Year- who among us hasn't?Sara's Year goes right to the core of living our lives creatively, passionately, and authentically as human beings. Are we making excuses to avoid living naked as we expose ourselves creatively, most vulnerably? Sara's got something to say about this in her hard earned tenure. The question is, can she walk the talk...Or will she die having never fully lived... That's for you to find out!Sara's Year is my story too. At different stages of my life – and more so now than ever – I find myself in some aspect as each and every one of the characters poetically brought to life and illustrated by Gerson. You will undeniably be on the edge of your seat as Gerson's cliffhanger's, twists, and turns leave you shedding tears of sorrow and joy, longing for the next morsel of adventure and life.Reading Sara's Year was not only a heartfelt joy, it was the perfectly gentle nudge to keep moving forward and taking more daring creative steps in my own life.Gerson's theme is "Positive Inspiration At It's Best" and he has more than earned the right to claim this. He lives it. And that's exactly what Sara's Year is!Thank you Mark David for another priceless gem! You are such an inspiration and beautiful expression of a life lived passionately, creatively, and authentically!

By Carolyn Flower From Chapter One, Page One of "Sara’s Year", I knew I was to embark on a wonderfully emotional journey with a brilliant cast of characters! Each scene was masterfully painted in prose by author Mark David Gerson, and I felt as if the story’s characters were family “already”. What an adventure we’re on as Sara( h) invites us to share in her time-woven memories and more significantly, her dreams that might have been left unfulfilled. She proves that life-long love and friendship is real, and that our past can collide with our present to create a future of wonder, if only we believe in ourselves, and have faith in what was meant to be all along; “bashert”.Carolyn Flower - international bestselling author of "Gravitate 2 Gratitude - Journal Your Journey"

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. captivating story By Robin E Mason When your life derails and your plans crash and burn before your eyes, what is there to do? You put one foot in front of the other and wake up every day with the life you’ve got, the life you’ve been given. And those dreams you used to dream, those plans you made so long ago? Are they dead and buried, or do they lie dormant, awaiting the clarion call, “It’s time. Now is the time.” Synchronicity plays a significant role in Sara’s story. Threads from various sources and different times weave together to weave make this tapestry-story.syn·chro·nic·i·ty ˌsiNGkrəˈnisədē/ noun1. the simultaneous occurrence of events that appear significantly related but have no discernible causal connection. Sara has known Bernie since the day he was born; she and his mother were life-long best friends. As Bernie walks away from his mother’s funeral, he leaves behind not only the Jewish shiva but unknowingly walks into a new life. Memories – Sara’s – mingle with reminiscences of Esther as both Bernie and Sara talk out their grief, and regret. Esther speaks from the grave, it seems, urging them both to seek out their dreams, to breathe life into them, and to follow their hearts. Does Bernie embrace the revelations Sara shares with him? Can he accept the self-discoveries he makes in his grief-borne wandering? Will Sara pick up her pen, and be who she always wanted to be? While the bulk of the story takes place over only a few days, the memories shared take the reader back fifty years, to the then-young and aspiring Esther and Sarah. What, then, is the year that is Sara’s Year? What makes the year so significant and life changing? Which begs the question, what synchronicities in my life have made a year or a day or a week significant and life changing? I should be an old Jewish woman? I should have a Bernie or an Esther stirring my dreams? The ultimate question is, have I picked heeded the clarion call in my own life? Have I owned the dream placed within me from the beginning of time? Why yes, yes I have. Because it truly is never too late to follow my dreams, wherever they may take me. Mr. Gerson had created a vivid story world in which this reader readily entered. Relatable characters gave depth and dimension to Sara’s Year, making it a favorite read of this reviewer.#markdavidgerson, #sarasyear, #nevertoolate, #followyourdreams, #synchronicity

In his latest literary thriller, David Armand weaves together the stories of an eccentric cast of dark, frighteningly realist characters, each under suspicion of murdering a young girl, Amber Varnado, whose body is found hidden in a deep gorge at the opening of the novel. Set in southeast Louisiana in the small town of Franklinton, The Gorge follows the colliding lives of Tuller, the murdered girl's boyfriend, whose suspicious past and his discovery of Amber's body make him the prime suspect; John Varnado, Amber's father, a Vietnam war veteran whose violent flashbacks cause brutal outbursts of rage and paranoia; Grady, a young man dwarfed by rickets who prowls the night to feed his strange desires; and Euwell, a man who lives in an old shack near the gorge and hunts for young girls to satisfy his lusts and quell his inner-demons. Armand's spellbinding story explores the universal themes of desperate love and the pitfalls of false assumptions woven into the tenuous threads of coincidence that connect people in a small town. Masterful, profound, and full of spirit, The Gorge is literary entertainment of the highest order

The Gorge, by David Armand

Review David Armand is an exceptionally talented young writer that I've had my eye on for a while. His new novel, The Gorge, is a suspenseful tale filled with intrigue and surprises, and he knows his characters inside out, just as he knows the sights, sounds, and smells of the landscape in which their drama is enacted. I really admired this book. --Steve Yarbrough, author of The Realm of Last Chances and Safe From the NeighborsThough original in plot and conception, The Gorge shows the clear influence of Larry Brown and Cormac McCarthy in Armand's creation of genuinely evolved Rough South characters. Grady Bickels emerges, for example, as an even more grotesque version of Lester Ballard from Child of God. Armand's direct and poetic use of language is quite impressive. --Jean W. Cash, author of Flannery O Connor A Life and Larry Brown: A Writer s LifeLarry Brown meets Tom Franklin in The Gorge, a haunting story that delivers readers a strong sting of southern grit lit. With just the right balance of dark, edgy, raw, and all things lyrical, David Armand dives deep into the sweat-soaked secrets and sins of rural Louisiana. Get ready to enter into the minds of characters you would never want to know in real life, but probably already do. --Julie Cantrell, New York Times bestselling author of The Feathered Bone

Great if you love Rough South, Grit Lit, Thrillers, or Literary Novels By Jennifer Geist A well-written entry into the relatively new genre of Rough South, The Gorge is a frighteningly beautiful portrait of a Southern Louisiana town full of interconnected individuals. The story follows multiple characters: Tuller, the prime suspect in his girlfriend's murder; Grady, a strange man plagued by rickets and desires; Euwell, a man whose past compels him to hurt as he was hurt. Not only a thriller, but also a literary novel, its prose will simultaneously compel you to read as quickly as possible to discover the conclusion, but also force you to linger on and appreciate well-crafted lines.Unlike some stories, which have good and evil clearly defined, The Gorge forces you to pity and empathize with even the most twisted of individuals.David Armand is surely an author to watch, if his past novels and this one are any indication.

I closed the book and left the gorge, but I know that it will never leave me. It is a stunning tale, well told, with some twisted characters that I cared too much about, because David Armand made me feel the pain of every person in this gripping story. He jarred my ego awake to that universal truth; that there but for the Grace of God, go I. David nailed it when he wrote,"...people who have been hurt and who,in turn, hurt others. But isn't that all of us?".David Armand has two more books coming out soon. The next one will be out in April, 2016, and I understand that he has also just started writing a new novel. I am anxiously awaiting the release of the new books by this brilliant young writer.

By Southern Reader David Armand's third novel, The Gorge, draws the reader into a world of dark intrigues, a world populated by desperate and grotesque figures—juxtaposed to youth and beauty and eternal hope. The story hinges on the death of a young girl and a cast of suspects whose shady backgrounds weave a web of suspicion. Set in the flat Louisiana delta, the gorge itself is an anomaly in the local geography, a metaphor—the ideal locale for a good mystery. The Gorge may fall into the contemporary “grit lit” genre, but the voice and style bear the unique and indelible signature of its author. A great read!
