The Spanish began to settle New Mexico in the sixteenth century, and although scholars have long known the names of those settlers, this is the first book to place the colonists on the map. Using documentary, genealogical, and archaeological sources, Elinore M. Barrett depicts the settlement patterns of Spaniards in New Mexico from the beginning of colonization in 1598 up to 1680, when the Pueblo Revolt forced the colonists to retreat for a time.

Barrett describes the natural environment and the Pueblo villages that the Spanish colonists encountered, as well as the activities of the Spanish civil and religious establishments related to land, labor, and tribute and the mission and mining landscapes the colonists created. She also recounts the founding and settling of Santa Fe and analyzes demographic dynamics, adding a new dimension to studies of the colonial Southwest.

I guess I wasn't sure what to expect from a book that covers 1598-1680. So many documents have been lost, but yet we find ways to fill in the gaps with what we do have. It appears that the book is regionally and filled with lists. The author to me feels like she is trying to determine how many families, soldiers, men, etc., were living in New Mexico for this time period. She has some very credible sources, I only wished they were more primary sources and not all secondary which have been out for a long time.It does start out with weather patterns, drought, living by the rivers and settlements. I did like the Appendix which is like 65 pages long, which has maps, lists of soldiers, lists of families, and more lists. I think people will appreciate them as they are where I started reading the book, from the back.Nice notes, bibliography and super index. If it comes out in paperback, I would buy one so that I could write notes in the margin, something I won't do in a hardback.

Barrett, The Spanish Colonial Landscapes of New Mexico, 1598-1680 By Bee This is a GREAT book for anyone interested in the early colonist families of pre-revolt and returning, post-revolt New Mexico. The gem of this book are excerpts from a post-revolt survey expedition of settlements and estancias. There are also maps of the period, military muster rolls, tables of familes, etc.
