This book is designed to be useful for guitarists at any skill level. Beginners can use it as an introduction to the foundational concepts of the instrument, intermediate players can use it for training and theoretical work, and advanced players can explore the sections on advanced theory, extended technique and the exhaustive tables of melodic and rhythmic possibilities. It is divided into two parts: pitch and rhythm. Part 1 (pitch) begins with the properties of string, harmonics, and tuning systems. It then moves methodically through pitch information, beginning with locating all versions of a single pitch, building pentatonic, heptatonic, and all possible symmetrical scales. This is followed by a study of intervals, with all possible locations of every two pitches, and a long study that moves through every possible fingering of three pitches, with a series of exercises to master triadic syntax. Part 1 closes with a study of four-pitch structures and complete tables that show all possible pitch sets in circular visual notation. Part 2 (rhythm) begins with a complete course in "Symmetrical Picking," a method based on drum rudiments that builds control in the picking hand through an exhaustive variety of movements. The focus of this section is building a strong rhythmic foundation, with a focus on efficiency, accuracy, speed, dynamics, and groove. It is followed by a study of legato playing, working with ornaments and slides. The study of playing with fingers on multiple strings takes up the remainder of the book. This begins with the study of pulse against pulse, playing two simultaneous tempos. The book concludes with a study of polyrhythm, playing one rhythm against another. Plain English is used as much as possible to describe theoretical concepts, and hundreds of illustrations were made for the book as an aid to those who either don't speak English or prefer to think visually. This approach is designed to be inclusive and to promote creative practice. The main idea of the book is described in this passage (page 154): "Even in this small area there is a lot of material, potentially a lifetime of study. The amount of information can feel overwhelming to students at any level. For this reason, the book is designed for self-directed practice, with an emphasis on what the player "could" do, rather than what the player "should" do. The principle is to develop your own learning process, rather than following someone else?s. The ability to make choices is essential in finding a personal approach to the instrument. Pick and choose the studies that seem interesting - there should be enough variety to accommodate a wide range of personalities. If any particular concept or exercise has been useful as the starting point for a new creative direction, then the book has done its job. Its purpose is not to push any dogma, method, or style, but to open the door to options for guitarists of any background that are looking for new perspectives. For more information, visit: fundamentalsofguitar.com

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. but very highly recommended for anyone who is serious about studying the fundamentals ... By George Remarkable and very thorough book on the most fundamental aspects of music on the guitar for improvisors and composers. Not for the casual beginner, but very highly recommended for anyone who is serious about studying the fundamentals of music on the guitar -- challenging and rewarding work for all levels of players! There is a bit of info on technique, but this book mainly focuses on finding basic elements of harmony, melody, and rhythm (not all of it basic -- very thorough indeed). Miles uses beautiful graphics that, once you understand them, show many elements of harmony and melody and rhythm at a glance. Also for guitarists (and really any improvising musician) looking to connect traditional harmony to chromatic harmony and 12 tone techniques, Miles' graphics can be a wonderful aid (also works well as a visual aid to John O'Gallagher's book "Twelve Tone Improvisation").

Beyond style By Andres I write this review as someone who feels considerably satisfied with their gear & as someone with a rich library of music ( harmony, theory, jazz ) & more specifically guitar (reference and technique focused) literature - the " usual suspects " & hard to find weirdo why bother out of print material as well .In the passed , I've taught an enviable student load out of a small shop & attended numerous workshops, master classes ...along with studying privately with many a " badass ".I attempt to qualify myself here not for the sake of appearing like a good musician but as a judicious and seasoned consumer of music education material- who is well passed the point of thinking some app or handgrippy excercise device or stone pick or amp or guitar is going to solve my problem or " take me to the next level.Essentially, I know enough to know what is superfluous and what is the WORK and experience needed to grow... I really did not need another guitar book.I made the exception, and purchased Mr. Okazaki's book based on his playing and music, information from his site, the musical company he keeps and the musical company that keeps him. This book is a highly valuable resource and should also be shot into space to show off to other life forms how rad we can potentially be at times. The diagrams are so well designed and presented, communicating simple/complex ideas in a very intuitive and approachable manner- beyond spoken language; presenting what you've known all along in the most clear way you'll ever see and/or dangling the carrot towards pushing yourself to digest the work that is ahead of you. Things that were intriguiging as one offs were finally set in a context within an array of a larger organized system, for the purpose of embarking on understanding rather than marveling at only one aspect in a static manner. It goes with out saying that information like this goes beyond a style of music and moreover beyond guitar alone. If you are a spazz who doesn't know how / what to practice , there are excercises to follow or suggestions for ways to explore the material or generate excercises for yourself - again , not just reference. If my bookshelf were to be organized by " value " , I would place this book flanked on one side by ALL the Ted Greene books ( but not before slipping in The Advancing Guitarist by Mick Goodrick ) on one side and all 3 Harmonic Mechanisms books by George VanEpps on the other side...In short, each time I open this book it just gets cheaper.

The topics are fundamental, but the explanations are far from it, definitely not a book for beginners. The diagrams are very confusing and I think more use of notation would make some of the explanation easier to understand. I gave it four star because I feel there is some great info in this book, but it's not going to be easy to get out.
