Gale I have roots in Newfoundland and have spent several vacations in St. John's and Brigus. There is a naval officers' club in St. John's called the Crow's Nest that as existed since 1939 when Canada entered the war of which I am a proud member. This club is dedicated to the escort officers that ushered the eastbound convoys to England. St. John's was the main western Atlantic port for the escorts of the trans Atlantic convoys during World War II. I was totally unaware of how St. John's was built up as such a port and also that there were 4 governments involved in it's establishment Canada, England, U.S. and Newfondland which at that time was a separate dominion and not part of Canada. How 4 governments actually accomplished this feat is the story told in "The Newfyjohn Solution". An absolutely incredible piece of history and I highly recommend it to any fan of World War II history and the Battle of the Antlantic. If you are ever in St John's be sure to visit the Crow's Nest!!
