On the twentieth anniversary of its publication, this volume reprints and expands upon what has become a beloved photobook classic. Inspired by the striking dress codes of various social groups, Rotterdam-based photographer Ari Versluis and profiler Ellie Uyttenbroek have been systematically documenting the group identities they have encountered on the streets of cities around the world since 1994. They call their series Exactitudes, as a contraction of "exact" and "attitude." By presenting their subjects in an identical framework―each member of a group is posed similarly against a white ground―Versluis and Uyttenbroek create an almost scientific record of people's attempts to distinguish themselves from others by assuming a group identity, manifested in a strict dress code. Simultaneously rigorously documentary and artistic, the project tests the apparent contradiction between individuality and uniformity, subverts the idea of "street style" and disrupts conventions of documentary street photography (the series has been called "August Sander and Eugène Atget turned on their heads by Bernd and Hilla Becher" by photographer and critic Gil Blank). For this twentieth-anniversary edition, Versluis and Uyttenbroek have produced 19 new series. The subcultures of Rotterdam's heterogeneous street scene remain a major source of inspiration for them, although they have also visited St. Petersburg, Zurich, Milan, Beijing, Rio de Janeiro, Casablanca, Praia (Cabo Verde), New York, Bordeaux, London and Paris.

By Butterscotch really cool book. each page (and there are over 150) features a set of 12 people all dressed very similar to one another. there are variations of dress and how people attempt to be unique in their clothing choices. but, by pairing the people into groups you can see that PEOPLE ARE NOT UNIQUE! the book very clearly shows that people are conformists more than anything else, and that even the most 'unique' clothing choices make you look just like another group of folks who gravitate to that look as well. it's fun to see this. and if you do want to stand out the only way is with extremely bold patterns and prints; those were the only photos in the book where the individuals looked fairly unique and didn't comform as much. monochrome = you will always look like everyone around you whether you realize it or not.

About the Author Engineer Fazel Ahmed Afghan is the son of Mr. Abdul Satar Khan Durani (Popalza-i), born in 1937 in the town of Salihan, District of Panjwayee in the Province of Kandahar, Afghanistan. Ahmed Afghan completed his primary and secondary education at Habibia High School and at the Afghan Technical Institute of Kabul in 1960. He received his bachelor's degree from the Faculty of Engineering at Kabul University in 1964. In 1972, he received his master's degree in structural engineering from University of Manitoba in Canada. Ahmed Afghan has served in a variety of positions within the construction division of the Afghan Ministry of Education. His primary duties included being in charge of building schools across the country. He served as president of construction and then the general president of the construction unit at the Ministry of Education in Kabul. Ahmed Afghan has been the project coordinator for school buildings projects financed by UNESCO, UNICEF, WFP, World Bank, USAID, and Ministry of Education, Kabul. Ahmed Afghan was appointed as consul general of Afghanistan in Bombay, India, and served from 1981 to 1985. While living in India, he continued his work and goal of establishing peace in his motherland, Afghanistan. Since September 1987, he and his family have settled in Vancouver, Canada, where he continues to work toward his dear and critical goal.

The detailed political history of the last five decades makes it especially pertinent for present. It’s an unbiased, well-documented history of Afghanistan from international sources. The “Afghan Conundrum” has been at the forefront of the news media and the need for its resolution has been for 23 years before the American, NATO and ISAF intervention and 14 years since. He wears a long coat and carries little other than a small bag that contains a pipe. This is no ordinary pipe. It is an ancient instrument that the man, who calls himself Shadrak, begins to play. As he does, the ground begins to shake. Bones begin to appear and fasten themselves together and before long a dinosaur stands in front of him. Strange, scary, and certainly magical, but nearly as strange and scary as what Shadrak has planned for the city of St. Louis. In fact, he's just getting warmed up.Ben Bradley is a spin doctor. He works most closely with the Mayor of St. Louis. He has separated from his wife, Maggie, and isn't truly even sure why. While he tries to keep his family problems in the background, it isn't always possible. His children are understandably unhappy and his son Matt is acting out. In addition to the family drama Ben has to figure out how to put a good light on the Mayor's pet project- the redevelopment of a large area of the city that will include expensive new homes, shopping, schools, roads and parks. Unfortunately the poor residents of the area will have to go. They just don't know it yet. As construction workers begin the process of destruction, word comes back to the Mayor that they have stopped working. The reason? Rats. Huge and unusually aggressive rats. The city will need to hire a rat catcher.This is a modern retelling of the fairy tale about the Pied Piper. It is not a story for children, however, and Ben, his wife and their children- in fact ALL of the children in St. Louis- will be part of an ancient drama that has been played out over and over again through the centuries. When the homeless population of St. Louis begins to disappear and people who question the methods of the city's odd new rat catcher begin to die, Ben will have no choice but to accept that not all fairy tales are myths. And this one is deadly.

There are NO alternate fingerings - only one way to finger each note is shown. These missing alternatives can be very handy, such as the center right key for F# in scales like D (for easier E to F# to G transition). And the very commonly used Bb lever next to the rear B key is shown but not included in the charts (very good way to play Bb in scales that use it such as F major, making an easier A to Bb to C transition). And the low B and gizmo keys (some flutes that have them) are missing. This chart is the minimum a beginner would need, but no more.

Edwin Hubble was a man ahead of his time. For him, only astronomy really mattered. His major discoveries changed our knowledge of our place in the universe forever. His determination that the universe is expanding served as the foundation for the Big Bang Theory, which proposes that the entire universe started as an intense energy bust occurring at a single moment of time. He made observations and drew intelligent assumptions from it. In the process, he founded a new discipline that has now contributed much to our knowledge the forces and the nature of matter that make up the universe. Hubble’s work offered evidence that changed humankind’s perception of the universe. He wanted to find something unexpected, and he did so admirably. The impact of his declaration that the galaxies are hurtling away from each other, and that the space between them is expanding as time goes by can be felt until now. The proponents of the Big Bang Theory used Hubble’s observations in setting down their basic assumptions. Modern astrophysicists theorize that as a consequence of this expansion, it is possible that at a certain point, this instability will lead to a reversal of the expansion and the universe itself will end in a Big Crunch. Another theory presents the possibility of an unending expansion that will also lead to the death of the universe due to cooling and distension. By Jessica Greenhood Beyond the telescope, I knew nothing about Edwin Hubble. Most people presume that smart people have it easy and go by on their brains. It was nice to here that he was an athlete and due to that combined with brains got him a scholarship to go to Oxford. It was truly inspiring to hear how despite his intelligence he tested the waters in other areas till he found his niche. Edwin Hubble is truly an inspiration that I wouldn't have known if it hadn't been for this book! Thanks, Doug West for this insightful biography!

This book is straight to the point and very easy to read. i know the story of hubble by heart. Each chapter is clear and written well. There are also images that accompanies the chapters which makes it interesting.

By WildaboutbooksTJ I was at a loss for words when I finished "Bloody Bank Heist" for a long time, I think it was the shock settling in!! If I hadn't talked to Tim and found out what a nice guy he is I would be worried for his sanity!! Just when you think he has stepped over the line of horror and gore he decimates it into not even existing!! I just read with my mouth hanging open and repeating over and over,"Oh my God!! Oh my God!!!!!!" "Night of Vengeance" comes next and does not disappoint, it just puts you back into shock!! I love what happens towards the end of the story, but I'm not going to even hint at it, I'll let you discover it for yourself!! And last but not least is "The Country Club" and it didn't take long to be horrified and I was left holding my face like I was being hurt (you will find out what I am talking about and you will be just as horrified, I promise you!!!) If you like your horror shocking like a kick to the stomach you will LOVE this box set as much as I did!! I highly recommend these books and I plan on reading a lot more of Tim's books!!

If you don't like a lot of violence & gore this book isn't for you By Mark Schafer If you don't like a lot of violence & gore you should look elsewhere, but if you want 3 awesome, gory, violent stories to read that will make you wonder what the heck is wrong with this author an where did these ideas come from, then look no further grab a copy of this book today & clear your schedule because you will not want to stop reading this.I originally bought this because I wanted to read Band Heist ,but then I seen this book was on sale & got Bank Heist plus 2 other stories so I went with this one & had no regrets. I will tell you one thing Bank Heist isn't your run of the mill bank robbery gone wrong story and Country Club isn't about any Country Club you have ever heard of before. I will most definitely see what other wild ideas Tim Miller has come up with & what might be available in the future.

Our family always took a lot of pride in being one of the first pioneer families to come to the western edge of the continent before it was part of the United States and before the Oregon trail was established. My great great great great grandfather Thomas Jefferson Shadden was among the first 500 Americans to venture west of the Rockies, and eventually helped found the town of McMinnville, Oregon. Sarah Cummins was from a different branch of the family, but came at roughly the same time as Shadden, and eventually the families were united through marriage. She writes about an interesting era in US history, at a time when there were few eyewitnesses. She was a personal friend of Marcus and Narcissus Whitman, and writes an elegy about their massacre at the Whitman mission near Walla Walla. Sarah's book preserves a lot of good detail of what it was like to come out west when it was truly wild. The book was first published in 1919, and then again in 1968 when about 500 copies were printed by Ye Galleon Press.

By Ozzie Goldstien This novel tries so hard to be deep through all the useless adjectives and talking in circles but it ends up being just as deep as a puddle in the Sahara desert. the title yellow paint was fitting because it was about as thought provoking as watching paint dry. when i read this book i wept for all the souls of the trees that died to make this book. even when i gave this book to a friend the result was the same they said "I have . . . come across some truly awful books. And yet not a single one of them has managed to cause me quite as much gastrointestinal distress as has this one."

Her use of metaphors and her ability to paint a vivid scene allows the reader to feel and understand the emotions emitted by the characters. Overall a very relatable and eloquent coming of age novel.

By Cheryl Blanton 4.5* for a very entertaining and touching collection of past and present stories, poems, memoirs by residents of a retirement community in Southern California. Many of the authors are first time authors but provide material and style suggesting that for want of real opportunity within the rapidly tightening publishing establishment , would be coffee room conversational mainstays.the book opens up with a nice poem by Phil Silverman, known to me until now mainly as a Letter writer to the Opinion section of the local paper - "If We could Learn to Love the Way w Learn The Violin", the title as cool as the content.I liked all the poems and all the stories, esp. the personal and colorful "The Magic Temple" by Peggy Edwards.
