A Crying Shame By A Customer The story is as follows : The missing link between human and animal is alive and well and living in the wilds of Southeast America. Actually, they are not that well. They are slowly dying from attacks of savage insanity and the females are growing sterile. Just like any wild animals, they have the instinctive need see their genes continue into future generations. Unlike most animals, they are able to formulate a long-range strategic plan for accomplishing this. The males attack in packs the unsuspecting human females they can isolate. They gang-rape them and abduct them, carrying them back to their community lair to raise children. They are hoping for human offspring rather than beast so they can leave the childrren on the doorsteps of human houses and perpetuate their species by integrating their genes into the human race. The story is a well-woven complex tale which alternates between the terror of rape and the pity for a dying race facing extinction. WARNING : this book contains graphic accounts of rape and is not for children. However, it is a collectors item as an early work of William Johnstone and as a book that predates the age of politically correct censorship.

A "presequel" (of sorts) to Watcher in the Woods By A Customer I first saw this book in the discount bin at B Daltons and picked it up mostly because of the blurb on the back cover. I found the book well written and fast paced. The story starts out with a attack on a house owned by a brother and sister. The brother attempts to chase off the intruders with a shot gun but the results of that attempt ends up with the brother being killed and his shotgun thrown into the house bent like a horseshoe. There is some comic relief early in the book when the Sheriff while investagating the aftermath of the attack 'teases' a very religious deputy about his bad timing on copping a feel. but after that the story gets serious. The hero of the story is a soldier of fortune who was hired by the brother to investage the stories behind the swamp and if possible to capture a 'link'. With the brother dead, the hero is hired by the sister to continue the investigation advenge her brother's death. After killing a few 'links' he brings in some doctor friends of his to perform a study of the dead links. Their findings are shocking and the verbal abuse they heap on the hero is fun to read. The story is fast paced and has it moments like when the hero tells off/embarasses the aid to the president of the US in front of him. There are some moments in the book that will make some readers uncomfortable when the story dips a little into a hate crime with racial overtones but lets say the bad guys get theirs very shortly afterwards. Any long time reader of Mr Johnstone's will be a little surprised with the tone of the storyline but will agree it is a well written book. A direct sequel to this book would be great but the way the book ended I guess I will have to settle for a 'next generation' type sequel of "Watchers in the woods." If you can get your hands on a copy of this book be prepared to be scared, amused, angered and happy as well as scared again.

Good story,,, By Angela I bought A Crying Shame because it was described as the prequel to Watchers In The Woods, my favorite horror story by William W. Johnstone. While it did take place before the events in Watchers I wouldn't really call it a prequel. It was more like an earlier, less pulled together version of the same story. I still thought that the plot was really good, just not as good. If you are easily offended by non-PC storylines this isn't the book for you. The scenes of horror are graphic and gory, and the tension is really well done. I really enjoyed this story! So why the 3.5 star rating??? The formatting in the eBook version is horrendous. The punctuation is in the wrong places and the upside down quotation marks drove me crazy. It honestly kept throwing me right out of the story when I had to go back to see if it was a description or dialogue I was reading. Books by Johnstone are usually a great read for me but not this time. If you can get past the formatting this is a decent story. A fast paced and frustrating 3.5 star read.

By the second chapter I was hooked and read through it in about two hours. The author builds events but leaves out the climax, which was a tad disheartening, but since this will be a series (It's labeled 'book one' so I assume there will be a book 2 - I'm a genius) I hope the critical situations the three main characters were in become solved in the next book. I will definitely be purchasing the next book in the series as I was well taken with the characters and wish to find out the outcomes of their situations. Two hours of good literary escapism for three bucks is a good deal. Recommended.

Toneye takes the unusual step of dropping the reader into the middle of the story. This could've been a problem, but instead it is handled well. Plenty going on in a tale of a sacred dagger that possess whomever comes into contact with it, dishing out unspeakable acts of murder. Scarlett holds the dagger, and the power, but when she runs into a young girl, she loses it. This is a very quick but intriguing read. It almost reads like a young adult novel, however, there are some gruesome scenes which kept me reading. It will be interesting to see where this goes to next, particularly how the dagger came to be and how Scarlett came into its possession. I like the writing. It's not too wordy but Toneye creates a dark and brooding atmosphere. 4 stars. I feel the best is yet to come from Toneye Eyenot. Recommended to fans of Dark Fantasy and horror.

By Confessions of a Reviewer In a little break from the norm, I picked up The Scarlett Curse: Sacred Blade of Profanity Book One by Toneye Eyenot, to read for my own pleasure rather than a review submission. This book is published by the wonderful people at J Ellington Ashton Press.I picked this up for a read of my own for a couple of reasons. I have seen quite a buzz in the social media scene about this man’s writing and also Book Two has just come out so I wanted to have a go at this so I can catch up with the story. The first surprise I got was the fact that this is a fantasy story and not pure horror. My bad. I automatically thought that it would be horror given the circles Mr Eyenot travels in. Nevertheless, I started it, so I will finish it.This is what I thought.Scarlett holds the key to many a person’s end. She currently possesses the Sacred Blade of Profanity. Or does it possess her? This ancient blade possesses whoever holds it and it commands them to do its bloody deeds. When Scarlett loses control of the blade, young Dera picks it up and is instantly overcome with bloodlust.Scarlet must now try to rectify things while both of them need to try and outrun Joshua, a man with his own troubles that he believes getting hold of Dera can fix.In terms of characters, this one mainly centres around Scarlett, Dera and Joshua. Scarlett is obviously going to be the heroine in this saga, although heroine may be a term used loosely. Dera is just a confused young girl caught up in something that makes no sense to her and something she cannot control. Joshua is vile. At least that is my impression of him due to some things he does but that may change as the story progresses. So what is the story? What is the plot? That is the interesting bit, or as I found, the confusing bit as well. The fact that it has Book One in its title suggests that this is going to be a series. The fact that book two is out confirms this. This Book One to me, was confusing. When the story begins you are dropped straight in the middle of it. No explanations and no build up, just bam and the action starts. Now, in some ways, I like this idea but I would have liked it a bit more if there had been some explaining later in the book about how Scarlett came to own the blade and what it’s true history was. Now, again, I understand this will probably come in further parts of the story but it left me wanting a little bit more from this book to clarify things for me.However, this is good stuff. It has a real dark feeling to it that I reckon is going to fill out very nicely and has huge potential to become a story of wonder. This is a short read, coming out at about fifty pages or so. It’s not a great deal of time to get across to your readers the feeling that a story like this deserves. However, again, Mr Eyenot does it very effectively. Even with the confusion I felt at times, when you read this you will quite easily get lost in the sights and sounds and smells of the time. The writing style is sometimes punchy and to the point but at the same time asks your own imagination to fill in the blanks and pad things out a bit more. That isn’t an easy thing to do. Especially in a short book like this where you are trying to introduce a whole new concept and story of probable epic proportions.Apart from the confusion at times, I really liked this one and after letting it sit in my mind for a while before writing the review, it is growing on me even more. Time to go pick up book two I think. To summarise: the opening part of what I would call a dark fantasy tale that is sure to develop and turn magical. Mr Eyenot’s writing is very easy on the Eye and I really look forward to reading more of this saga.General rating:★★★★ has potential.Dark Fantasy rating:★★★★ practically perfectly dark.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Good read By Luv2read Conditioned by Christoph Fischer is a well-written thought provoking story that does not disappoint. I have been following this author’s works for years and enjoying his stories, including this one that tackles all aspects of the human condition without glossing over. The characters from the prequel, Conditions, are revisited but this time I love how it starts with a wedding invite instead of centering on a death and funeral. The wedding and related events (involving a hospital emergency room and more than one of the plot’s characters) with all the multifaceted relationship issues unfolded at a fast pace making this a very easy engaging read. Without retelling the story let me say this, Fischer can write and tell a compelling story that engages and entertains. This one in particular takes it a step further in getting the reader to think, about tolerance and being judgmental. He challenges us to look at ourselves, beyond the façade of social machinations and opinions that separate and divide, into the depth of our humanness and how we all struggle to overcome the hard situations life throws at us. This story looks at the group of friends and doesn’t bring it to a neat and tidy happy ending for all, and that’s real, it isn’t how life goes. Some of us learn, grow, change, and shine, others continue to act out the same-old, same-old, and don’t seem to ever learn. It’s a really good read that resonates authentic. This is where Fischer shines.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. If you enjoyed Fischer’s novel By Diana If you enjoyed Fischer’s novel, Conditions, this next offering in the series is a must. The action centers on the impending marriage of Catherine and Robert, two characters introduced in the first book. Last united for the funeral of Charles’s and Tony’s mother, the friends of the couple prepare for the approaching wedding. Fischer offers the reader glimpses into the changing relationships, expectations, and choices of the characters, while exploring the way that realistic and complex relationships weave together and play off one another.Conditioned is well-crafted with careful attention to character depth. It touches on themes of friendship, family, love, domestic violence, and mental health from a variety of perspectives. Any reader who enjoys a character-based story with nuanced relationships will enjoy this read and hope for another in the series.I was provided a pre-release copy of the book by the author and was not asked to provide a review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Completely relatable. By Lauren Alumbaugh This book is a follow up to Conditions, it takes place a year after the initial book and gives us a few answers that were left. I love that the author took so many issues that truly do fall under mental health, addiction, abuse, depression and brought them to life with characters everyone can relate to. there's no one alive that can't relate to at least one character and the issues that they are currently going through. the story is very heartfelt and really brings to light issues people do not want to talk about. I was shocked at how the book ended, it ended rather quickly. I have grown quite attached these characters and hope there is another installment.

Ingres's style was formed early in life and changed comparatively little. His earliest drawings, such as the Portrait of a Man (1797) already show a suavity of outline and an extraordinary control of the parallel hatchings which model the forms. His portrait drawings, of which about 450 are extant, are today among his most admired works. While a disproportionate number of them date from his difficult early years in Italy, he continued to produce portrait drawings of his friends until the end of his life. Ingres drew his portrait drawings on wove paper, which provided a smooth surface very different from the ribbed surface of laid paper, which is, nevertheless, sometimes referred to today as "Ingres paper". Drawings made in preparation for paintings, are more varied in size and treatment than are the portrait drawings. He also drew a number of landscape views while in Rome but, with the exception of the small tondo Raphael's Casino, he painted no pure landscapes.

The only complain is that the pictures are a bit small, but they are very clear, so it is fine. Probably, the beast collection of Ingres's drawings. About the Author The Reverend Doctor John Wolfersberger is a retired Protestant minister whose love of art and poetry began in childhood: art lessons in the seventh grade taught him watercolor and oils and his mother read classical poetry to him at bedtime. These gifts matured into retirement when he has been able to actualize them in this book.

In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson and Defense Secretary Robert McNamara were desperate to find additional troops for the Vietnam War, but they feared that they would alienate middle-class voters if they drafted college boys or sent Reservists and National Guardsmen to Vietnam. So, on October 1, 1966, McNamara lowered mental standards and inducted thousands of low-IQ men. Altogether, 354,000 of these men were taken into the Armed Forces and a large number of them were sent into combat. Many military men, including William Westmoreland, the commanding general in Vietnam, viewed McNamara’s program as a disaster. Because many of the substandard men were incompetent in combat, they endangered not only themselves but their comrades as well. Their death toll was appallingly high. In addition to low-IQ men, tens of thousands of other substandard troops were inducted, including criminals, misfits, and men with disabilities. This book tells the story of the men caught up in McNamara’s folly.

Edwards Many of us--especially Vietnam veterans like myself--know well the basic facts: that an escalation of troop levels began in the mid-1960's and peaked at about 550,000 by 1968; that all total 2.7 million Americans served in Vietnam during the war years; and that 58,000 American's died there, mostly in combat situations. But how many know that approximately 10% of those casualties were suffered by low IQ men brought into the service under a plan sponsored by Secretary of Defense Robert McNamera that drastically lowered the recruitment standards in order to fill the ranks, while ostensibly serving to give these low functioning men a chance to better themselves? The program was known as "McNamara's 100,000" for the number of substandard men to be recruited each year--commonly referred to as "McNamara's Morons." While the program did not necessary intend to send those men--many of whom were illiterate--into combat, they often ended up on the front lines, dying at a rate three time higher than their cohorts of normal intelligence.Haminton Gregory, a Vietnam veteran, journalist and college professor, tells the story with a compelling blend of objectivity and restrained moral force. Gregory went through Army boot camp at Fort Benning in 1967 where, as a college graduate, he was assigned to "look out for" another recruit who happened to be one of "McNamara's 100,000." Gregory describes his astonishment at discovering that this young man could not read, write, tie his shoes and did not understand that the U.S. was at war. Such men got through training, Gergory describes, thanks to leaders under pressure to keep the pipeline full who were willing to look the other way. Frustrated officers who tried to resist and send low-IQ recruits home were often rebuffed by the chain of command.Though the haunting story of this program is full of fascinating anecdotes and statistics, Gregorgy grounds it in the larger social context of conscription during the Vietnam era. The pipeline needed to be pumped full of less-than-combat-capable individuals because so many of the most intelligent young men were managing to avoid this increasingly unpopular war. Sons of the upper-middle class and upper class had no trouble getting student deferrements, and other means of avoidance. All it took to get a medical "pass" was a trip to the right doctor. If you had the wherewithal you could flee to Canada or Sweden, far from the killing fields of Indochina. The argument can even be made that the need to reach lower and lower into the barrel of potential recruits contributed to such tragedies as the My Lai Massacre, where the troops were led by a college dropout.Aside from a single instance of mild redundancy, this book has the qualities of a page turner--a well-told tale of a compelling situation. Though the subject may have special resonance for those of us who came of age during the Vietnam War era, its message still speaks just as strongly today. Our modern wars in Iraq and Afganistan are being fought by an all-volunteer military. These men and women, however, in return for making their decision to sacrifice for the nation, are being exposed to multiple, brutal combat tours, and they are paying the price. The Vietnam draftee was limited to a single tour. Both then and now, the upper socio-economic strata of our society is under-represented in combat. I believe that "McNamara's Folly" will become a classic in the literature of how a society approaches making war. For its drama and human interest this book deserves to be widely read.

A Brilliant Exposé of McNamara's Malfeasance By George Frazier This is a biased review, as the author of McNamara’s Folly, Hamilton Gregory, is a close friend, an old Army buddy, and fellow Vietnam vet. But this is also an informed review, as I also witnessed the chaos that ensued when Lyndon Johnson’s Secretary of Defense, Robert McNamara, decided to shift the burden of the draft from qualified college students to unqualified men with mental deficiencies, physical shortcomings, and criminal records. The result, as masterfully told by Gregory—former AP reporter and current author of a bestselling college textbook—is both an indictment of a monumental military mistake and an explanation of the collapse of the American military in the waning years of the Vietnam War.Gregory’s prodigious research is evident in his thorough, yet brisk, exposé of the use of low-IQ troops in the Vietnam War. The predictably tragic results include thousands of combat deaths, tens of thousands of serious war wounds, and hundreds of thousands of lives disrupted, if not destroyed. A harsh dénouement to the forced induction of those previously found unsuitable for military service was the “bad paper” (less than honorable) discharges of many of these men for “unsuitability” for military service! Men already on the margins of society were put in harm’s way, then cast aside with military discharges that left them ineligible for many jobs and most veterans’ benefits. Finally, McNamara’s Folly fully explains why the US military melted down in the final years of the Vietnam War. By drafting the mentally deficient, the physically incapable, and the morally flawed—including drug addicts and convicted criminals—the United States sent not “the best and the brightest” into combat, but the worst and the wanting. Gregory clearly and concisely reveals this tragic episode in American history.McNamara’s Folly is must reading for anyone wishing to understand the final years of the Vietnam War.

He blends research and personal experience with such ease and provides a voice for the voiceless and powerless. More than anything, he reminds us of our shared humanity. What strikes me most is the fact that "the folly continues," as Mr. Gregory writes. The book shows that Project 100,000 still impacts us today; the disaster isn't just a past event, though the Vietnam veterans certainly got the worst of it. The following passage encapsulates the spirit of the book: "The least intelligent among us should never be viewed as expendable units of manpower, but as our fellow sojourners on this fragile earth, deserving respect and compassion -- and gratitude for the contributions they make to our families and to our society." Mr. Gregory is to be commended for writing this most important work.

In this collection of fourteen stories—mostly set among working folks in the Hudson River Valley of New York—music, food, philosophy, and magic weave through tales that are by turns gritty, aching, and comical. Characters grapple with unfulfilled dreams in a dizzying, often alien culture. Meet a Bronx Italian Zen master with a baby and an ex-football-star partner…a young curator assigned to coddle an infamous avant-garde artist whose assistant threatens her marriage…a Homer scholar who disappears in a blizzard over a stone wall, never to be seen again…a failed graduate student who nearly gets paralyzed delivering a case of gourmet cat food to his Heidegger professor to settle a vague psychic debt…a reincarnating Ancient Egyptian chef who travels thousand of years from the banks of the Nile to a surf-crazed town in Southern California to open a bakery…and others. All are drawn with empathy and wry humor, observed through a sharp lens as they wrestle and waltz with the blunt challenge of being human—Dancing with Dasein.

Dancing with Dasein and Other Stories, by Mark Morganstern

Review "'Dancing with Dasein' is more than a book of engagingly quirky short stories; it is a visit with a wise old friend who maintains a compassionate worldview of this absurd little planet in the cosmos and its walking wounded inhabitants. Every page is suffused with an abiding affection." --Jay Blotcher, journalist and memoirist"Morganstern’s well known love of music has influenced his ear for language; throughout the collection, the flow is seamless.... His rich imagination keeps the tales dancing on the edge of magical realism, while his eye for the telling details of gritty, complicated lives anchors them firmly to their workaday settings. And as if that weren’t enough, the man is hilariously funny." --Anne Pyburn Craig, BlueStone Press

Review "'Of all the tofu joints in the world, he'd walked into mine.' Morganstern's funny, sad, exceedingly human stories set in the Hudson Valley and their portrayals of our foibles, vanities and dreams, nascent and crushed, bring to mind such classic regionals as Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio, Salinger's Upper West Side, and Trollope's Barsetshire. Dancing with Dasein will make you want to live in a place like Rosendale, New York, or stay as far away as humanly possible." --Jennifer Belle, best-selling author of 'High Maintenance' and other books"Readers will have such a good time with these stories. It’s not even the storyline in some cases, but the words Morganstern uses to tell them. He has a unique and powerful voice. Morganstern is in his prime with hilarious and spot-on character development that you’ll recognize as authentic and off the rails." --Kevin Hurley, author of 'Cut and Cover'"Mark Morganstern has an original voice and every story displays his great talent. The stories are original and quirky--and very enjoyable." --Laura Shaine Cunningham, author of 'Sleeping Arrangements'

About the Author Mark Morganstern is a native of Schenectady, New York. He studied at the Manhattan School of Music, played bass fiddle, and toured with jazz and classical ensembles before deciding that music was not his best choice of profession. An avid reader and writer, he switched majors, studied with Edna O’Brien, Maureen Howard, and Jonathan Wordsworth, and graduated from the City University of New York with an MA in English/Creative Writing. His fiction has appeared in Prima Materia, The Crescent City Review, Piedmont Literary Review, New Southern Literary Messenger, Hunger Magazine, Expresso Tilt, Mothering Magazine, and other journals, and was anthologized in Tribute to Orpheus II. He received an honorable mention for his story, “Tomorrow’s Special,” published in the Chronogram 11/06 Fiction Contest issue, selected by guest judge, Valerie Martin. Mark subs at the local high school (everything from physics to gym, occasionally even English) and books concerts for The Rosendale Cafe, a vegetarian eatery he owns with his wife Susan and their children. He hopes to retain that position despite his kids' threats to fire him for writing fiction on the job.

His stories are funny and poignant and show such a unique appreciation for the families of the Hudson Valley. I'm recommending it to my book club because it is a collection that offers good stories and great writing and lots to talk about regarding both!

Devilish Dancing By wopple A wickedly funny collection of short stories, somewhere between Peter De Vries and Raymond Carver, with David Mitchell's Bone Clocks thrown in. Behind the cynical wit and mayhem is a serious writer addressing personal issues of family, society and the travails of the life of an aspiring artist obliged to make a living elsewhere, as we do. From a recollection of life as jazz bass guitarist through a career of restauranteur, strange tales, often involving cooking, merciless portrayals of New Age follies and a brilliant coda of reincarnation (usually as a personal chef, from pre-history to Dick Cheney's…) Mr Morganstern moved me to tears, of laughter and otherwise.

An unexpected, and thoroughly enjoyable collection of short stories By Gabrielle Greene An unexpected pleasure - this book was referred to me by a friend, and although I generally am not big on short stories - I loved this collection. The writing was so clear and the stories very compelling. I thoroughly enjoyed it - an unexpected, wonderful read.

Terrifying Freedom, by Linda Anne Smith

Review "Linda Anne Smith deftly unfolds the drama of a person who enters religious life in search of God and gradually realizes she is becoming estranged not only from society but also from herself. The story takes the reader into the secluded world of women religious who create a counterculture by living the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience in community while devoting themselves to educating children. The reader admires the exemplary commitment embodied in a spectrum of characters. Smith's sympathetic depiction of these figures accounts for the poignancy of the shadows that emerge from within the best of people. The narrative illustrates how a benevolent community can become a web in which no one speaks her own mind with the result that everyone is diminished. In a perfect world, freedom is terrifying indeed.... This book is essentially the intro chapter to an actual guide on growing mushrooms, and it takes about as long to read. If you have spent any amount of time googling the topic, you probably already know everything in this book. Although it is nicely written and concisely presents the topic, I wouldn't recommend this to anyone except someone who has zero knowledge of the topic, and even then, there are other resources out there that have this info and more. If I had paid full price for this I would have been pretty pissed. I have paid far less for ebooks that were far more in depth on the topics they covered.

This book is great for anyone interested in cultivating their own mushrooms, but it is especially good for those who live in the city and don’t have access to groceries that sell mushrooms. The books comes with step-by-step guide one how to cultivate mushrooms from step 1 to finish. What I liked about the book was it was clear and concise with clear photos on what the mushrooms look like. It was very easy to understand. If you are looking for an organic way to have fresh, healthy, eatable mushrooms, this is your guide book.

Erickson I was very excited to learn about cultivating mushrooms, but was disappointed by the lack of any depth in the information presented. The author glossed over terms and details that were essential to a beginner having even a basic understanding of mushroom cultivation. The author instead chose to gloss over a wide range of topics regarding mushrooms, and I stress "gloss over." The best way to describe this is as a very good book report and a very poor book.

In 1952, Cedar Falls, Iowa, celebrated the centennial of its founding with parades, contests, food, and fun. The city had grown from a village with a stump-filled Main Street into a shining example of postWorld War II America. The citys diversified economy provided opportunity to thousands through large employers such as the Viking Pump Company, Clay Equipment, and Iowa State Teachers College. Thanks to the foresight of earlier residents, the city had its own hospital and utility company, which allowed for a comforting self-sufficiency. Known over the years as the Garden City of Iowa, the City Beautiful, and the Smiling City, by the middle of the 20th century Cedar Falls had fulfilled the promise foreseen by its earliest founders and looked forward to its next 100 years.

Katherine Whitton doesn't purposely avoid men and relationships, but she doesn't mind that side effect of immersing herself in her job with the San Francisco Blaze. Years ago she was betrayed by her one true love, and she's never fully recovered, though she's tried by building a new life in a city she loves.

It's taken seventeen years for Tom Morgan to get over Katie—Katherine now. Sober now and faced with the incredible opportunity to manage the Blaze, he thinks he'll finally be able to handle working with this beautiful woman without falling to pieces…as long as she doesn't get too close.

A crisis with the team's star pitcher forces Tom and Katherine to put in long hours together. Years of animosity melt away as the sexual tension between them ignites. But it'll take more than scorching kisses to avoid the wreckage of the past. And neither Tom nor Katie are sure they're ready to trust each other or risk their hearts for a second chance at happiness.

Read The Winning Season and Catching Heat for more stories about the San Francisco Blaze.

They're not my catnip; I don't love them, but I like them. I know some people think that there's a reason a couple broke up in the first place, but I think in cases like this, enough time has passed where the characters are different people at a very different point in their lives, and it could work.Katherine (Katie) Whitton and Tom Morgan were high-school sweethearts in Dallas, TX until the very end of their senior year when they broke up and went to separate colleges. They've both moved on somewhat, had other relationships (it has been seventeen years, after all), but neither of them has ever had anything even close to that relationship since high school, has never loved anyone else like that. They each seem to blame the other for the break-up, and it becomes clear very early on that neither of them has the full story. Hurt feelings and pride kept both of them away from Dallas after that summer, so when Tom comes to work for the San Francisco Blaze, where Katherine has been working for about a decade, it's the first time they've seen each other since high school. The chemistry between them is still there, it hasn't gone anywhere. Tom is the team manager, and Katherine is the head of the public relations department, they're going to be working together a lot. There obviously needs to be a conversation about the past, but every time one of them tries to bring it up, either the other shuts it down, or a phone rings, or someone interrupts them. It isn't until they're both on a road trip with the team that they both acknowledge that it has to be talked about, possibly fought over, but gotten out in the open if they're ever going to be able to continue working together.I felt for Katherine and Tom both when they found out what had happened seventeen years ago. They both feel betrayed, rightfully so, and can't get past the time they lost together. Who knows how their lives would have turned out if they'd stayed together, but they both would have liked to have found out. They were really good together, we can see from the glimpses we get of them from the past, and the way they are with each other now. This may have been the rare high school relationship to go the distance, but they weren't able to find out.For the most part, I liked this book. Katherine does keep one secret from Tom, and when he discovers it, it's the Black Moment in the book, and he runs. I didn't love this. I don't deny him his feelings; I get why he'd be upset, but he was looking at the situation as a mid-thirties man would, not as a terrified teenage girl would. Every time Katherine tried to talk to him about it, he'd shut her out and walk away. I was as frustrated as Katherine was and don't know if I would have been as willing to keep trying. When she made it clear to them that they were done, I may have cheered a little bit. But only a little bit. This is the fifth book in a series, which I didn't realize before picking it up. It was clear that some of the couples in this one were from earlier books, so I may go back and read them. It seemed obvious who would be in some of the upcoming books, too and I think those stories will be really good, so I'll definitely move on with the series, even if I don't read the backlist. I would definitely recommend this one!

By Samantha Pereira Tom and Katherine (Katie to him since they were 14 and he doesn't plan to change it) fell in love in high school and were torn apart by lies. They never truly stopped loving one another so when when Tom began working with the same baseball team Katherine was two years ago she has to become icy to shield herself. After a few twists the two end up kissing, burning each other up, and talking about the past to realize a shocking betrayal that neither of them had anything to do with. This betrayal cost them 17 years of life together they could have had. The two give in to their attraction, their love, and decide to try again. A few more small grenades are thrown at them which threaten to rip them apart.I liked Katherine, even if she was a bit naive, because she wasn't intentionally malicious or petty. She worked hard, gave her work her all, and rallied behind the baseball players when they needed her in their corner. Tom was matched for her because he could understand things about her that she didn't understand herself.Tom was such a sweet character. Honestly, do men like him exist? If I go to Dallas, Texas, will I find a Tom Morgan? Tom is smart, an ex-professional baseball player turned manager, compassionate, territorial, loyal, and funny. Even with Katherine treating him as though she detested him, he sat next to her on the flight when she was struggling with coping. Katherine has a massive fear of flying, especially takeoff and landing, which Tom knew and he gave her a way to deal with the situation. It was easy to like Tom and even easier to fall in love with him.I began the novel during my lunch break at work and was really frustrated when I had to stop reading. It was a good story and made you believe that true love can truly conquer all. Stealing Second gets 4.5 steamy and sweet stars from me.

Tunick In the fifth (and I think final) story in this series, we are introduced to VP of Media Relations Katherine and Blaze Team Manager Tom. Both have a past that the author drips and drops along the first 50% of the story. A relationship that ended badly. The fact that now, 17 years later, they are once again working together is proving difficult, since both have unresolved feelings, but neither are ready or willing to admit it. When the pair are forced together on a road trip for the team, secrets finally come to light and Katherine and Tom realize that they still feel the same way about each other now as they did when they were teens. But can 17 years, a few misguided parental involvements, and time heal all wounds, or are they never supposed to be together? My main complaint about this book was that the author dragged along the will they or won't they plot for far too long. More than half the book should not be spent on past behaviors, especially if the author only alludes to them, and never really delves into depth with the why Katherine and Tom parted, or the secrets they've been carrying ever since. Once the pair finally did get together, the author made them work for it, and as a reader, it frustrated me. I want to see happy couples, not hot sex, then fighting, then making up, then mistrust, etc. While I'm glad that this did end on a HEA, there were still a lot of questions that weren't answered. I also think both Tom and Katherine were too forgivable to the people who had wronged them.I will say that it was nice catching up with characters from previous books in the series, but overall, I think Alison Packard is a good writer, but she needs to get to her main point a lot faster.

Acceptance By Poet's Eyes BOOK REVIEW: Redneck, by Clayton Williamson.I’m surprised at me for even agreeing to reading this but I have to admit I got some laughs at how Reggie had a way of putting things:“She rubbed my chest underneath my shirt, and my britches got all crowded” - “She unzipped my sleepin’ bag and gave into her primal ways. And I ain’t gonna go into any more detail, cause as I said earlier our lovemakin’ ain’t none of your damn business.” – but then he tells you anyway without going into detail (corny but I laughed). The author used 'acknowledge the reader' by speaking, on occasion, directly to the readerRuby and Reggie, married and in love; taking a musical tour through America, playing in churches and coffee shops, out to experience the journey, on a mission to become recognized for their music as well as recognized by the people cut their tour short because Ruby wanted to go home.Camping out on the way home, Reggie, standing by the lake peeing, going over his life up to that point, realized he no longer believed in God, thus the internal battle begins. The situations that followed based on those two threads, Country Western music and God, moved the book forwards on an interesting path.Be careful who you let into your life on a whim of spoken words because you may not know the mission they are actually working on. Keith was a user who would do anything to be recognized as a Country Western artist, he claimed to be a ‘religious man’ – did his deeds show him in that light?Don’t be surprised by the author’s use of the word ‘won’t’ – I guess that’s Redneck talk. I found a thread in this read that has the world confused as hate rises. My interpretation of the Bible does not ‘leave people out’ – the key for me is to love one another as Jesus even dined with those who did not believe and were a little shady. My question becomes how one saves souls if instead they live in a world of non-acceptance of non-believers. God is about free-will, love, acceptance understanding…But then the store clerk shared my understanding and shared that understanding with Reggie as well.I enjoyed this read, enjoyed the characters, the mission and the ending because there is always time, if you keep on living!!

A raunchy, bawdy, humorous meaning-of-life ride that throws a good Baptist upbringing into the pickup bed with the rest of the manure. It's the same backlash to fundamentalist hooey many of us contemplated but were too afraid of burning in hell for all eternity to say so out loud.In Redneck, Reggie Dunn walks the path of a creation/sin/judgement/redemption theological theme, albeit with a profane twist and country music score. Life, love, and music-making prospects are good - until Dunn denies the existence of God, at a lakeside in the middle of the night. There's even a serpent involved...

A relatable protagonist and his tangible human relationships make this a great read. It made me laugh, it made me cry, thank you for this book. Oh, and you can definitely see some Williamson personas in the great Ruby Naris and Reggie Dunn duo. Great job Clayton!

When Jake and Billy’s mother died, their father’s sister moved in to help raise the boys. And when their father left to find work in California, Jake promised to take care of his little brother. But soon another man infected their home. Bruises started to appear on his aunt’s face, and Jake knew he had to protect Billy. Though Jake was only twelve and his brother nine, Jake took Billy and set off with nothing more than a bundle of clothes, their father’s pistol and the last letter he sent them. To convince his brother to leave, Jake tells Billy they are going to find their father in California. Once on the road, Jake has to protect the younger Billy from the dangers they encounter on their long journey. He also tries to shield him from the truth about their father, a truth that could break the bond between brothers. Combining the poetry of place in Thoreau's prose with the stark narrative voice of a Cormac McCarthy novel, Schwarz creates a weighty debut novel of two young brothers' odyssey across the plains of the western United States. Banish any notions that this is a quaint, coming-of-age story for young adult readers. The gritty mining towns, bars, brothels and the harsh open country of the "wild west" during America's western expansion are the backdrop for an exploration of the themes of brotherhood, honor and self-reliance. Readers who identify with protective, older brother Jake or earnest, younger brother Billy will be rewarded throughout the brothers' journey with moments tender and trying, all the way to the cathartic last scenes.
