This book like no other delves into the exploitation of small communities by gas companies. Here is the irrefutable evidence of the detrimental effects of fracking. ‘Gasland Refugees is the true story of a human tragedy that continues to unfold because governments around the world are too gutless to stand up to this voracious, all-powerful industry. It’s easier for politicians to turn a blind eye to the destruction and havoc this industry wreaks — they are just too greedy or too scared to take the industry on. I feel for the unwitting victims — my friends and neighbours, their children, their pets and their livestock. I hate to call them this, but they are nothing more than Collateral Damage. We are left with polluted air, water and earth, devastated communities, devalued properties and fractured lives thrown into economic and emotional turmoil, while the energy companies smirk all the way to the bank. To those like me, fighting this unfair fight, we must never give up. If I did not believe that good would ultimately prevail over evil, I would’ve surrendered long ago. We must stand strong.’ Tara Meixsell, activist and author of Collateral Damage

This was a fictional portrayal of the effects of fracking on the Australian way of life published in 2012. As a result of this review, I was offered a free copy of " Gasland Refugees" by Peter Ralph and Tara Meixsell in return for an honest review. This is an entirely different book than the 2012 tome. It is not a "I LOVE it" book. If I could give it a 4.5 I would do it .This is more like a term paper on the consequences of fracking in Australia and the United States. Most chapters have footnotes on claims made and those quoted so the reader can look it up herself and read the whole story. I found myself doing that at times to make sure I was understanding the bigger picture .Each chapter is unique. Some drew me in fully. Others needed more time and effort. I read stories of people who had lost everything including their health . I read papers written by learned scientists on both sides of the coin. Once again I could read the whole study , not just what is quoted in the book. I must confess I only did a bit of that since I was often out of my element in understanding the learned scientists .There is an excellent glossary to help the neophyte . I found myself referring to it as the stories shifted from one country to the other.Chapter One gets to the heart of the matter "Is unconventional gas really cleaner than coal" If you read no other chapter in its entirety , read this one.I enjoyed meeting in person those people only alluded to in "Dirty Fracking Business". I found myself saying "You have GOT to be kidding" more times than one. Non-disclosure agreements make it hard to tell who is telling the truth, on either side.I read the first book with a sense of "those poor people over there" In this book I had to read stories from Pennsylvania, Texas and Wyoming and other US sites. My question now is "What is going on HERE ?" One difference is how Australia and the US treat land and mineral rights. Chapter 16 is long but important to the whole story. Each state has its own set of rules and regulations.I started this book as a neutral , disinterested reader. I am trying to stay neutral but am now fully engaged in understanding the process of "hydraulic fracturing" in Florida. I think my investment of time reading these 252 pages was time well spent.Imagine my surprise last week hearing "FPL gets OK to charge customers for fracking" Let the games begin.
3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. which presents a nice break from the 'science' of it all By Lina A well-researched, interesting read highlighting the similarities between the damages of fracking that occur in the US and Australia. The power of this book lies in Ralph's inclusion of personal, emotional tales from those families heavily affected by fracking practices, which presents a nice break from the 'science' of it all. That being said, scientific descriptions and data in Gasland Refugees are great in that they are easily understandable to the layperson. A great, informative read, especially for those interested in the fracking debate!
