Stearns Newburg This newest issue of Emanations is huge, and it appears heavily oriented towards tales, containing more than 300 pages of fiction. The novella by Michael G. Chivers, "The Squalling Terror," is a major work of 100 pages; it is very well executed, with elements of terror, literary parody, and political satire - all handled with skill and subtlety. I would buy this work for Chivers' novella alone. Several of the other stories aren't so dusty, either.

The unity of art and life was the goal of the Art Nouveau movement, the prelude to modernity. On the basis of shared ideas, its adherents strove for a homogenous style, which nonetheless took on manifold variations in its expression. Dr. Gabriele Fahr-Becker explores this artistic movement in architecture, interior decor, furniture design, silver and gold smithery, ceramics and glasswork, graphic arts and painting. The author leads her readers through the diverse national variations of Art Nouveau in Europe and the United States. The significance of the literary and philosophical as well as cultural and political background is explained by means of many theories and writings by artists and their contemporaries. The countless permutations of Art Nouveau are woven into a complex and yet distinctive picture of this artistic movement at the turn of the twentieth century.

The Flowering of Modernity By Georgia A very large, comprehensive and definitive book on Art Nouveauâ€" with almost 480 sumptuous illustrations, many full page and double page, and almost all in beautiful color â€" of the highest quality photographic reproduction. Absolutely breathtaking example s of the great diversity of Art Nouveau as it is expressed in decorations, embellishments, objects of every description, jewelry, lighting and lamps, furniture, architecture and fine art. This overwhelming quest for the New (Nouveau) â€" a monumental art mo vement which swept across Europe and America around the turn of the centuryâ€" awakened western culture from the limiting concepts of the 19th century into the global enlightenment of the 20th. Revolting against repressive 19th century mores, Art Nouveau e xplored and reveled in the vital life-force of nature and its untold processes and organic mysteries.End Notes: "On the basis of shared ideas and ideals, artists strove after a homogenous style that would find expression not in uniformity but in variety. Despite all the inconsistencies, a unified framework does show through the many variations. . . Art historian and Art Nouveau scholar Dr. Gabriele Fahr-Becker pursues this yearning for an all-pervasive style in its impact on architecture, interior desig n, furniture, gold and silversmiths' works, art ceramics and glass, graphics and painting. She guides the reader through the various national schools in Scotland, England, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Russia, Scandinavia, Germany, Austria and the United States." . . . "The countless threads of Art Nouveau are interwoven to form a complex and yet clearly distinguishable picture of an art movement on the threshold of the 20th century."""

A Total Work of Art By Shellie Art Nouveau (French for new art) was a decorative arts, design and architectural movement that began in the last decade of the 19th Century and ended with the cataclysmic onset of World War I. Art Nouveau was a reaction to the shoddy, fussy and regressive historicism of most 19th Century industrial design and architecture... it truly was the dawning of the modern age in the fields of the applied arts. Art Nouveau had its germination in England of the 1870s and 1880s, first with the Aesthetic Movement, and then with the Arts & Crafts Movement, but the style came to full fruition in continental Europe during the 1890s. Variously inspired by nature, Rococo, Symbolist art and poetry, Japanese and Middle Eastern art and the female form, Art Nouveau was a dynamic and ebullient style that briefly captivated the fervid imagination of the turn of the century public. Its first flowering was in France and Belgium and then later in Scotland, Germany, Holland, Scandinavia, Spain, the Austro Hungarian Empire and later still across the Atlantic in North America. Art Nouveau was a pan european movement that swiftly spread around the industrialized world during the first age of globalization, predominately being concentrated in larger urban areas. The new style flourished in towns and cities such as Paris and Nancy, Brussels, Darmstadt, Munich and Weimar, Barcelona, Glasgow, Helsinki, Vienna, Prague and Chicago amongst others. Early Art Nouveau was graceful and elegant with a stylistic vocabulary inspired by motifs drawn from nature, such as stylized plants with whiplash tendrils; it was curvilinear, curvaceous and sinuous. Later the style became more abstracted, rhythmical and severe (especially in Austria and Scotland) with an emphasis on straight lines or repeating squares and selective ornamentation. Art Nouveau was known under various names in many European countries; three amongst them being, Jungendstil in Germany, Stil Liberty in Italy, and Modernisme in Spain. Art Nouveau pursued an aesthetically unified goal with its best designers creating a gesamtkunstwek (German for total works of art) where every component in a buildings interior was coordinated and homogenous. Art Nouveau was an art of the Fin de Siecle or Belle Époque age with their enthusiasm for, yet apprehension over the fast pace of industrialization. The facade of the old world was crumbling to be replaced by a new social and economic order that frightened many people who were quite comfortable with the way things were... great change comes at a price. Art Nouveau artists and artisans created a wide range of products; from delicate ceramics, glass, carved and gilt furniture to gold, silver, jewellery, illustration, posters and paintings. An example of one of the new forms to be explored was the electric lamp; artificial lighting (replacing candles, gas and oil) had just been invented and Art Nouveau artists responded with great originality, gaiety and freshness. There was a new generation of brilliant artists throughout Europe who willingly embraced the "new art" and in most large cosmopolitan cities they diligently worked away, thus contributing to this vibrant new aesthetic. In many European capitals one could find highly gifted artists working in a broadly unified, yet eclectic style. To list but a select handful would include the likes of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Aubrey Beardsley, and Archibald Knox in Britain and Emile Galle, Louis Majorelle, Hector Guimard, René Lalique and Alfons Maria Mucha in France. In Belgium one had artists of a singular vision working such as Victor Horta, Henry Van De Velde, Gustave Serrurier-Bovy and Philippe Wolfers. In Germany and Austria one had a cast of stellar artists such as Peter Behrens, Richard Riemerschmid, Bruno Paul, Herman Obrist, Otto Eckmann, Joseph Maria Olbrich, Koloman Moser, Josef Hoffmann and Otto Wagner amongst others. While in America one also had artists and architects such as Louis H. Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Comfort Tiffany and George E. Ohr. There were too many creative geniuses working in too many artistic centers to mention here, but suffice it to say that they all contributed greatly to this new style. Art Nouveau was an art movement with a social conscience; for many of its exponents naively believed that they could enhance the living conditions of the masses by bringing beauty into their lives, yet this noble goal sadly failed. The primary reason these idealistic artists were not entirely successful in this aim is that the objects they made were usually handcrafted and time consuming to make, and thus quite expensive. When Art Nouveau products were cheaply available to the average person they were invariably mass produced; and hence rather tacky, cheap and chintzy. The truth of the matter is that Art Nouveau chiefly appealed to the petty bourgeoisie, the aristocracy and the intelligentsia with its exquisite craftsmanship and daringly modernist sensibilities. In Paris the Exposition Universelle De 1900 was held to great acclaim with artists, artisans, architects and the curious public flocking from all over the world to its monumental gates. However in the next several years Art Nouveau would diminish in quality of vision and popularity with many artists brief careers fading or moving on to more productive endeavours. The influence of Art Nouveau on the arts slowly declined after the first decade of the 20th Century; and it increasingly came to be seen as decadent, neurotic and unhealthy with its wildly organic forms and erotically charged overtones. If one moves forward fifty years or so into the 1960s and 70s; Art Nouveau's fortunes underwent a resurgence of interest with a youthful and curious generation more than willing to embrace this misunderstood and much maligned movement, the tide had indeed turned.Gabriele Fahr-Becker has written a book that is intellectually consuming, and with impeccable research it will keep one rapt for many hours with its fascinating history of Art Nouveau. From beginning to end this comprehensive volume will inspire and exhilarate with its tale of these pioneering artists attempts to reimbue the Western decorative arts and architecture with a new spirit of modernity. Art Nouveau is nowadays more popular than ever with many important books written on the subject, and today Art Nouveau objets d'art are highly collectible and sought after by the discerning art lover. Art Nouveau laid the ground for fully fledged modernism in the decorative arts, design and architecture that was to arise a little later in the 20th Century. So although Art Nouveau may seem quaint, quirky and strange to some this style has been nothing short of a revelation to many; and with hope this volume will inspire in you an abiding passion for all things Art Nouveau.

By Shannon Leigh O'Neil German art historian Gabriele Fahr-Becker gives us an immensely rich and vital resource, arguably the most comprehensive book of its kind. In its 420 pages, she fully documents Art Nouveau's origins from Japan to the Middle East, the Guilds to the Aesthetic/Arts & Crafts movements and the Pre-Raphaelites to the Symbolists. The scope of Art Nouveau is evident in its geography, the categorical basis on which the author presents an extensive range of material -- not only from Paris, Brussels and Vienna but also from Glasgow, the rest of Europe and America. Appropriate for both scholars and a popular audience, it is densely packed with hundreds of gorgeous color illustrations. Its special features include mini-biographies of artists associated with Art Nouveau and a complete glossary of terms. Conscientious and thorough, Fahr-Becker gives due attention to Art Nouveau's sensuous language, explaining how "...plants and animal symbols, more eloquent than words, became the emblems of eroticism." In Art Nouveau, she implies that there could be decadence without obscenity, as art went "back to nature". During the period, there were still "symbol's of man's (sic) sexual confusion" for which "Sigmund Freud tried to offer a remedy ... through psychoanalysis." She is careful to emphasize, however, that in the realm of the senses, Art Nouveau struggled to pick up where the Pre-Raphaelites left off, "with a fusion of eroticism and spiritual nobility."

Excellent Book By Marissa R Schwalm Shark Tooth Hunting on the Carolina Coast is a book that displays a clear expertise but is done so not with academic or stiff language but instead as if Oliphant is speaking right into your ear guiding you along the way. Her many years of experience—demonstrated by carefully selected and nicely displayed photographs—are given to the reader in almost tender terms; it is clear that she loves the hunt and wants you to love it too. I first purchased this book to guide me on my trip to Wilmington this summer, but am looking forward to buying additional copies for gifts this Christmas! All lovers of the beach should own this book.

Here is the thought of Carl Gustav Jung, the great Swiss psychologist, applied to the real world of the therapist's office. Dr. Wilmer explores the Jungian approach in a deceptively light style, bringing not only his years of experience but his special wit, wisdom, and skills as an illustrator. Anyone interested in the process of psychotherapy will gain a new understanding and new insights, enjoying many a chuckle along the way. Psychotherapy opens up wounds that, if mishandled, may become worse or may not heal. It almost goes without saying that any method of treatment can be misused. The intimacy of psychotherapy and the power projected upon the therapist make that potential misuse especially dangerous. This book highlights ways for both patient and therapist to recognize when the wrong direction has been taken and alerts them to positive ways of coping with such problems, ways in which what might have gone wrong is turned into what can be most helpful in psychological growth. The focus of this book is not traditional psychopathology, reductive analysis or big interpretations. It is about what is and what facilities an I-Thou relationship. It is about ordinary courtesy and human concern without sentimental shibboleths.

In the years since I have several times taught survey courses on Jung - kind of Jung 101-- and always turn to this book as a readily accessible introduction. Wilmer's whimsical drawings, sense of humor and easy way of explaining Jungian concepts makes Practical Jung a good entry point into further study.

By Constance Avery-Clark At times entertaining, at times hilarious, but always practical, this is the foremost book for both laypersons and mental health practitioners to get introduced to, or further enlightened with regard to, the psychology of Carl Jung. No level of reader will be disappointed. The illutrations are helpful and the text is reader-friendly.

By the author of the acclaimed novel Go With Me, which has now been adapted to a film starring Anthony Hopkins and Julia Stiles, a modern reimagining of Doctor Faustus, set in Castle Freeman Jr.’s trademark depiction of rural Vermont.

In his quiet Vermont home, a man named Taft sits and wonders what’s missing from his life. He’s at a loss until a strange voice startles him from the rocking chair, where a stranger has seemingly appeared out of nowhere: well-dressed and smooth-talking, this man offers Taft the chance to have anything he’s ever wanted―for a price. So begins The Devil in the Valley, the latest novel from critically acclaimed author Castle Freeman, Jr. Placed in his classic setting of rural Vermont, Freeman gives us a story that touches on temptation and greed, and explores what we’re willing to trade to obtain the things we most desire. A memorable story that explores the supernatural while staying rooted deeply in our world, The Devil in the Valley is a powerful novel from a master at his craft.

The Devil in the Valley: A Novel, by Castle Freeman Jr.

Review “If the devil is in the details, then the devil has met his match. Castle Freeman, Jr. conjures an intricate tete-a-tete with the devil into a Vermont home-brew of brimstone and beneficence. Fast-paced, compulsive, The Devil in the Valley leaves you wanting more. Temptation on the page.” (Gregory Maguire, bestselling author of Wicked and After Alice)“A Faustian tale in (Castle Freeman's) inimitable style. Full of laconic dialogue and waggish asides on contemporary culture,  this is a thoroughly enjoyable read from the ever-inventive Freeman” (Booklist)“Castle Freeman has somehow infused The Devil in the Valley with a mysterious energy that keeps a reader eagerly turning pages while desperately hoping the book will go on and on. This is fine and deeply enjoyable writing.” (David Huddle, author of The Faulkes Chronicle)“Neither sentimental nor nihilistic, that tone has never sounded more clearly than in Freeman's new novel, The Devil in the Valley, in which he gives the Faust legend a woodchuck spin. [Freeman's] great strengths are in dialogue and omniscient narration that sounds like dialogue, or like expert campfire storytelling.” (Seven Days)“The tale of Langdon Taft's hellish skirmish is a heavenly read.” (Brattleboro Reformer)

About the Author Castle Freeman, Jr. is the author of four other novels, including All That I Have and Go With Me, two collections of short stories, and many essays and other nonfiction. His stories have been mentioned or included in Best American Short Stories and other major collections. He lives in southeastern Vermont.

Novel set in VERMONT (a pact with the devil) By TripFiction A very well and amusingly written update of the Faustian legend by Marlowe… and not, I am pleased to say, as black as I feared it might be. A retired and somewhat crabby alcoholic schoolteacher in rural Vermont is ‘befriended’ by Dangerfield (‘the account man, the closer…’) on behalf of the Devil. The schoolteacher, Langdon Taft, is offered anything he wants in this world before he is transported to hell on Columbus Day – just seven months hence. He accepts the contract. He is a pretty obvious rogue, and our presumption is that he will choose a younger age, power, wealth and sex (not necessarily in that order…). He does not believe in the Devil or Hell and thinks he will be able to contrive an escape from the pact.He also does not behave as we think he might. Instead of hedonistic pursuits he pays a very sick child’s hospital bills, gives a wife beater a lesson he will not forget, prevents a dodgy bank foreclosing on a local farmer, rescues a drowning girl, and even attacks school bus bullies. In short he uses his contract to perform good deeds. Which poses a real dilemma. Does he deserve to go to Hell? The devil would argue that the powers he has given him have enabled him to get pleasure from his deeds – and that he deserves to pay for this pleasure he would not otherwise have had. He also had the reward of a flirtation with an attractive female State Trooper (though more chaste than Dangerfield, who organised the event, had planned for it to be…). Taft would argue that he has successfully fooled the Devil by diverting his power to do good and help the community in which he lives. That he has won. Then there is the parallel story of Calpurnia, a 98 year old woman in a hospice waiting to die… Gradually her story merges with that of Langdon Taft as we head for the conclusion. The Devil In The Valley is not a weighty tome. It is just 192 pages of not too small type – I read it in two sittings totalling a couple of hours. It is a simple idea, well executed – and it works. I enjoyed the book.Over on our blog, we chat to the author about writing and more: [...]

By Discerning Customer Having enjoyed Go With Me and All That I Have, two of Freeman's earlier novels, I was happy to hear about this new one. A retelling of the Faust story set in the Vermont hills that Freeman has made his own, the book is funny, engaging and wise. What if, when the devil offered you anything you wanted in exchange for your soul, you decided to help someone other than yourself? Given the story that serves as its starting point, this novel is lighter and a lot more fun than you'd expect. Yes, we have a demon and his henchmen, but we also have smart locals, brave old-timers and a sense that, in the end, maybe we all don't have to wind up in hell if we look out for one another.

The writing is inconspicuous, which is a good thing, unless it's supposed to utterly transport you, and very few writers are capable of that. The plot, a variation on a classic conceit, is carried along at a plodding pace, and while the gimmick of giving all the local characters the last names of presidents of the US may have entertained the author, it is utterly distracting to the reader. This novel did not need "cute".

Ebook PDF The Magnificent Third Rail: A Retrospective, by Roberto Pinchas

An experimental novel best described as late-night channel surfing through the mind of a homeless man. A highly inaccurate portrait of life in New York City during 2015. You'll find that no one in this book is sane or acts anything like an actual human being would. The situations portrayed run the gamut from the somewhat implausible to the entirely absurd. Don't trust a word of it. This description might be lying to you too in some way or another. It may also be read as a mystery. The mystery being: what's the point of it all?

PDF Ebook Choosing Terror: Virtue, Friendship, and Authenticity in the French Revolution, by Marisa Linton

Choosing Terror: Virtue, Friendship and Authenticity in the French Revolution examines the leaders of the French Revolution - Robespierre and his fellow Jacobins - and particularly the gradual process whereby many of them came to 'choose terror'. These men led the Jacobin Club between 1789 and 1794, and were attempting to establish new democratic politics in France. Exploring revolutionary politics through the eyes of these leaders, and against a politicalbackdrop of a series of traumatic events, wars, and betrayals, Marisa Linton portrays the Jacobins as complex human beings who were influenced by emotions and personal loyalties, as well as by their revolutionary ideology. The Jacobin leaders' entire political careers were constrained by their need to be seen by their supporters as 'men of virtue', free from corruption and ambition, and concerned only with the public good. In the early stages of the Revolution, being seen as 'men of virtue' empowered the Jacobin leaders, and aided them in their efforts to forge their political careers. However, with the onset of war, there was a growing conviction that political leaders who feigned virtue were 'the enemy within',secretly conspiring with France's external enemies. By year two, the year of the Terror, the Jacobin identity had become a destructive force: in order to demonstrate their own authenticity, they had to be seen to act virtuously, and be prepared, if the public good demanded it, to denounce anddestroy their friends, and even to sacrifice their own lives. This desperate thinking resulted in the politicians' terror, one of the most ruthless of all forms of terror during the Revolution. Choosing Terror seeks neither to cast blame, nor to exonerate, but to understand the process whereby such things can happen.

Review "Marisa Linton's new book is in the best traditions of such careful, detailed, biographically-conscious evaluations... resolutely both biographical and contextual, refracting an impressive breadth of learning about the cultures of late 18th-century France." --Reviews in History

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. The French Revolution and Greek Tragedy: Deja vu By GDP 'Choosing Terror' by Marisa Linton is an extraordinary book - 'The Terror' is the subject of many books, yet she manages to bring a new and credible perspective to the violent aspect of the French Revolution. History (Gk: historia) is the product of "finding out" and narrative, and Linton excels at both. For a lay historian with an interest in the French Revolution this is a great addition to the search for perspective and knowledge. The exacting focus is upon the individuals of the French Revolution (specifically the Jacobins and the factions thereof) rather than the larger swells and waves of late-18th Century French history (which serve as the broader context of Jacobin conduct). The revolutionaries assumed institutional power in the vacuum left when the monarchy (and a brief constitutional monarchy) failed. Virtue (an active and selfless concern for fellow citizens) developed as a substitute for the court-centered practices of combining power, status, and privilege with the exercise of duties. 'Noblesse oblige' was no longer seen as noble, but rather, for good reason, as corrupt and venal. The revolutionaries had to be seen as altruistically dedicated only to the good of their nation and fellow citizens. We see the principals of the Revolution motivated by an admixture of ambition, principle, and, importantly, fear. The fear these men felt (and the politicians in this narrative are all men - though women such as Charlotte Corday appear) was the wrath of 'the people' they had intended to serve as well as the threat of the counter-revolution, whether it be the spread of the civil war in the Vendee or assassination by Parisian Royalists. Ultimately, however, the culture of virtue that was created became a double-edged sword that also created the most immediate and likely source of fear ... death at the hands of fellow politicians (and often former, or even current, 'friends').Once treason and its consequences were institutionalized, targets of 'the Terror' were increasingly fellow politicians accused of inauthentic virtue, i.e., feigning virtue while not acting selflessly on behalf of the nation (what Linton labels the 'Politician's Terror' was a consequence of laws, such as the ominously titled Law of Suspects, dated Sept. 17, 1793). All that was required were doubts and allegations; proof ... not so much. This 'Politician's Terror' became the meat-grinder that consumes successive factions of the Jacobins, including Robespierre himself.Linton's account postures the lives of Robespierre et al as characters in a Greek Tragedy - as they themselves are consumed by the cult of "virtue" they had helped create. The story Linton tells is vivid and dramatic through the use of the characters' own words (letters, diaries, and speeches) to create portraits of persons living in fear as a result of a series of choices that ironically converted virtue into a killing machine.Like Greek Tragedy, 'Choosing Terror' has timeless lessons for our world, as well. As Linton writes in the Acknowledgements, "To understand the French revolutionaries is to understand ourselves better."One question about the French Revolution worth pondering is, "Was the French Revolution possible without 'The Terror'"? ... or another, "Was there a viable alternative to the culture of virtue that became embedded in the politics of revolutionary France?" It would have required a political mechanism to create compromise and consensus, a deliberate and oft time-consuming process not easily accepted by a frothy public nor "virtuous" politicians.America, 2013: to quote Yogi Berra, "Its like deja vu all over again."

By Kelly Lawrence I was completely surprised by this brilliant collaboration of real-life art and storytelling. This book is a descriptive, amazingly witty, creative, and heartfelt take on the (sometimes secret) pains and sacred desires of a woman's evolving heart and mind. The stories reminded me that in life, you don't always get a choice what changes are imposed on you day-to-day but you can choose to be honest about your feelings, take note of the lessons learned and do whatever it takes to make your soul truly happy and able to move forward. To the authors, thank you for sharing your raw and inspiring truth. If it means anything, I was blessed.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Thought Provoking By Amazon Customer I can't say enough about this book. Though I personally have not suffered through the tragedy of divorce, I found this to be a very thought provoking read. As a woman who sometimes experiences self doubt, reading through the journey of these women was simply inspiring. I found quite a bit of truth in "Rambling Thoughts of Mindless Minds." I also found R x : Girlfriends, Getaways, and Cocktails to be a fun, entertaining, and engrossing read. All in all it was an excellent book and I'd recommend it to any woman who finds herself on a new path and is looking for a fresh perspective.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Not Just for the divorced must read for women By Amazon Customer This book is not just for divorced people it's for all women. It had a great message, but it does not spare your feelings. My favorite poem is " A Shiner". It deals with real life and how hard it is to heal emotional scars. This is a book to read if you want to change your life. Every life lesson is a step to recovery. I will read it again.

Excerpt from The History of Cuba, Vol. 1It is my purpose in these volumes to write a History of Cuba. The title may imply either the land and its natural conditions, or the people and the nation which inhabit it. It in fact implies both, and to both I shall address myself, though it will appropriately be with the latter rather than with the former that the narrative will be most concerned. For it is with Cuba as with other countries: In the last supreme analysis the people make the history of the land. Apart from the people, it is true, the Island of Cuba is of unusual interest. There are few countries of similar extent comparable with it in native variety, charm and wealth. There are few which contribute more, actually and potentially, to the world's supplies of greatly used products. One of the most universally used and prized vegetable products became first known to mankind from Cuba, and there to this day is most profusely and most perfectly grown and prepared; while another, one of the most universally used and essential articles of food, is there produced in its greatest abundance. There also may be found an immense number and bewildering variety of the most serviceable articles in both the vegetable and mineral kingdoms, in noteworthy profusion and perfection, together with possibilities and facilities for a comparable development of the animal kingdom.Nor is the geographical situation of the island less favorable or less inviting than its natural resources. Lying just within the Torrid Zone, it has a climate which combines the fecund influences of the tropics with the agreeable moderation of the Temperate Zones.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Until next time.. By Trish R. Soul Scorched part 1Usually I just have a quick look at Facebook, because I only have a few authors I follow and that’s it. Anyway, when book 1 started Warrick was on Facebook and he was wondering at all the crap people put on there about themselves so I got up and looked. Wow, does anyone really care what time someone has to be at work? Or what someone is writing right now? Or what someone is having for breakfast, lunch or dinner, or what their dog or cat, or bird, or snake or gerbil is doing? Warrick was right; humans are strange and fascinating creatures.I like Warrick, he seems like a big dragon who’s a little shy. But I’m sure Darcy will help with that.I just love when Rhi shows at the mansion, using her veil of invisibility as she scopes out all the rooms. But I just hate that jerk, Balladyn. I mean really? Does he think she could really love him after all the horrible torture he put her through? That Fae is truly demented. Soul Scorched part 2I have to tell you I was getting real tired of Darcy saying she’d do it again, help to get Ulrik’s magic unbound, no matter what Warrick or Rhi told her about how he could destroy the world if he ever got his magic back and could shift into a dragon again. One minute she’d be concerned about what she did and the next she wouldn’t give a damn because Ulrik was so unhappy. Really?Rhi is thinking too much about Balladyn and that’s not good. Also, I really hate Ulrik’s uncle, Mikkel. He’s such a power hungry creep.Oh, it was nice spending a little bit of time with Kellen and Denae. I love her Texas drawl.Soul Scorched part 3Well, Warrick and Darcy finally went-at-it. Boy howdy, did they ever… Umm, moving on now. I can see why Warrick wanted to take Darcy to Dreagan but there was too much inner turmoil going on with Warrick to suit me. I mean, he just had to take on 30 Darks and he can’t take her to her little apartment where she’d become a prisoner, just to stay alive. And what the hell could Con do anyway? Ask her over and over again what she knew about Ulrik? It’s not like he would torture her, for chrissakes. Con may be bossy but he’s not cruel.Personally, I think these King books have gotten a little silly. If Con and all the other Kings think Ulrik is evil and that he’s trying to unbind his magic so he can kill Con and wake up his Silvers so they can kill every human on earth, wouldn’t it make sense to just kill Ulrik and be done with it? I’m not willing to give up any of the Dragon Kings but this story is getting to ridiculous. Every time 4 new novellas come out I keep asking myself that same question, why don’t you just kill Ulrik off and move on?Soul Scorched part 4Yeah, I’m not really believing that Ulrik stabbed someone (not telling you who)… It just doesn’t make any sense to me. And I’m glad Warrick got over his fear of Darcy being his mate. His reasoning was kinds crazy anyway. And I’m very disappointed in Con. He was letting his hatred for Ulrik get the best of his thinking. Anyway, that’s it for this foursome and DG just added new names of Kings that stories will be written about. Not sure about this anymore.

What can I say and what would be spoilers???So, I will say this was THE BEST part 4 in ANY of Donna Grant's books. Once it becomes the entire Soul Scorched Book, it might just be the BEST of the Dark Kings Series.. I won't say it is the best because there is more to come. I will say it could be the best so far! And we all know that is saying a lot!!There are betrayals galore. I will say that.. and those making the betrayals are a total surprise.Darcy has been making choices based on erroneous facts and the Kings? Well they don't get the facts either.Things look like they might be starting to make sense and then Donna tilts the playing board. I am back to not having a clue as to who is good and who is bad. Well the Dark are bad, aren't they? This was one of those man how can this book be over books... Totally delightful!!I don't want to wait until November for the next Dragon King Book... Good think Donna has a 1001 Dark Nights book out in August. But that's too long to wait as well..Just a great ending to this fabulous book.ShauniThis review is based on the ARC of Soul Scorched: Part 4, provided by netgalley

Can War keep Darcy save from the Dark and will she be safe from Con.Darcy knows that she needs to trust War and the others but she doesn't know them. Ulrik still wants Darcy but I am not sure why anymore. Rhi is so lost and I fear that the Darkness will consume her soon. There are so many players at the moment it is hard to know who to trust. War cares for Darcy but he doesn't want a mate but he will need to make up his mind or he could lose her for good. What is Ulrik's end game I know that he wants revenge on Con and the other dragon kings but there is something else going on. His uncle is going to be a problem let's wait and see what happens. I thought that Ulrik had some good still left but after what he did I would say no.I have so many questions, who is the stranger that Rhi sees at the club? Where did V go? What is Con's game as he is willing to go against all of the kings to kill Ulrik. Can't wait for the next series as the ending sucked. Donna you are a wicked lady but I know that it will be worth the wait. I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review via Netgalley.

Barbara Hepworth began her career as a sculptor in London in the late 1920s, and quickly established herself in the vanguard of the modern movement. Caught in St Ives by the outbreak of the war, she went on to spend thirty-six years - exactly half her life - in the town. Hepworth came to value the sense of community she found in St Ives, but it was this very rootedness that allowed her to develop sculpture for the national and international stage. Hepworth remains a central figure in British twentieth-century art, and this book describes her life and work, giving an up-to-date survey of the contexts in which she can currently be understood. Penelope Curtis describes the impetus behind the formal clarity of her sculpture, an attempt at 'holding the beautiful thought' amidst the difficult times in which she lived. Reissued in the brand new hardback British Artists format this is an overview of life and key works of one of Britain's most loved modernist artists. It includes full colour photographs of Hepworth's most famous sculptures.

For Wyn Rhys, Director of the Special Police Oversight Agency, justice is not an idea, but a destination. Charged with investigating those who are meant to serve and protect, Rhys is at once a pragmatist and a maverick, intent on changing the world of oversight while fending off challenges from powerful political opponents. When an artist staging a demonstration dies in a stand-off with police in a crowded shopping mall, videos taken by bystanders begin to circulate online. And Rhys is confronted by an outraged citizenry, an uncooperative police chief, and the desire to protect the vulnerable orphan child of the dead man. At the same time, he finds himself wrestling with his own fixation on a woman from the high-profile case that made his career and a family life that has begun to fray. Blue Suicide is rooted in the noir tradition but bristles with a new urgency as it interrogates how our technologically advanced society understands concepts of truth, justice and ultimately, compassion.
