Heeding the urgent call of the wild, seasoned adventurer and historian, Jerry Ellis, retraces the 2,000 mile route of the Oregon Trail/Pony Express Trail by foot, horseback, covered wagon, and canoe. The fast-paced easy-read is interwoven with many vintage photos and crucial nuggets of American history, the short-lived Pony Express replaced by the telegraph as the USA Western Expansion ached for quick communication between New York and San Francisco. Whether it's branding cattle with cowboys and cowgirls, crawling into the earthen underground home of the Rabbit Man, sleeping with hobos, panning for gold, becoming a Brother to the Serpent of the Sioux, discovering a piece of the original telegraph wire, carving a wooden pony by his campfire beneath the stars, or falling in love, the author offers insights into the American psyche, one that wiped out millions of buffaloes and Native Americans to become the strongest, if most complex and questionable, nation on Earth. Famous writers' praise for Jerry Ellis' book, Walking the Trail, One Man's Journey Along the Cherokee Trail of Tears: Dee Brown, author of Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee: "Reading Jerry Ellis's account of his modern-day trek along the old Cherokee Trail of Tears is better than receiving a series of letters from a perceptive, generous-hearted and imaginative traveler." Jim Harrison, author of Legends of Fall that was made into the movie staring Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins: "...is a wonderful book which should be read by anyone interested in our history or Native Americans or very good writing." Bestselling author, Tony Hillerman: "Come along on the Trail with Jerry Ellis. You'll love every step of it."

By gbear "Reliving the Old West" by Jerry Ellis is about the 2,000 mile journey of the Oregon Trail and the Pony Express riders who dealt with unbelievable hardships to do their jobs. The author decides to take a modern Wagon Train into the past where you learn about Buffalo Bill, Jessie James and other events of that time You meet the folks he encounters and gets to know along the way. Each one contributing a different perspective about their journeys. This book is a page-turner in which the reader wants to absorb more and more of our past history. It also covers a second journey....the journey of the author who has some issues that parallel the events on the Trail and help him come to terms with himself. It is a very informative book that includes pictures from Western days. I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend it for anyone who has an interest in the history of the Old West and/or is on a personal journey of self-discovery themselves.

By Melvina Anne Goodman I read Jerry book on traveling the old Pony Express route. He starts out with a wagon train and some not so nice people who are to me what you would call want be cowboys or cowgirl. There are some nice and warm people on the train to.He learns of hated and bigotry still exist in our society today. It's when he leaves the train and sits out on foot does he find the true beauty and excitement of how the rider felt. He finds people who are willing to share home food and water and even a ride with him. I love reading this book because when I was younger I often dressed up like a cowgirl and wanted to be like them. Each one of us has their own journey in life and Jerry journey is one of a traveler. So travel on Traveling man.But don't forget Rabbit man who lives in a hole in the ground but who is very humble and willing to share even a candy bar with you.

Beautiful story of a man's journey across the American West By Patrick O'Keefe Jerry Ellis retraced the route of the Pony Express from Missouri to California. He started by joining a wagon train, continued by horseback, walked (a lot), hitchhiked and canoed. He wove his experiences on the trail together with historical accounts from the times. He had a never ending series of encounters with heartwarming and colorful people but also walked many miles alone appreciating the deserts and mountains of the West. It was a beautiful book.
