Morita The work by Howard Schatz as shown in his collections of 25 years of his photography is a wonder and inspiring. For those who look at pictures, they will be stunned at the variety of images he has done over the years.Some are stark, like images of the homeless and prisoners but despite their desperate straights, these people are in he gives them moments of dignity. He has photographed beauty in many of his images. The images in water, circ du solel and fashion are treasure depicted in the compendium. There is much humor in his work such as those of actors being asked crazy questions and their response.The technical skills are quite apparent. The pictures of athletes running, swinging a tennis racquet or giving a punch shows his technical talent. He has amazing skills with the use of the flash and studio lighting, One doesn’t really appreciate the lighting because the great pictures take you in.What really blows me away is his creative genius. How did he think to make DNA out of human models? Or the spider? Or the alphabet? The one images that stands out for me is the picture of Ben Kingsly. It is a shadow of the the actor and a silloete of his head but you immediately know it is picture of the actor.My favorite collections are those of Circ Du Soleil. He’s captured the whimsy of the performers. The colors and composition are awe inspiring. The are collections of performers shot in ways one might not think of doing but they are simply eye candy. A solitary shot of one performer in a body hugging, striped black and white leotard, looking at the camera with sly smile is my favorite.The 25 year collection of his work show the incredible talent. What is most striking as one goes through the two volumes the tremendous variety of pictures that he has done. It’s a treasure.

Howard Schatz is an inspiration to me and to many who love photography and the process of creating images. The fact that this period of 25 years covered by this box set began when Dr. Schatz was in his 50s is further inspiration. Life is full of adventures, surprises and delights. Nearly every page of this work provides a visual adventure, a surprise or a delight. Given an initial career as an accomplished eye doctor, it is clear that he cared that people could see. His work produced during his second career as a photographer provides a gift to all who can see.As a two volume set, a first reaction might be that this is expensive. Loving his work, I ordered early and received number 20 in this signed edition. Having since spent many, many hours absorbed in these two volumes, I am now convinced that it is an exceptional value. One might have to buy 16 or more individual books to get access to the selection and range of styles shared in this two volume set. It is also meticulously produced. Every image printed to perfection and the binding being a soft vinyl allows the book to open nearly flat, presenting each image comfortably for viewing. There are so many images in this set, that it requires multiple sittings to get through comfortably.Howard Schatz captures the human form with exceptional talent. Photographs of faces, bodies, and even abstract parts of the body...some still, many in motion...in the air, on the ground, in the water; each images invites reflection and a deeper look. This is a book of art.A successful photograph requires a good subject, creative vision from the photographer and technical excellence in execution. This volume demonstrates creative and technical innovation which evolved over many years. After enjoying the image itself, it is a joy to imagine how it was made and to learn in that way as well.Enjoy!

A must have for any serious photographer By Marc Safran Some wise teacher, at a photography workshop a while ago, said if you want to truly learn about taking compelling images that one should avoid dwelling on technical books of lighting, cameras and the whatnot -- but instead delve into books showing great photographic art itself. See what comprises a great image -- it's composition, subject, emotion, color and tension -- and then think about incorporating this into one's own work.Perhaps no other contemporary photographer, to my experience, has a body of work to inspire other photographers than Howard Schatz. His work is captivating, sublime and alluring. In his studies of various concepts -- the homeless, body knots, dancers, fashion, liquid light, pregnancy, portraiture, athletes -- he presents one stunning and uniquely creative photo after another, after another.How fortunate that Glitterati has assembled what are best works of his prodigious collection of images. While I realize the books are expensive, they are so beautiful in production and rich in content that the price is imminently worth the cost of purchase. I have poured over the extensive two volumes multiple times, studying and trying to learn from their beauty. How worthwhile and incredibly important a collection it is.Hands down these are the most important art books I have ever owned. For less than the cost of a mediocre lens, these volumes will propel your thinking about photography to a new dimension. And, most importantly, they are a pleasure for the soul, eye and heart.
