An insightful novel of everyday life, for anyone who's ever wondered whether enlightenment really is compatible with the daily commute Ed is stuck in a rut—his part-time "career" is going nowhere, his love life's a joke, and his wallet's always empty. The thing about a rut, though, is at least you know where you are. So when Ed runs into an old acquaintance and is sucked into a drama of street crime and high-stakes property dealings, he turns to the principles that once served him well. Except—he's not sure if he can still trust them, especially as his Buddhist practice is a bit on the rusty side. This is an urban story with a twist and a wry appreciation of the challenges we face every day—whether we're muddling by, or, like Ed, suffering from a severe case of the bodhisattva blues.

A book you will find difficult to put down By Dennis Merimsky "Enjoy life, win" angry Ed tells himself , as his Buddhist chanting forces him to confront the reality of his lazy life. Yet it seems that Ed lurches from crisis to crisis completely unable to fulfil his own maxim. This book is a rivetting tour de force which is hard to put down. I don't want to spoil the story so i will just say that the plot unravels in a most compelling way, forcing Ed the protagonist to deal with layer after layer of unintended consequences of his own and other peoples actions. You don't have to be a Buddhist to enjoy this excellent book, but if you are , you will be in for a treat, because Eddie Canfor-Dumas injects a great deal of Buddhist wisdom into this story and does it in a most natural way. i reached the last page and was ready for more , I really wanted the story to continue. Perhaps there will be a sequel.

He can weave his words in such a way that you want to read more, dig deeper and find the meaning - the message. Hi is not force-feeding or simplifying but just making the characters come so close to you that you can smell the cabernet. He avoids easy ways and takes you to a roller coaster of events, emotions and thoughts that you don't expect but in the end you ate happy that he wrote them as he did. There are not many novels with a modern Buddhist angle without naivety and cliches. Edward Canfor-Dumas has written a gem, a Buddhist novel for the rest of us. I hope in his next novel he also explains what is the Gohonzon that was mentioned. Need to google it while waiting the third in the series because trilogy is obviously in the making. Can't wait to get it!
