“So this is the little lady who made this big war,” marvelled Abraham Lincoln when he first met Harriet Beecher Stowe. Noel Gerson explores the life of this fascinating woman who literally changed the course of American history with her book Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Harriet Beecher Stowe reveals a towering literary figure who was also a remarkable woman, a crusading feminist, and a woman who led a life more dramatic than anything she wrote. In an age when women were usually confined to the kitchen, the bedroom, and the parlour, Harriet Beecher Stowe argued emancipation with President Lincoln, had an extraordinary woman-to-woman relationship with Queen Victoria, and was regarded by Emile Zola as a comrade-in-arms in their separate crusades for a better world. Her super-abundant energy and refreshing humour enabled her to combine the duties of a devoted wife and mother of five with a renowned literary career and to become in the process one of the greatest celebrities of the nineteenth century. ‘Harriet Beecher Stowe’ is an impressive biography of a literary giant who changed the course of history forever. Noel Bertram Gerson (1913-1988) was a prolific American author, who wrote 325 books under his own name and under several pseudonyms. He channeled his own wartime experience in military intelligence into many of his novels, as well as writing widely about American history. His titles include ‘Liner’, ‘Daughter of Earth and Water: A Biography of Mary Shelley’, ‘The Conqueror’s Wife’ and ‘I’ll Storm Hell: A Novel of Mad Anthony Wayne’. Sturdy little biography of a remarkable woman By Librarian Harriet Beecher's fame is more than "merely" being the author of UNCLE TOM'S CABIN (though given that book's tremendous impact on American history, that would be fame enough). But Gerson also includes other facets of her fascinating life, and these reveal her role in a notable family as a seeker of religious truth, an abolitionist and advocate for human rights, an early social activist and feminist, a world-famous author and popular public speaker, and a truly remarkable woman in an era where women were not expected to be so visible and outspoken.Originally published in 1976 as a 189-page hardcovered book by Praeger, this is a handsomely-formatted, unaltered, 2015 ebook reprint by Endeavour Press. So bear in mind, for better or worse, it's still a 39-year-old book (as is all the content in it).The very beginning of Gerson's sturdy little biography is not exactly a grabber and may tend to be a tad off-putting, especially for a book meant for a popular, as opposed to a scholarly, audience. But as Gerson progresses he gains his stride, and the account becomes more comfortable to read, coming across not unlike a well-paced but highly literate novel. There are no footnotes, only a bibliography (of now all older works). All of Stowe's books receive comment, especially my personal favorite, THE MINISTER'S WOOING, which (being quite revealing of Stowe's personal religious quandries related to her Calvinist upbringing) receives substantial coverage.Though not necessarily the most in-depth or intensely analytical treatment of Stowe's life and accomplishments to be found, at a time when biographies frequently tend to be bloated and over-written, this is comfortably-wrought and still quite informative; it also has the added benefit of being enjoyable to read. Thus it serves as an excellent introductory (but by no means superficial) treatment about a person who rightly deserves to be better known than as "the little lady who started this big war." The Civil War was indeed quite BIG, but despite President Abraham Lincoln's famous remark, in all the ways that truly matter, Harriet Beecher Stowe was definitely no LITTLE lady.

Yet, Harriet Beecher Stowe's life was very dramatic, and I learned a lot of facts. This book is heavily researched and used a good deal of primary sources. However, it was not really deep and was very basic. Still this novel highlighted her accomplishments as well as her personal life. This author has definitely piqued my interest in Harriet Beecher Stowe, and I am going to research more about her life.(Note: I read an ARC copy of this book in courtesy of Netgalley.)

The second half of the book was a tedious hodge-podge of Stowe's words (taken from letters she wrote) mashed together. It would have been much better if the author had not tried to cram so many excerpts into his book.
