From the Back Cover PraiseChristian Clifford has captured the life and times of Fray Junipero Serra, The Apostle (soon to be Saint) of California. The book presents the humble and determined missionary's vision, historical accomplishments and work with the Native Americans in a clear and personal way. This book is a must-read for high school students in California's Catholic schools. Kathleen H. Aikenhead, President, William H. Hannon Foundation, Santa Monica, California Clifford has written a deeply personal and moving account of his search for the real Junípero Serra, a search rooted in primary sources. Responding to the intense questioning and challenges generated by the announcement of Serra's canonization by Pope Francis, Clifford pleads for a rational, empathetic understanding of Serra. Many modern critics will find the book disconcerting. Read this sympathetic study and make up your own mind. Jeffrey Burns, Ph.D., Retired Archivist, Archdiocese of San Francisco I found it an easy read and appreciated how well Christian Clifford synthesized complex issues that are both emotional and pertinent to understand why some would question and others be jubilant about Pope Francis' announcement to canonize Fray Junipero Serra a saint in the Catholic Church. Furthermore, Clifford enables the reader to utilize critical thinking skills based on well documented information and presents it in a concise work. My background is 30 years of Catholic secondary education with twenty years as principal and president. In my view, his book will serve Catholic students well in courses like California History, American History as well as in Church History. Also, I encourage Mission gift shops to carry the book. Rev. Thomas J. Elewaut, V.F., Pastor, San Buenaventura Mission, Ventura, California We advocates of Junípero Serra's earthly works have long awaited and fervently prayed for the canonization of this holy man. Since his veneration more than two centuries ago, much has been written about Serra. Christian Clifford offers a 21st-century perspective based on his research and devotion. Clifford's treatise, Saint Junípero Serra: Making Sense of the History and Legacy, is a keepsake as we celebrate Serra's sainthood in September 2015. Terry Ruscin, Author, Columnist, Photographer, Former editor, ¡Siempre Adelante!
About the Author Christian Clifford has been a teacher in the schools of the Archdiocese of San Francisco since 1996. He has taught grades 6-12. He has published in Catholic San Francisco and California Teacher.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An interesting, and well-researched book on Junipero Serra. By Jason Chorpening This book was an insightful and well-written book. It was interesting to see a man, often overlooked in California history, brought to life through the accounts, and stories that not many people know about. Christian Clifford's passion in the subject of Junipero Serra demonstrates not only in this narrative, but through much time-consuming it probably took to research on this man. Recommended to those who have a love for California history, and religious history.
