A gripping novel that explores Robert E. Lee’s 1862 Maryland campaign to win Southern independence. Written with close attention to historical events, Six Days in September follows Lee’s struggle against a powerful Federal foe while the men in his army battle starvation and the terror of combat. As the armies descend on the sleepy village of Sharpsburg, a local pastor and his nephew are confronted with the hardship of military occupation and the threatened destruction of their beloved town.

Six Days in September: A Novel of the 1862 Maryland Campaign, by Alexander B. Rossino

From the Back Cover Praise for Six Days in September "This page-turner of a novel about the Confederate perspective on the battles of South Mountain and Antietam provides the most vivid description I have read of the desperate plight of Southern forces after these bloody reverses." - James M. McPherson, author of Abraham Lincoln and the Pulitzer-prize-winning Battle Cry of Freedom

About the Author Alexander B. Rossino received his B.A. in History from Canisius College, in Buffalo, NY, and his PhD in History from Syracuse University. He worked at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum from 1994 to 2002 and is the author of numerous scholarly articles. His first book, Hitler Strikes Poland: Blitzkrieg, Ideology, and Atrocity, is an acclaimed history of racial-political policies implemented by the Third Reich during its 1939 invasion of Poland. His interest in the U.S Civil War dates from childhood and he long desired to write a novel that transcended the rigid boundaries of academic history. Six Days in September represents that combination of interest and desire.

By Geoffrey Megargee Alex Rossino has combined a firm grasp of history with a real flair for plot, character development, and tension. This is a really good read. People who know the campaign will be pleased, people who don't will be enlightened, and everyone will be pulled into the story. I read the manuscript and could not wait for each new chapter. My only regret is that it isn't longer.

Reading about the Civil War or the War for Southern Independence, depending upon your understanding of this tragic event, can sometime be a task. Most important, when writing a novel is the ability of the author to have a true understanding of the events. In this novel the author shows he has a passion for research into history that took place in Maryland in 1862. He gets the details of Robert E. Lee's campaign correct. It is obvious that he spent a great deal of time bringing the characters to life while remaining true to history. Like Jim Lehrer's "No Certain Rest", a novel is believable only if the facts are correct. Included in this novel are stories of the soldiers that fought during Lee's struggle against the Union army in Maryland. He also examines the experiences of the residents of Sharpsburg, Maryland. The end result is that you get the military perspective from the soldier's point of view but also witness the hardships faced by the civilians that were descended upon by two great armies. This includes the threatened destruction of the little town of Sharpsburg. This book is an honestlook at a small community that was forever changed by some of the bloodiest fighting this country has ever witnessed. Consider this a MUST read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An excellent read for all. No knowledge of history needed to get pulled into the story. By T Hogan An excellent read. I've read this book several times now, including some of the early drafts, and it just gets better each time. Mr. Rossino has put people into this well known campaign, and thus added an understanding of the human experience from the front-line soldiers, to the Generals, and to the people of Sharpsburg who were left to struggle with the resulting devastation. Fast paced, well researched, interesting and well-rounded characters, both historical and fictional, tell a story that is difficult to put down. Readers well versed in the Civil War will recognize the quality of historical detail, but anybody reading this book will find themselves pulled into an excellent read.

In 2013 Stephen Meyer’s book Darwin’s Doubt: The Explosive Origin of Animal Life and the Case for Intelligent Design became a national bestseller, provoking a wide-ranging debate about the adequacy of Darwinian theory to explain life’s history. In Debating Darwin’s Doubt: A Scientific Controversy that Can No Longer Be Denied, leading scholars in the intelligent design community respond to critiques of Meyer’s book and show that the core challenge posed by Meyer remains unanswered: Where did the influx of information essential to the creation of new body plans come from? In addition to ten chapters by Stephen Meyer, Debating Darwin’s Doubt also includes contributions from biologists Richard Sternberg, Douglas Axe, and Ann Gauger; philosopher of biology Paul Nelson; mathematicians William Dembski and David Berlinski; and Center for Science and Culture research coordinator Casey Luskin. In forty-four chapters, these contributing authors explore topics such as orphan genes, cladistics, small shelly fossils, protein evolution, the length of the Cambrian explosion, the God-of-the-Gaps objection to intelligent design, and criticisms raised by proponents of theistic evolution. Anyone who wants to understand the cutting-edge of current scientific debates over modern Darwinian theory needs to read this book.

The debate over the glaring problems with the theory of Evolution continues By Rover This book is a collection of short essays from various experts who have the courage to discuss the problems surrounding the theory of Evolution and expose the tactics of self-appointed gatekeepers of thought who attack skeptics and misrepresent their ideas rather than debating them or addressing their ideas.Like the priests who attacked Galileo to defend Aristotle's mistakes, modern priests who control the Academy use their influenced to dismiss data that conflicts with their chosen world view and try to silence skeptics. The debate is over, they insist. But in fact, Darwinian evolution is still debated. It's debated among scientists and philosophers with open minds, the kind of men and women who allowed the theory of Evolution to be heard in the first place. And in this book, the skeptics put Darwin's priests to shame, once again.

Companion to Darwin's Doubt By Layne Zyler This book is organized around nine sections comprising a total of 44 chapters, with each section addressing a category of criticism or a major critic of Stephan Meyer's "Darwin's Doubt". It is composed by seven contributors, each with a different perspective and writing style. From the book's introduction "...Yes, of course many unserious thinkers too have joined the 'mob' arrayed against Meyer’s book." (you can see some good examples of this from the one star reviews--the well-practiced authors of which seem to have made a career of hurling disgustingly uncivil snarks at all things not attesting to the by now thoroughly discredited Darwinian fallacy)A full section deals with the review of one Nick Matzke, who published his error-riddled, Ayala'd critique--after obviously having never read the book--and which review curiously provided a feeding frenzy of material for Jerry Coyne and many other Darwinist denouncers of Meyer's otherwise highly acclaimed and respected work.I especially enjoyed the skillful and artfully engrossing way in which David Berlinski completely dismantled Matzke's absurd main argument regarding the use of cladistics as constituting the main proof for intermediates to the Cambrian phyla. (Matzke uses a conjectural formation to prove a discredited theory)The chapters by Douglas Axe and Ann Gauger were in various places too technical for a non-specialist like me to fully digest and appreciate, although the part about their work involving protein evolution was fascinating. The only reviewer that makes an attempt at honestly grappling with the points made by Stephan Meyer in "Darwin's Doubt" is Berkeley's Dr. Charles Marshall, in response to whom Meyer devotes one full section consisting of several chapters of rebuttal. Throughout the book, Dr. Marshall is given credit for at least actually addressing Meyer's main points (almost all other reviewers did not do this), for not mis-quoting or misrepresenting him (almost all other reviewers did do this), and for giving those points serious attention.Casey Luskin's analysis of the psychotically hysterical to the point of ridiculous Dr. Donald Prothero was entertaining. After Prothero's farcically spasmodic review posted on Amazon, whom Luskin methodically, calmly and very convincingly deconstructs piece by piece, I would be surprised if any untouched person who actually had read Stephan Meyer's book would not experience some degree of trepidation at the prospect of engaging with the good doctor, at least outside of an LSD trip or schizo-therapy session.About the statement made at the beginning of section VII--I hope those guys at AAAS are not overseeing the nation's nuclear power facilities.William Dembski's chapter on the conservation of information, showing the impossibility of the Darwinian mechanism to account for the generation of new information, was worth the price of the book alone and prompted me to spend hours reading more from him. This is important, because:"As Meyer explains in Darwin’s Doubt, building new forms of animal life requires massive amounts of new biological information in the form of myriads of new genes, non-coding DNA regulatory elements, gene regulatory networks, and epigenetic information. He shows, for several separate reasons, that the neo-Darwinian mechanism lacks the creative capacity necessary to generate these various forms of information. For example, Meyer shows that functional genes and proteins are exceedingly rare within sequence space. And, for this reason, he argues that a random mutational search will be overwhelmingly more likely to fail, than to succeed, in generating EVEN A SINGLE NEW GENE OR PROTEIN DURING THE ENTIRE HISTORY OF LIFE ON EARTH. Similarly, he shows that mutations in DNA alone cannot produce the epigenetic (“beyond the gene”) information necessary to build new animal body plans....Modern molecular biology has revealed that building animal body plans requires vast infusions of new functional genetic information (stored in a digital form). Modern developmental biology has shown the need for networks of genes and gene products that function as integrated control systems or circuits. Developmental biology has also revealed the importance of other sources of “epigenetic” information for building animal form and, consequently, the existence of a hierarchically organized information processing system at work in animal development. Yet, we know of one, and only one, type of cause capable of producing these necessary conditions of building animal form. In our experience, digital information, integrated control systems (and circuitry) and hierarchically organized information processing systems invariably arise from intelligent causes--from conscious and rational activity. So why not consider the possibility that such a cause played a role in the origin of animal life?"I'd like to read Dembski's "Being as Communion" too, but will have to wait until I have time to obtain Ph.D.'s in theoretical mathematics and quantum physics. By the way, initially I thought "the search for the search" was a reference to what the Darwinists are up to :0)Section eight actually presents an issue that really confuses me, and apparently Stephan Meyer as well--the resistance of theistic evolutionary scientists at Francis Collin's BioLogos site to the idea of Intelligent Design. I mean, they claim to be Christians and believe that the Christian God is responsible for the existence of the universe, our earth and all life. As Stephan Meyer puts it:"Why not consider the possibility that systems at work in animal development bear witness to the designing agent that BioLogos scientists believe to be a reality? Despite his recognition of the depth of the conceptual problems confronting contemporary evolutionary theory, [BioLogos scientist] Darrel does not seem open to this possibility. My question is simply: Why not?"As an aside (but I think it fits):The ENCODE project has definitely established that 80 percent of the human genome is biochemically functional--with 100 percent functionality being a near certitude--completely overturning the false concept of junk DNA.(some researchers have likened this 'junk' to an astonishingly sophisticated systems management architecture; similar to the operating system of a computer)Fearing the demise of a long cherished argument, evolutionists immediately retaliated in their customary style--through uncivil attack against the messengers. Even the world's top two scientific journals--SCIENCE and NATURE--commented on the "anger", "rudeness", "intemperate griping", and "vitriolic hyperbole and mockery" commonly displayed by ENCODE's critics (science denying Darwinists).Nothing new here.http://www.salvomag.com/new/articles/salvo32/the-encode-embroilment-part-II.php#sthash.Peb8zRLx.dpuf

In some ways it seemed like too much fire power to answer the mostly weak criticisms of the book. Like using a trip hammer to crack a walnut. Most of the criticisms so impoverished that there might be some suspicion that they were selected more as fodder for rebuttal, then the best criticisms available. The essays in this book were not only well reasoned, but in some instances quite funny. I particularly recommend David Berlinski's contribution.

Disculpame mis errors in escribir, el libro no necesita disculpos.

David's "tell it like it is with a touch of humor" style gives the reader a true feeling of the day to day life of a soldier. For us civilians, it's an opportunity to gain some understanding of what war does to those involved and the things they do to get the job done while overcoming obstacles.

City lights and cherry trees: The woodblock prints of Tokyo that captured Europe's imagination   Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) was one of the last great artists in the ukiyo-e tradition. Literally meaning “pictures of the floating world,” ukiyo-e was a particular genre of art that flourished between the 17th and 19th centuries and came to characterize the Western world’s visual idea of Japan. In many ways images of hedonism, ukiyo-e scenes often represented the bright lights and attractions of Edo (modern-day Tokyo): beautiful women, actors and wrestlers, city life, and spectacular landscapes.Though he captured a variety of subjects, Hiroshige was most famous for landscapes, with a final masterpiece series known as “One Hundred Famous Views of Edo” (1856–1858), which depicted various scenes of the city through the seasons, from bustling shopping streets to splendid cherry orchards. This reprint is made from one of the finest complete original sets of woodblock prints belonging to the Ota Memorial Museum of Art in Tokyo. It pairs each of the 120 illustrations with a description, allowing readers to immerse themselves in these beautiful, vibrant vistas that became paradigms of Japonisme and inspired Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and Art Nouveau artists alike, from Vincent van Gogh to James McNeill Whistler.   About the Series: Bibliotheca Universalis — Compact cultural companions celebrating the eclectic TASCHEN universe at an unbeatable, democratic price!Since we started our work as cultural archaeologists in 1980, the name TASCHEN has become synonymous with accessible, open-minded publishing. Bibliotheca Universalis brings together nearly 100 of our all-time favorite titles in a neat new format so you can curate your own affordable library of art, anthropology, and aphrodisia.Bookworm’s delight — never bore, always excite!   Text in English, French, and German

An aging criminal reminiscent of Patricia Highsmith's The Talented Mr. Ripley receives threatening phone calls from a man who claims to be Cal Thornton, the young heir he thought he'd killed decades before on the island of Stromboli. Meanwhile, a dying thriller writer based on the famous lesbian author, fights off an old girlfriend's smothering advances while stalking a young female performance artist, who was also once her lover, in a haze of violent obsession. TYLER'S LAST is an homage to Highsmith, the last years of her life, her work's obsessions and the twisting mythology that has tied them together. It is also the name of the novel she's racing to finish, a final goodbye to her down-and-out protagonist, and the Doppelgangers that stalk him. Both stories come together in Normandy and in Senegal in search of redemption for characters who have good reason to expect nothing close.

Tyler's Last, by David Winner

Review

"An elderly crime novelist’s last work and a shady crook’s errand overlap in Winner’s fictional nod to Patricia Highsmith... Winner’s writing is intense, provocative, slightly perverse, and satisfyingly comic. The competing plots and the novel-within-a-novel format are propelled by an earthy and sexual literary voice whose wily sophistication is both coarse and unique... A brash literary thriller that plunges deep into the mind of a criminal and his creator." - Kirkus Reviews

"It's hard to describe David Winner’s fascinating and original book. On one level it's satirical, but as with any kind of comedy, its performance depends on our understanding the riff being done on very serious matters. Also, as the author knows, the serious and the satirical are by now often synonymous in people’s minds, our society has become so absurd. I kept thinking of Hitchcock, and the way he made his audience voyeurs. David Winner’s method is similar, though there’s more than a whiff of Tarantino in the Hitchcock homage, as well. It's riveting and funny, a sort of dazzling movie script that is a novel that involves another book within it. . . It comes at you cinematically, but with the advantage of a novel that alludes to literary models, as well. Its language is hipster shorthand for readers to absorb as they become spectators to the extravaganza, as the book, itself, expands into its political implications. Tyler is certainly the last person I would ever want to sit next to on an airplane." - Ann Beattie

"David Winner's new novel is a double pleasure -- for one, there is an engrossing thriller with an alternately hapless and capable scoundrel, flight and fight, twists and turns. . . The second pleasure is that that thriller is in the process of being written by an aging woman author who is transforming her own pursuits and betrayals in her fiction. This meta-move is clever, but it turns out to be much more than clever. She is, for all her high-handed treatment of her entourage, a memorably sympathetic and moving character. The two fictions reinforce each other resonantly. Bravo!" - John Casey

"Fans of Patricia Highsmith will be enthralled by David Winner’s perverse homage to the author and her milieu. This novel casts a narcotic spell, leaving one savaged as well as tremendously impressed." - Elizabeth McKenzie

"Tyler’s Last is both parody and homage, aimed not only at the Ripley novels of Patricia Highsmith but at their lost mid-century glamour. A comic and dazzling movie-in-words, Winner’s book shuttles us around the globe--Italy, France, The Netherlands, Senegal--in a gratifying game of illusion and counter-illusion, color and intrigue, all rendered with Nabokovian venom and glee." - Zachary Lazar

"With the magical plot of Tyler’s Last, Winner proves himself a son of Nabokov. An aging, maniacal author’s struggles to finish her final “Tyler” book are divinely echoed and, ultimately, wildly entwined with the actions of her even madder creation. Just finished this tour de force, and I’m ready to read it again!" - Elizabeth Evans

"a complex and intriguing story about Eve, an elderly author whose brief romance with a fan has turned into an obsession of lust and cravings. Their connection created such an impression that it left such a wound upon Eve’s heart and mind she has never recovered from." - Portland Book Review

"'Tyler's Last' is like a great tribute band. At times, it captures what made the first band special, even surpassing it. At others, it illustrates flaws in the original music and lyrics. Over all, the riff is fitting." - Madeleine Johnson at The American

About the Author David Winner’s first novel, The Cannibal of Guadalajara, won the 2009 Gival Press Novel Award and was nominated for the National Book Award. A film based on a story of Winner's played at Cannes in 2007. His writing has won a Ledge Magazine fiction contest and been nominated for two Pushcarts and an AWP Intro Contest. His work has appeared in The Village Voice, Fiction, The Iowa Review (upcoming), Chicago Quarterly Review (upcoming), Confrontation, Joyland, Dream Catcher, and several other publications in the U.S. and the U.K. as well as being included in Novel Strategies, a Pearson/Prentice Hall anthology for college students. A brilliant, beautifully crafted book By Ruth Wyatt This book is a real gem that works on so many different levels. it is completely engrossing and entertaining. it is very funny (in an often brutal way). It is cleverly reverential to Patricia Highsmith while being totally unique. It is beautifully written and most importantly, a great read! I cannot recommend this book enough!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Read it in one afternoon By Constantin Reader Crisp, trenchant novel with pitch-perfect tone and pace. The book-within-the-book motif brilliantly ties together the deranged author/antagonist and her equally misanthropic creation in a dervish dance of parthenogenesis and depravity. Roguish dialogue and some hilarity. Verily, you will LOL.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. ambitious and brilliant pastiche of Patricia Highsmith’s crime writing By Anthony Fawcett Tyler’s Last is a bold, ambitious and brilliant pastiche of Patricia Highsmith’s crime writing. I was also reminded of Hitchcock; the writing has a cinematic quality that rarely flags and a capacity for implicating the voyeur in us all of which he was a master. But it also does so much more, demonstrating that a novel can penetrate and distort the imagination in ways that a movie cannot. The characters disintegrate into each other, both literally as an aging writer stricken with Parkinson’s gropes through her inner landscape in fear of death and a deadline and also within the story itself, which we realize as it unfolds is a story within a story.Seedy, glamorous and full of élan the book whirls us from Stromboli to Senegal and many points in-between. It is a tribute to the author that he even manages to work in the fall of the twin towers on 9/11 but in the most subtle of ways, creating an echo between the book’s stylized mid-century atmosphere and the contemporary circumstances in which his protagonists find themselves. It also highlights one of the book’s great qualities – it’s an exuberant ride but beneath its surface it suggests profound questions about the nature of evil and our struggles to fulfill our needs.I’ll leave the last word to Highsmith herself since I suspect that we would not have this skilfully executed work without her presence. In Strangers on a Train, she created a claustrophobic, unsettling story in which two men – Bruno and Guy - exchange murders, each one killing an estranged intimate of the other. Unlike the Hitchcock movie, the psychopathic Bruno mesmerizes Guy to such a degree that he ultimately commits the murder and, in its wake, asks himself whether Bruno was not in some way his “cast-off self, what he thought he hated but perhaps in reality loved”. I found myself pondering that conundrum again after I had finished this excellent book.

All under the guise of being an "uplifting" story about a transgendered college student - who is steadily victimized in an escalating pattern through the entire novel. And there's the problem. The heart of the story is about a TG who is "feminized" (to the extent of wearing diapers and pumping breast milk) without consent by an entire university - but (being a "sissy" TG) kind of likes it. While the novel admits what was done to the protagonist was criminal the entire focus on the book is on the abuse and the bizzare acceptance of it.In my opinion this is insulting and offensive to all transgendered, and plays to offensive sexualized stereotypes of transsexuals as weak, easily manipulated dupes who are readily abused and enjoy it. How about a sequel where we can read about pedophile homosexuals dabbling in beastiality, so long as we are reinforcing stereotypes?

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. What. The. Heck. By Kimberly G. Armstrong My review title pretty much describes the general feeling this book left me with. Just the title and cover should have been enough to dissuade me from reading it. First of all, I am completely for transgender rights. That is not why I hated this book.I'm just going to make a list of reasons why I hated it to avoid a rambling paragraph.1. FETISHIZING. Even during the infantile immersion therapy, Chris is talking about how much he likes Mo. Some of these scenes left me sick to my stomach. Infantile immersion therapy is something to be considered by licensced doctors, and carried out my professionals, not friends and even possible love interests.2. Incrediby unrealistic. NO college, not even one with a messed up faculty could possibly get away with forcing a student to dress in young girls clothes, throw temper tantrums, and rape multiple girls. I don't care how open and accepting Mo's parents are. It's a lot to take in in a short period of time and any parent would need time to adjust.3. Mo, how naive can you be? Ok, she looks young. Bout she is eighteen years old. She had to have known something was up with Professor Prooze earlier. Especially with that name. She also could have recorded him much earlier.4. Terrible writing. Simply terrible. Grammar and spelling errors galore.5. The author does not seem to understand that there is a difference between transgender and transsexual. DO YOUR RESEARCH ON THE SUBJECT BEFOFE WRITING A FRIGGIN NOVEL ON IT.If you enjoy pedophilia, fetishizing, terrible writing, and weak characters, then this book is for you. If not, I suggest Brave New Word by Aldous Huxley to restore your intellectual abilities. Just reading the blurb has turned 25% of your brain to mush. Save yourself from awful literature before it's too late.

My main complaint would be the follow thru from one scene to another. The part of Moore or Maureen playing an 8 yr old girl was hard to believe as well as the baby training which totally turned me off .Which is main reason I gave the book a 4 instead of a 5.Transgender or not I couldn't imagine a person doing some of the things that happened. Like letting a guy change your diaper or bottle feed me.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. A powerful debut novel. I'll be following this author's career with interest. By Russell S. Newquist I recently finished Nethereal, the debut novel from Brian Niemeier.I'm going to come right out and admit it: I bought this book because of its cover. First, that cover is all kinds of awesome. Second, it's a cover that screams out, "I am a science fiction novel and I'm not afraid to announce that to the world."I'm not a fan of the recent trend in genre fiction towards bland, generic covers that try to hide the fact that the books are genre. I bought Game of Thrones back nearly twenty years ago when it was still printed with the original paperback cover of Jon Snow and his direwolf Ghost. I'm not afraid to admit that I bought that book for the cover, too.In both cases, it was a good choice. Nethereal is a strong debut novel. The characters are interesting. The setting is interesting. The plot bogs down just a bit in the middle, but otherwise moves at a brisk pace. Most importantly, you'll want to know what happens next to these characters. The most frustrating thing for me in reading this book was that I was so busy that I had to read it in short segments. I kept getting angry that I had to put it down to do other things. One other aspect of the book that I found very interesting was the way his world paralleled the nine circles of hell in Dante's Inferno. I have a strong suspicion that the rest of the series will continue the parallels with The Divine Comedy, and I'm quite curious to watch it unfold.Five stars for this debut effort. I'll be watching Brian's career with interest.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Abandon preconceptions, all ye who enter here! By Jeff Duntemann There are starships, but these are not your father's starships. There are space pirates, but not the space pirates you were looking for. There is Hell, but it's not...quite...Dante's Hell. Magical firearms, trapped souls, epic space battles, startling images, touches of Persian dualism, wise-ass demigods, necromancers, a zombie chicken, and a marvelous swipe at the bloodthirsty 14th Century Bishop Henry Despenser of Norwich. And this is the author's first novel. I'm hardly an expert, but I was extremely impressed. What's key here is the richness of the author's creation. This isn't just an imagined future. Earth is nowhere to be seen, past or present. Brian has created an entire cosmos with its own rules, exotic physics, and even more exotic metaphysics. Half-sentient FTL starships are guided by telepathic pilots who are more partner than master--and can be eaten by the mysterious Wheel if they break the complex rules of steersmanship. The gulf between life and death that we experience here is paper-thin in this ancient cosmos long abandoned by its own gods. Half of your crew might actually be dead men--and you have to look close to tell which is which. The plot is difficult to discuss without giving too much away. There are constant twists and turns, which sometimes expand to a Byzantine complexity that may be the book's primary (though not critical) flaw. One of the few remaining members of an immortal race searches this strange cosmos for clues about his father's fate and the titanic starship his father designed, on a mysterious mission that eventually takes Jaren Peregrine and his peculiar crew to the center of Hell itself. Strap in and enjoy the ride. I've never seen anything quite like it in my 50-odd years of reading SFF.

I enjoyed this book By Joseph Moore In a nutshell: I enjoyed this book, the writing is good, the characters memorable, the images and ideas suitably fantastic for space opera. It's only $4.99 for the Kindle, what are you waiting for?Brian Niemeier's first book, Nethereal, is the story of the adventures of 4 friends, two humans and two not-so-humans, who live as pirates in a world ruled by the evil Steersman's Guild. Jaren, the half human, half Gen captain, seeks revenge on the Guild that exterminated his race, but has been forced to live as a pirate on the fringes of the Middle Stratum; Nakvin is a human-looking renegade Lady Steersman of unknown origin who pilots Jaren's ships. She took in Jaren as a boy over 100 years ago. She is now his best, perhaps only, friend; Teg, quick-witted muscle-for-hire who, despite his professional aloofness from the causes he is hired to protect, has become devoted to Jaren's quixotic adventures, and Deim, a young Steersman being trained by Nakvin, who falls in love with a very peculiar girl. Together, they adventure around the Middle Stratum and to Hell and back.Nethereal is an exercise not so much in world-building as in universe-building. Niemeier creates a universe only superficially related to ours, and then explores the differences. This universe is laid out with great care throughout the book, so I won't spoil it by describing it here - part of the fun here is not knowing what is going on until later events reveal it. The Nethereal universe is intricate and imaginative, and provides an engaging backdrop against which the drama and personalities unfold. After much travail and derring-do, the story's climactic battle is mind-blowing - and a good set up for the next book in the series. Nethereal is well worth the read.A couple caveats: I suspect I'm not exactly the target audience for this book. I'll confess I'm not much for super-cool mind powers, which abound here. The advanced enough science/indistinguishable from magic deal seems like so much hand-waving when what you really want are Merlin-equivalents in your sci fi. This is just a personal quirk, traceable, perhaps, to my never having played RPGs - an obvious shortcoming on my part. I know many people enjoy this kind of stuff, but for me it takes some getting past. But given that, the magic/technology is well done. One other curiosity, also just a personal thing: much of the action takes place in a Hell unique to the Nethereal Universe, but roughly structured after the Nine Circles in Dante's Inferno. Now, I'm as big a Dante-freak as you're likely to find outside a university Dante department, so, naturally, I'm mapping Dante's Hell against the Nethereal Hell - and, I ended up reading the book three times, and couldn't make sense of it. Sure, there are points of contact and shared imagery, but I ended up thinking it was just for drama and color - I could not find any of Dante's sophisticated sense of morality, which is the true structure of his Hell, in Nethereal's weird and evocative afterlife. But again, rare is the reader who will find this an issue. So, all in all, a fun read. Go buy and read this book!

45 Minutes Startup Series

There is no question about YouTube being one of the hottest places to earn money on the web right now. Many have been quite successful in milking out huge sums of cash from this search engine and video hosting site. And to be honest, half of them even have no idea how to market anything and have come from different industries and worlds when they started. Some of those successful people were lazy bums, video game players, hopeless actors, and cheerful guys who have obnoxiously high pitched voices. Their success was mostly backed by luck. That might sound detrimental to them, but it is quite true. For most of them, luck dried out fast. A few of them failed and disappeared from the face of YouTube after their instant stardom. The ones remaining are the people who knew how to make use of money, work hard, and take advantage of their newfound source of income. A few of those people are Ray William Johnson, Freddie Wong, Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg (PewdiePie), and Shane Dawson. However, as early as now, do not just think of becoming one of them; there are differences that attribute each person. First of all, your motivations and goals are different from them. You are explicitly looking for money in YouTube while they are just having fun. Second, they were lucky. It does not mean that you will not be lucky, too; but luck is something that you cannot rely on. Third, their path will be completely different from yours. Of course, it does not mean that you will not become successful at YouTube marketing. Some other guys out there might not be earning as much as those YouTube celebrities, but they are earning sufficient extra income. And besides, you do not need to focus on getting all of your money using YouTube. You can just use it as an additional marketing tool that will serve your business. So why try YouTube marketing? Aside from Google, YouTube is the next widely used search engine in the world. Almost two thirds of internet users are in YouTube. Most of them spend a day or two every month browsing the website — that is one huge market anybody would love to have control over. Whether you like it or not, you will use YouTube at some point of your online marketing venture. After all, YouTube is the place to go if you want to post and save videos that you will show to the public market. This book will help you learn the necessary steps in order to make money in YouTube and make YouTube help you earn more money together with your business online or offline. Keep in mind that you need to learn and master two major steps if you want to become a successful YouTube marketer. • Step 1: Attract as many people as you can. • Step 2: Make them give you money. The following will revolve around those two. Some of the tips and topics here might seem generic, but the fact remains that many fail to do or even remember them – not recognizing how vital they are to achieve success. And it is essential that those things should be stressed out. This book will be split into five parts: • Initial Planning Stage • YouTube Marketing Myths • Standard Procedures in Uploading and Creating YouTube Videos • Problems that You Need to Avoid when Using YouTube YouTube Advertising and Monetization. Read Ebook The Immortal Dickens, by George Gissing

George Robert Gissing was an English novelist who published 23 novels between 1880 and 1903. Gissing also worked as a teacher and tutor throughout his life. He published his first novel, Workers in the Dawn, in 1880. His best known novels, which are published in modern editions, include The Nether World (1889), New Grub Street (1891), and The Odd Women (1893). Gissing’s early novels were not well received, but he achieved greater recognition in the 1890s, both in England and overseas. The increase in popularity was linked not just to his novels, but to the short stories he wrote in this period and his friendships with influential and respected literary figures such as the journalist Henry Norman, author J. M. Barrie and writer and critic Edmund Gosse. By the end of the 19th century, critics placed him alongside Thomas Hardy and George Meredith as one of the three leading novelists in England. Sir William Robertson Nicoll described Gissing as ”one of the most original, daring and conscientious workers in fiction.” Chesterton called him the ”soundest of the Dickens critics, a man of genius.” George Orwell was an admirer and in a 1943 Tribune article called Gissing ”perhaps the best novelist England has produced”. He believed his ”real masterpieces” were the ”three novels, The Odd Women, Demos, and New Grub Street, and his book on Dickens. The central theme can be stated in three words — ‘not enough money’.”

Born To Serve: The Major A.G. Happer Story, by Jim Douglas

About the Author Jim Douglas is an amateur Civil War historian with the battle of Gettysburg and the Army of Northern Virginia of particular interest, and a serious collector of Civil War antiques. Over the years he has developed a network of friendships with other Civil War historians, authors, living historians, experts, collectors and dealers across the country. Civil War collectors and dealers often often approach him for advice on the authenticity of items prior to purchase. He has also been a speaker at local schools concerning the Civil War. Mr. Douglas lives in western Pennsylvania with his wife and family, a dog named Egon, and a pony named Sassy. It would be fair to say that the Douglas household truly is... a dog and pony show.

By Gmaw This book is not the usual Civil War soldier book filled with dry facts and figures. This book is a fantastic story about a soldier who had a remarkable military service and went on to do great things afterward. This book is great for the hardcore Civil War buff and the newbie as well, or anyone interested in Washington County, PA. There are small, fun stories sprinkled throughout the book, told by a member of the 11th Pennsylvania, that really add to the enjoyment. There are areas that tell lots of information that you don't find in most Civil War books, that help the novice understand exactly what's going on and why. The hardcore buff will enjoy the details presented.Having the battles mostly as told by the men who were there was an interesting way of telling that part of the story. The author backs up his facts with pages of endnotes. I don't want to give too much away, but this story would make a great TV miniseries. It's unbelievable that the Major is unknown today. There should be a statue of him somewhere.
