Lon Otto's new collection of short fiction, A Man in Trouble, is a very urban book, centered on an inner city neighborhood in St. Paul, Minnesota. Its stories leave that city at times—for outstate cabins and trout streams, for the South Dakota Badlands, for a tenement rooftop in Havana, Cuba—but A Man in Trouble is rooted in city soil, rocky with the history of diverse people living close together. The stories wrestle with the complexities of family, race, community, social and personal history, and the natural world that is a part of the city, yet also stands outside of it, waiting for us with a terrible patience.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A MAN IN TROUBLE by Lon Otto By Joseph R. Goldman Lon Otto can add another accolade to his credit as an engaging storyteller with A MAN IN TROUBLE. This collection of short stories is about real people and circumstances any reader can relate well from their own lives and experiences. Each story takes place in Otto's world of Mid-West Minnesota and people with their own unique time and space. His locales range from the windswept "potato country" of western Minnesota, to the tree-lined bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River Walk; or the vacant lots and nearby decrepit houses in shabby parts of St Paul, to the humdrum city walls of Minneapolis; or from a cabin "up North" in late fall, to tropical and vibrant Havana. These colorful backdrops give their equally attention-getting characters like Rita Vogel or Elder Crown movement and meaning as their stories unfold. Otto deftly makes ordinary situations into extraordinary ones, as the characters and plots combine to give each story his profound insight, and leave behind an unexpected surprise. The language in A MAN IN TROUBLE is replete also with rich textures and sensations for readers; which moves each story swiftly along from beginning to end in delightful, rhythmic prose. With this book, Lon Otto shows his mastery of crisp and invigorating storytelling that clearly puts him in the ranks of one our best authors of this genre in years.
