"Isabelle's Attic" is the story of a young Jewish girl whose life was saved from certain death at the hands of the German Nazis during World War II. From 1942 to 1945, three-year-old Isa Hauser was hidden by a Polish Catholic family in their attic in Czortkow, Poland, her birthplace. She was one of only three Jewish children from Czortkow known to have survived the Nazi atrocities. Until the early 1990s, the author, Isabelle Teresa Huber, did not speak about her story of survival, and did not associate herself as a Holocaust survivor. Finally able to confront her truths, the flood gates opened. Encouraged by her family, she and her close friend, Nan Miller, collaborated to write the complete account of this part of her life. Through this collaboration she has now given her children and grandchildren meaning to the idea of how dear life really is.

Isabelle's Story of Adaptation, Compassion, Hope, and Survival By Joared Isabelle's story begins with a descriptive journey into the past that soon evolves into young Isabelle, aka Inka, whose words vividly express a child's point of view as she is plunged into an adult world gone mad with betrayals, violated trust and violence. Three year old Inka has suddenly been relinquished by her desperate parents, who have lost the stability, affluence, and ability to provide for even their own safety and security. A young girl, Meva, with her family voluntarily risk their lives to provide little Inka sanctuary from escalating World War II atrocities."Isabelle's Attic" benefits from vivid recollections the author's now-deceased mother, Freida, recorded over time in interviews. Freida's remembrances have augmented and clarified Isabelle's early memories, coupled with the author's research and visits in Europe. Inka's ability to adapt seems quite remarkable beginning when so young as she ultimately copes with her family being torn apart, loss of other relatives and friends, instances of reuniting, then rejection, abandonment, harrowing escapes to other nations. The book's words and the language used to share a young adolescent Inka's thoughts, feelings and perceptions in a ruthless chaotic adult world are especially poignant.Extraordinary determination, perseverance, dedication insufficiently describe the efforts and risks taken by Inka's Mother to save both of them from adverse weather conditions, hunger, disease, exploitation and to preserve their lives. Hope and optimism amazingly surface throughout the story-telling which contributes to making this book an emotional and special read.

It left me wanting to know more about Isa and her family.I will admit I know the author so maybe I am a bit biased, I felt it was written well and the author used an honest and truthful voice to do it.
