Unfortunately, not up to the par of the rest of the series By Brian Baker I've been a fan of Coughlin's and Davis's "Sniper" series right from their debut. It's good, solid entertainment along the lines of early Bob Lee Swagger, with Mitch Rapp overtones; running and gunning with political overtones.Sadly, I have to report that I found this book to fall far short of the mark, not really living up to the rest of the series.There wasn't any one thing that I can point to as being the big disappointment. Instead, it seems to be the cumulative result of a bunch of smaller problems.First of all, the whole book seemed rushed; somehow unpolished. Too much time spent on relatively unimportant things, not enough time spent on the big things. An example: at one point, central character Kyle Swanson and his (for this book) sidekick -- a female Coast Guard sniper -- are spending some time aboard the yacht of his mentor and adoptive "family". Well, if you've read the previous books, you know what the relationships are all about, but if this is your first exposure, this entire segment feels like something just dropped in from out of nowhere, it isn't set up well at all, and it doesn't really do anything to advance the story or the reader's understanding of the characters.The plot revolves around the point that a secret facility is being built in Pakistan by terrorists as a future headquarters for their leader, "Commander Khan". Throughout the book we keep hearing that Khan this and Khan that... yet we never actually SEE Khan. He never shows up himself. It's really hard to get any sense of urgency about a Bad Guy character who never actually appears anywhere.There's a US government mucky-muck who's actually a traitor, and coordinating with the terrorists, but his actions -- especially when he's discovered by our guys -- seem completely inexplicable and unbelievable. The authors have him doing things that lead to some action and a conclusion to the book, but that are totally unbelievable as being something a real person would do if he wants to escape alive.There's a side plot about the sabotage of a NASA flight to Mars that seems wholly irrelevant and gratuitous, as well as being given incredibly short shrift for being included at all. If you're going to include it in the book, at least DO something with it.The treatment of the central character himself -- Kyle Swanson the legendary sniper -- was especially surprising. He was given very few lines, and he did very little that would have established him as a "person" for anyone who wasn't already familiar with the series. He comes across as a blank; a cipher; and that's very different from the rest of the series in which he's portrayed three-dimensionally. If this were the only book I'd read of the series, I'd really have almost no feel for him as a fully-developed character.I could go on, but why bother? I think you get the point.Very disappointing.

An Enjoyable Thriller Featuring Snipers, Terrorists, and Traitors By TMStyles "Running The Maze" by Jack Coughlin was my first experience with the "Kyle Swanson Sniper Novels" and I found it to be enjoyable enough that I plan to seek out the previous efforts. An international team of medical volunteers is slaughtered in Pakistan in an effort to cover up a deadly terrorist threat designed to seriously threaten the US and its international allies. One of the ill-fated team, Joey Ledford, snaps a photo of a collapsed bridge and sends it to his sister, Beth Ledford, a coast guard sniper, which initiates her search for answers. But Beth faces roadblock after roadblock as she travels from one government agency to another seeking someone who will help her prove her brother died as part of a deadly conspiracy. Someone behind the scenes is pulling strings to thwart her efforts and has even begun surveilling her.Only when she stumbles upon the Tridant Task Force, a top secret government special ops force answerable only to The President, does she elicit enough interest in her suspicions to set things in motion. She quickly is paired with top US sniper, Kyle Swanson, and they are secretly sent into Pakistan to follow the trail her brother's team traversed in hopes of discovering what he stumbled upon that cost him and his team their lives. Kyle and Beth quickly unearth a super secret facility that is part of a deadly al-Qaeda and Taliban plot to change the balance of power in the Middle East as well as in the world.The snipers spring into action as their presence is discovered and the killing begins in earnest. Meanwhile, the highly placed US diplomat who has secretly been working with the enemy in Pakistan is determined to undermine and stop the meddling of the Tridant Team before it is too late. He is deeply involved in the plot already discovered by the snipers as well as another high profile attack that may startle the world. He will resort to any tactic including kidnapping and murder to punish the Tridant snipers and to fulfill his terrorist dreams. In a race against the clock, what can the two snipers do to stop the plot in Pakistan as well as to find the collaborator and stop his nefarious plans back home.Tension and suspense gets ratcheted up page by page as Kyle and Beth race to disrupt plots at home and abroad and to preserve the safety of all Americans. Overall, "Running The Maze" was a pleasant weekend read with a fast moving plot and believable characters. There was a constant sense of threat and danger thoughout this well paced thriller. Recommended for fans of sniper thrillers with enough suspense, action, and character development to maintain this reader's interest.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. It Was Okay By Ken C. Running the Maze ran just a little too far for me. Too far out, that is. The underground facility described in the novel seems so overblown and unlikely. It mainly served as the reason for various battles to be fought until the good guy finally triumphs. As for being a sniper novel, I could have used more sniping!
