Harris Jim Rosen’s beautifully decorated envelopes were long known only to those lucky enough to receive them, all friends, andmany also artists or curators. This modest catalog was published to document their first public exposure in this country.Rosen has beautiful handwriting, draws cats, lobsters, horses and birds with ease, sometimes in one line, and thenuses precious old stamps, some depicting famous art works by Raphael, Picasso, and Hokusai, and other ephemera, all linkedto the recipients and their place in the world – India, Italy, Japan – creating a delicious mixtures of past and present, wit and visual poetry. They are exceptionally elegant examples of what some call Mail Art, though Rosen dislikes the term. Thefine catalog essay by Paul Bright, the curator and an old friend of the artist, provides some background for theseintricate private musings on the containers for more private correspondence. They should make readers anxious to knowmore about the subtle complexity of Rosen’s paintings too. It is well worth $10.00.
