By arascal Cromwell was a very controversial (and ultimately, detested) figure in England's tumultuous 17th century. I have read quiet a lot about England's history, but knew little of Cromwell's life prior to his assumption of "kingly" power. The book does a good job of fleshing out the times and the character and exploits of a man who if he had not became a religious zealot might have forever changed England's form of government. Well written, interesting and informative. His brutality and forced removal of Scots and Irish to the Colonies as slaves, brought my ancestors to America. Recent investigation into the cause of Cromwell's death point to malaria. Malaria was common in England during the 17th Century and, as documented in the "Biography of Oliver Cromwell," he suffered bouts of extreme fatigue and fever that often incapacitated him - typical symptoms of malaria.
