Dozer Combat Tracking in the Bush WarsTimothy Stapleton’s book “Warfare and Tracking in Africa, 1952-1990” is a brilliant historical coverage of visual combat/tactical tracking in Africa during the violent bush war era. In 2014, I first read Stapleton’s article “Bush Tracking and Warfare in Late Twentieth-Century East and Southern Africa” which was also an excellent article on the subject. In that article he footnoted the he was writing a book about the role of tracking in warfare in Africa. After reading that article I eagerly awaited the release of this book, as that article turned out to an abbreviated (20 odd page) teaser to this book. This book does an excellent job at weaving all the historical facts and figures around the players. It details the complete evolution of tracking as an effective counter-insurgency tool. The coverage on Kenya’s military and game tracking programs was very revealing, as I personally have read little about the backside history of the employment combat tracking in that conflict. As well, the sections on Rhodesia were also very enlightening with tons of information I was unaware of, as it relates to the development of tracking in the Rhodesian Security Forces from pre-Tracker Combat Unit to the Selous Scouts. I found the sections on South Africa and their bush war tracking exploits in South West Africa (Namibia) excellent with solid coverage on Koevoet, 101/201 Battalion and 32 Buffalo Battalion. Additionally, the book covers many details of tracking in Botswana, Mozambique and other related locations to support the thesis of this work. Overall, the historical coverage is top notch and reads and flows brilliantly.Of interest to military trackers is that this book does a very accurate job in describing various tactical tracking methods from aerial and vehicle mounted tracking to the vertical envelope tactics of the Rhodesian Fireforce. A vast amount of the tracking drills covered are anti- / counter-tracking tactics, techniques and procedures and how the insurgent and security forces adapted to a changing battle space to counter the tracking threat. A lot of information is also covered on pseudo-operations as most of the counter-insurgency concepts of tracking developed in parallel or in conjunction with pseudo-operations concept. Also, a lot of the pre-development of combat tracking is found in the history of African counter-poaching initiatives and tactics employed by game rangers, who were instrumental to developing the early combat tracking programs. Now, for some bad news about this book, this book is outrageously expensive, in the low three-figure range for U.S. dollars. There are very few books out there worth this staggering amount of money. The quality of the book is generic with average paper, no glossy photo pages, no color and no dust jacket. It is a minimal quality hard cover. I think the publisher should lower the cost and/or release a soft cover edition. It is unfortunate because of high cost this excellent book, it will never get in the hands of the many people that would appreciate this work. If you are on the fence about making this purchase due to the cost, I recommend you find his article for free online and read it. If you like the content and his writing style and want to delve deeper into the subject then you can decide on making the purchase. Finally, although highly expensive, as a visual tracker with over twenty-five years experience, I enthusiastically recommend this book to anyone with an interest in visual tracking (man or beast), military tracking, special operations, hunting and wildlife conservation enthusiast. I give this book three-stars for cost and five solid stars for content.
